I don't mean to speak ill of the dead, but how did Flip Saunders turn the Timberwolves around? They've been consistently bad for an incredibly long time, and last year they were the worst team in the league, and this year they're still one of the worst teams in the league.

I will preface all of this by saying that Milt Newton deserves credit as well, but given that Flip Saunders brought him in, I am going to broadly give Flip credit.

The Minnesota Timberwolves were offered Klay Thompson, David Lee, and Harrison Barnes for Kevin Love, Kevin Martin, and the thirteenth overall pick; Flip Saunders declined and we ended up with Andrew Wiggins. I will try to pull up a source on this, but I will ask for a leap of faith in the mean time, as I am 100% positive that Minnesota said "no", even though the narrative seems to have gone in the other direction.

Flip Saunders also extended Ricky Rubio before he entered free-agency which likely saved us a ton of money.

Flip traded Trey Burke for Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng. Of course, one could argue he missed out on Giannis Antetokoumpo, but the point still stands.

Flip Saunders took a gamble on Zach LaVine with the thirteenth overall pick.

Flip Saunders drafted Bojan Dublivic with the fifty-ninth overall pick (time will tell if this is a good move).

Flip Saunders tanked at the end of last season to secure the best odds for the first overall pick (though I would concede that this could be viewed in a less positive light, haha).

Flip Saunders brought Kevin Garnett back.

Milt Newton brought Nemanja Bjelica over on a deal worth less that twelve million dollars over three years.

The two bad things Flip did was give Nikola Pekovic that awful contract, and make the dreadful Adreian Payne trade. Flip managed to turn a team doomed to fighting to make the playoffs (at best), into what is widely considered the best young core of players in the league within two years. Yes, a lot of dominoes fell in Flips favour, but without him Minnesota would have likely botched the Kevin Love situation and would be completely screwed.

One of the bigger things I loved about Flip (though this is slightly off-topic) was how likable he was. Almost everyone liked Flip; he kept his cards close to his chest, but he friendly with most people.

Hey, like I said, I think Flip was a good GM - but you guys aren't there yet or even close to being there yet, you guys are like 2 year from being 2 years from being there yet.

You made the jump from bottom feeder to the next tier, which is not that telling of a hurdle. There is a LOT that has to be seen to even know if the Timberwolves have the potential of being a great team - this is why I think saying Flip Saunders turned the T-Wovles around is bizarre. The T-Wolves were going to be an awful team when Love made it clear he was leaving, the biggest reason why the Timberwolves acquired their two biggest assets has more to do with Love leaving (which wasn't really a Saunders decision) more than anything.

The Timberwolves were not "stuck" or locked into something that couldn't be reversed for the fact that Love was leaving regardless. The Timberwolves.

In regards to the bold, the Timberwolves are not like the current Nets where they were totally stuck or frozen. Kevin Love leaving means that the T-Wolves were going to go through a rebuilding phase, they were not going to be in treadmill territory or fighting for a playoff spot because of that. It is very fortunate that the #1 pick in Wiggins was on the trading block, that isn't something you can realistically say was within Saunders power - the Timberwolves just happened to be the team that had a leaving star FA when James came back to Cleveland.

Again, I don't want to make this an argument on whether Saunders is a good GM or not. As I said before, I think he is a good GM and I agree with most of the moves he made. I am debating that the Timberwolves are "turned around" already, that is insanely premature and there was no GM wizardry needed to acquire the two biggest reasons why people think the Timberwolves have the best young core in the NBA (and honestly, they do not, but people like to associate #1 draft pick with being the best, the Jazz/Bucks/Celtics have better young cores off the top of my head by significant margins).

I mean they're not like the Love era Timberwolves, they're worse....The Love Era Timberwolves were riddled with injuries, not lack of talent.

I don't believe I inferred that Sanders lost a lot of games in his first season, that's just an assertions you made. The Timberwolves were never a "good" team, that doesn't mean that I was under the impression that they were Bobcat bad.

I already acknowledged that trading Love for Wiggins was a good trade for the Timberwolves, could you point out in the post where I said otherwise? It's also a no brainer trade on top of that....

So again here is you biggest criteria is winning. If 40 wins for the Wolves is bad. Then a lot of Eastern Conference playoff teams over the years have been bad as well. Including the Celtics last year.

The Love Timberwolves lacked a lot of talent. Outside of Love, Rubio, Pekovic, and Martin they were terrible.

I said no, because the Timberwolves suck and they sucked last year also, and they will suck next year as well. In other words, you are jumping the gun if you think Saunders turned the Timberwolves around, it's hyperbolic to think that the Wolves are going to become a great team already - they could end up like the Orlando Magic for all we know.

and to add on to that

Flip Saunders hasn't done anything special that any other suit would have done. His two biggest assets in Towns and Wiggins came in no brainer deals that anyone with common sense would have done - do you refute that or do you think that drafting Towns #1 overall required thought or trading a leaving free agent for the #1 pick in Wiggins wasn't something every GM would have jumped on?

Again, only judging based off of wins is ridiculous. Pelicans were in the playoffs last year, but their team wasn't built to last.

Saunders found a no brainer deal, but that is ignoring all the times Flip was torched from the national media or the public for not trading him earlier. NOBODY thought he would get that value. Getting more value than anyone thought you could get deserves credit. No matter how much of a no brainer it ended up being. If the masses think all Flip was going to get is a mid lotto pick and some small assets, and then he finds a team willing to give him a number 1 pick. He deserves credit.

Don't overrate Flip Saunders, he is a solid drafter and overall I think he was a good GM, but he hasn't performed miracles in Minnesota. Minnesota was a decaying team that was going to become awful one way or another after Love announced he was leaving, on the way to becoming horrible they managed to land Town and Wiggins - everyone else are nice pieces (I loved the Shabazz and Dieng pick, and MOST people in the T-Wolve section thought Dieng was horrible), but they are not the reason why Minny has insanely high potential. In fact one of the most powerful assets they have is Ricky Rubio who hardly has anything to do with Flip Saunders also...

um Ricky Rubio was extended by Flip Saunders on what is looking like a great contract now, when at the time a bunch of people thought it was a terrible contract. Again I find the double standard funny. You discredit him for losing Love, but then don't give him the credit he deserves for finding the no brainer trade.

You're giving a LOT of credit for James forcing Wiggins out of Cleveland....

I'm sure you're happy to give credit to Danny Ainge for making the no brainer trade that took advantage of Billy King, similar to the way Saunders took advantage of Lebron James. Double standard. I mean by your standards we can't give credit to Danny Ainge yet since those Brooklyn picks haven't produced any more wins.

I mean you need to define what turning it around means to you. By your standards, if you think the Wolves are 4 years away from "turning it around" I would imagine not a lot of teams have turned it around.

Random game I had in mind while procrastinating studying......If you would to match each with a current playoff team, with that player playing similiar minutes on that team replacing the closest same position player on the roster, (and for the sake of the game, stays on that team past this year), what would be the ideal best fit for each of the top rookies?

Not including the Pacers, Thunder, Hornets, Jazz and heat, as these teams already got lottery picks in this draft;

Each player gets assigned to one team* 11 Rookies

Towns- Warriors replacing Bogut, and taking some of Ezelis minutes away. Just too easy....though I guess some could argue that it wouldn't be "ideal" for Towns in the long run as he would be playing secondre fiddle to Curry (and Thompson and Green), but the age differences are enough that without a doubt it would be the most ideal situation for him

Russell- Dallas- replacing Dwill. Ideal situation for Dallas as they need their next potential star, and are lacking an elite young guard. Good for his career as Dallas is a relatively big market.

Okafor- Spurs replacing Duncan. Not sure if the right now fit is ideal for either party, as Okafor would have to play within the system and the Spurs frontline defense would be poor, but I think Pop can help Okafor reach his full potential better than anyone else.

Porzingis- Detroit replacing Harris- great fit next to drummond and SVG, good fit longterm for both parties

Hezonja- Clippers Since he only plays 17 minutes, he would replace a backup 3. I think him replacing Pierce for the Clippers would be the best fit for him...giving another atheltic player to run with their big 3 with high potential

WCS- Cleveland, replacing Mozgov. Finally gives them an athletic defensive center that fits next to love and could matchup better than Mosgov when the warriors go small

Muiday- Memphis- Easy choice, with Conley out, they need any form of a guard. Also with conley's free agency, could be a decent long term fit

Stanley Johnson- Raptors- replacing Ross. Maybe not the greatest upgrade as of right now for the Raptors, but a good long term fit and a capable defender to throw at Lebron in the playoffs.

Kaminsky- stays with the hornets

Winslow- stays with the heat

Turner- Stays with the Pacers

Lyles- Stays with the Jazz

Booker- Celtics, replacing Evan Turner. Adding much needed shooting Boston, can start at the 2 or come off the bench. Good size next to IT

Payne- Stays with the Thunder

(2 remaining none lottery none-playoff team rookies)

Jokic- Blazers replacing Ed davis (or MEyers leonard) . Good fit next to the shooters.....team probably needs a more skillful big

LAst spot: Atlanta, the team that I couldn't see as an ideal match for any of the above rookies, kinda gets screwed, as theres kind of a drop off here, unless i'm missing someone (richardson is already on a playoff team). That being said, Bobby Portis replacing Mike Scott can be a nice presence on their bench. ,

When he passed:

Andrew Wiggins / Shabazz Muhammad / Tayshaun Prince
Kevin Garnett / Nemanja Bjelica / Adreian Payne / Damjan Rudez
Karl-Anthony Towns / Gorgui Dieng / Nikola Pekovic

The team he inherited had no future. Everyone knew Love was on his way out and Flip got a good haul for him anyways. The team was transformed from a team that finished 12th in the league with no future to a team that is still right around the same place in the standings but is built around a core with three studs 21 and younger, plus other young pieces.

Has every move he made been perfect? No. But to say he didn't turn the franchise around is flat out wrong.

Well, that happened....

27 points, 9 rebounds (NBA season-long double-double streak snapped), 2 assists, 2 blocks, 1 game-winner

Karl Anthony-Towns is absolutely unbelievable, he is truly special.

Nemanja Bjelica got 11 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and a huge block.

I'm so envious of you Wolves fans. You guys already had it good with Wiggins spearheading your future, and now you drafted a player even better than him.

Towns is so freaking good, God I'm so jealous. I would do anything to get him on the Suns. I wish the TWolves can hire Kahn for a little bit and the Suns somehow rip him off and acquire Towns or something.

Towns is so good he's the type of player that's gonna make people hate the TWolves because of how much he's gonna dominate the rest of the league.

IMO, best prospect since LeBron.

Hmmm. Durant comes to mind, as does Oden (before the injuries took), Anthony Davis. No one else really leaps out. Paul in his second or third season, that's when he took flight. As far as prospects, that's who comes to mind but to think that this 20 year-old stands with anyone else you care to name back a dozen years is pretty damned impressive... and yeah, he has an argument over most of them, and could in theory one day surpass Durant (though we'll see).

Anyway, bloody marvelous. Definitely as far as actual rookie seasons go, I mean we haven't seen a rookie season like this for quite a while.

I really hope that they don't mess up Towns, even though I don't think that's possible. One of the more impressive rookie seasons since Blake, Towns has really shown he can do it all. With his age and upside it's amazing how high the limit really is. Towns is making the Wolves a must own league pass next year, he's that good.
