In what order would you protect eight Piston players in an expansion draft?

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Wed Apr 6, 2016 5:29 pm

Assuming we were to have an expansion draft this offseason, in what order would you protect Piston eight players?

It's pretty sad thinking about it actually. Cause the 8th guy we could care less about losing. Either Bullock or Hilliard I guess. Man.

Exactly this. And on a related, but different note, I wonder what the plan is for Bullock, I really don't understand why he hasn't been seeing any minutes since SJ came back. He's a useful player and under contract for next season, I wonder what the plan is with him.

Is it really that sad? Our 8th is obviously pretty weak, but in this type of scenario I doubt most teams would care much about their 8th guy.

On the plus side, look how young our top 6 is.

Really surprised how low Stanley is, based on his rookie contract and potential. I'd have him third, possibly second.

1 - Drummond
2 - Harris
3 - Johnson
4 - Caldwell-Pope
5 - Jackson
6 - Morris
7 - Hilliard
8 - Baynes

I don't like Jackson--not that I want to lose him for nothing, as he has value, but I do want a better defensive point guard as a starter next season. Johnson is so high because of his potential.

I
d almost guarantee they would take Baynes. That is crazy. Do you know how many times he saved us this year?

8-Jackson

Jackson is last because he is the least likely to be taken. His contract is viewd as an over pay and aexxpantion team would not want to commit that much money to a PG as they are pletiful enough to worry about later. Also I wish that they would, I would love a "do over" on him he plays no defese and I am tired of watching that.

I think its a product of the hype people had for him. In summer league he looked like a 2nd year player ready to break out, not a rookie. Quite a few non-piston fans on the GB were throwing his name out there as a potential RoY before the season started as well.

He hasn't had a bad season by any means, and in fact his stats are not too far from what some people predicted in the predict stanley's rookie year stats thread (though his shooting numbers are definitely worse). But he also hasn't had any huge monstrous games that make you say "Sky's the limit for his potential" like Towns/Porzingis/Russell/Booker/Turner ect...have. With that said I think I would protect him over Harris/Morris/KCP, because he has work ethic/insane confidence/age going for him, and ultimately he's an unknown which could significantly surpass all 3 of them.

Drummond

Harris
Johnson
Morris
Bullock
Hilliard
Baynes

I dont think an expansion team would want to pick up Reggies contract, so id leave him out and see what happens. Id be fine with it whether they take him or not.

The first 8 would be protected, no?

I just realized that. I was thinking that would be the order, but they would be able to pick from that order. I didn't put to much thought into it. Thinking about it now it makes no sense tho, lol

This! Although my order would be different - that's irrelevant cause as long as they're in that 8 they're protected

Traditionally expansion teams don't get to use the full cap so shy away from taking larger contracts.

If we were to leave Hilly or Bull unprotected they're more likely to be chosen IMO

Given Reggie's age and the impending salary cap explosion, he would be one of the first ones taken. That contract won't look bad in one or two years at all. Especially to an expansion franchise that won't be able to recruit top level free agents. Us basically without Dre lol.

Reggie is our highest paid (for now) and best player, despite his defense. Assuming the hypothetical expansion team would need to hit a cap floor and/or is able to immediately trade the players it acquires, Reggie would definitely get taken if left unprotected. Given our inability to recruit free agents, getting stuck with a bad PG would kill us. Can't do that.

Honestly Morris and Harris are similar players, but Morris makes 1/4th of what Harris makes so Morris would be the guy I would save between the two.

Yep. You have to view this in the scope of the whole league. He'd end up being one of the most productive, younger, options available out of the "overpaid" pool left unprotected.

Do players know if they're protected or not, in this scenario? Given how he felt about not being valued in OKC, what would his attitude be if he did stick around after leaving him open to be poached?

My list:

Drummond (shocker I know)
RJ (Prolly our best player at the moment)
KCP (Defense wins championships)
Harris (scoring punch)
Mook (scoring punch, good contract)
SJ (potential, don't lose a lottery pick for nothing)
Baynes (Underrated backup C on a decent deal)
Hilliard (potential)

Have to imagine this means losing Bullock, but given the alternatives I'm okay with it. Maybe we'd get lucky and someone would take Meeks.
