Have you read anything about the RPM on fastballs and how important it is.

Where I've seen it:
- The tweet comparing Wade Davis and Hatcher
- Jeff Sullivan's (think it was his chat) chat yesterday when he was explaining why Nathan Eovaldi has the velo but isn't elite.
- just now in this post.

Is there something to the spin or revolutions on the fastball?
I'll go find the chat and copy and paste what he said about Eovaldi.

Analytics?
Scouting?
Whichever one you pick....guys like him and Barnes are hard working players, with a lot of grit and chips on their shoulder. I want them in my foxhole.

My sentiments exactly. Find a way to keep the players that help you win games. Ditch the bad contracts off the roster even if it means swallowing the money to get rid of them. Dumping Guerrero should be a no-brainer. Crawford is the tougher proposition given the money left on his deal and the fact that he's still seen as a productive player if healthy. Maybe we can rotate players on the DL to keep both Barnes and Culberson on the roster. I'm in no rush to bring Crawford, Grandal, or Kendrick back but it looks unavoidable. By that, I mean that I would rather make sure they are fully healthy before possibly bringing them back too soon to struggle to get back into the swing of things.

Spin Rate of Pitches

I'm not well versed on these sort of things, but it is my understanding that pitches with higher spin rates typically have reduced velocity and sharper movement or bigger breaks outside of knuckleballs. Pitches with lower spin rates generally have higher velocity but less movement (e.g. a straight fastball) while those with higher spin rates usually exhibit more movement with less velocity (e.g. a cut fastball or curveball). This may explain the criticism of Eovaldi as possibly being effective with a straight fastball while he struggles to control the breaks of his offspeed pitches, but it's a personal theory on my part.

I didn't realize our Charlie Hustle used to be a Giant. He'll celebrate his birthday tomorrow as well.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/jeff-sullivan-fangraphs-chat-4816/

Jeff Sullivan: I believe so
9:25
jtt: Why isn’t Eovaldi better?
9:26
Jeff Sullivan: People get blinded by the fastball velocity and ignore that the spin isn’t special. It’s hard, but it’s still hittable, somewhere in between a four-seam and a two-seam in a way. So it’s a pitch you can put in play, and it’s a pitch you can also count on seeing before the splitter comes out with two strikes
9:26
Jeff Sullivan: I still like Eovaldi fine but the velocity makes people think he should be a Cy Young candidate

Yea. Culberson to the Rockies for a Scutaro that ruined Dodger fan's 2012.
I truly appreciate the way he's fought back from adversity to get back in the big leagues.

yesterday was the last day of the Oregon convention. was watching the game on my phone from the back of the hall again and yeah ump blew the calls on 3 out of those 4 pitches but it was mostly on AJ's inability to frame it correctly, not even to sell a ball to a strike but a strike as a strike. what a horrible framing job by AJ in evey start this season so far. even for the one that was slightly below the knees out of that four pitch walk, above average framing catcher would have gotten all four pitches as strikes. wish we would trade AJ away. I would send him to Rays for Hank Conger or to Mariners for MIke Zunino straight up, eat AJ's salary, or even consider throwing them a bone of a lower level C prospect to do the job. two best framers in all of baseballl are currently without a regular job. both comes with tremendous potential as batters, MIke with power especially.

just as a reference, the final boss' four seam which clocks at 91 currently(below his prime), was spinning at 2800 rpm(as good as his prime) or higher. this is how he got 5 SOs in his first 6 outs as a major leaguer.

I don't wish injury on anybody but I am not crying tears at all that Trayce is getting a shot in LF.

3 straight hits to start on CUeto who is hovering around 88-89.
usually a 91-92 pitcher.

good point by Nomar on Seager (who isn't the fastest player) going 1st to 3rd on Turner's hit.

That wins ball games and I see us being better there this year with Dave at the helm.

A nice zero from Kazmir here would be awesome.

Psychologically even a 1 spot makes them feel like they can chip away.
Come on Kaz.

We deserve to not get crapped on by the Giants in the early goings of every season.
