Race for 8 seed in NBA is a joke.

Post#1 » by BNelley24 » Tue Apr 12, 2016 1:19 am

What is the point? Race for the 8 seed to earn some extra revenue for the team? In the NBA, unlike EVERY other pro sports league, the low seeds have 0.0% chance to win the NBA title. So what is the point? It is what I, as a 76ers fan, endured for almost a decade. We were perennially a low playoff seed and wasted our time in the playoffs. All it did was hurt us as a franchise as our draft picks sucked. We stagnated and had no hope as a franchise.

Give me some reasons to give a damn & try to help me see why 8 seeds in the NBA isn't just a scam by the NBA to make more $? Yes, of course most of you will point out the few 1st round upsets, but when it comes down to it that didn't mean jack $&@#^ because those teams didn't win the title.

I truly wish the NBA reduced the # of playoff teams from 16 to 8.

4 on each side. It would make the regular season more meaningful and would bring the 8 teams that legitimately had a shot to win the title. Of course the chances of this happening are the same as me going on a date with Mia Khalifa tonight...Let's hear it. Convince me to give 2 ****.

You are absolutely right. I'm sure the last 4 years as a 76ers fan was much more entertaining.

Yeah.. Who cares if it's 16 or 8? Same result in the end right?
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

There's essentially no point to pro sports at all apart from entertainment value.

People like to make the playoffs because of the entertainment value.

Not super complicated.

This is why the first round used to be 5 games.

I honestly believe the first round should be three games, the second 5, and the last 2 rounds 7 games.

All 7 games series for each round is absurd.

My dream scenario for the NBA Playoff;

Get rid of divisions first of all. In the NBA no on gives a **** about division rivalry.

Top 3 teams in each conference make the playoffs. Then there is a play in, 1-game series between 4 teams to get the #4 seed.

For example. If the season ended today in the NBA with my playoff system.

Western Conference;
Seeds
1) Golden State Warriors
2) San Antonio Spurs
3) Oklahoma City Thunder
4) Decided by mini-playoff

4th seed play in games;

4 LA Clippers vs. 7 Dallas Mavericks
5 Portland Trailblazers vs. Memphis Grizzlies

Both are 1 and done games. Winners play each other 2 days later. This gives the high seeds a well & deserved rest before their series. Also makes the playoffs 100x more entertaining for low seeds.

Actually, yes they have been! That is what people on this forum who don't like/understand the Hinkie method don't get. I would 1000000% take the 76ers team of the last 3 years over the waste of playoff years of the 2000s. While we suck, it is fun to see the young guys & to see the potential of the future. That is a major problem of the NBA. What is the difference between winning 40 games & losing in the first round & winning 10 games? Both = no title, except the 10 win team has 100% better chance to get a franchise changing player in the off-season.

Before the whole "championships are the only thing that matters" mentality, there was this thing called rooting for your team to do the best that it can.

There can only be one trophy winner, but all 29 other teams can hope to work on getting better, reach some of their potential, achieve a goal, and at least put up a fight even if they lose.

Well, of course I get that.....However, I can honestly say that the Iquodala years in Philly hurt the 76ers as a franchise. Making the playoffs with a team that had no shot to win the title & no prospects of getting a lot better in the future was not ENTERTAINING. It made people really not give 2 **** about the 76ers in Philly. When the Iverson teams made the playoffs for the first time people went nuts in this city about the 76ers because we had a superstar & while we may have lost the first few years in the 2nd round or so people were hyped because they could see the team getting better in the future.

I dont know, for me its more fun to root for my team to win rather than be indifferent and spend half the season looking at draft prospects. Even if the team is unlikely to do much in the playoffs the road there is pretty entertaining and there is always a chance that your team pulls an upset.

Im sure sixers fans can agree that its not fun to watch your team tank, its exciting to think about your future and it might benefit long term but the games arent nearly as fun to watch when your team gets crashed game after game, not to mention having to root against your team at certain situations.

I HATE the we're treadmill so let's tank argument. Not everyone can win. There have been some great 8 seed upsets. Denver vs Seattle was awesome. So was Dubs vs Mavs.

According to your argument might as well tank if you're going to be the 4th seed or lower.

Of the 66 NBA champions, 64 of them were either a No. 1 seed (47), a No. 2 seed (10) or a No. 3 seed (7).

They weren't going to win anything but watching a young Jordan taking on a legendary Celtics team was awesome to watch.

Not going to convince me. Of course I root for my team. I will always be a 76ers fan even if they went 0-82 for 20 straight seasons. They represent my city. However, how can you be so blind as to not see the total scam the league owners pull when they get to make the playoffs & get more $ with an undeserving p.o.s. team.

Didn't one of the 90s Knicks teams almost pull it off? can't remember the circumstances, but I thought I recall them making a sweet run with Ewing injured.

If an 8th seed wins, it'll probably be a situation where an elite team is missing player(s) due to injury and racks up some losses, but then gets them back before the playoffs. But at some point if the league goes on long enough, and 8th seed will get hot and go all the way and it'll be glorious.

Actually, yes that is my argument! I WISH it wasn't like that because I LOVE basketball & the NBA, but the damn truth is the way the league works & winning teams are made it makes more sense to try and get lucky in the lottery than to waste a year as a low playoff seed (unless the 1 exception is that you are a team on the up & up with a potential superstar)...If I was commish and $ wasn't an issue & I had total control I would get rid of about 10-15 teams. Less teams = better players on more teams = better competition. Of course, it would never, ever happen.

In MLB, the Wild card can win the World Series.
In NHL 8 seeds have won the Stanley Cup behind a hot goaltender
In NFL the Wild Card has won the Super Bowl

In the NBA the 8 seed will NEVER EVER EVER win a Title, because that is just how the sport of basketball works. It is what it is.

That is my exception. Watching the Thunder with Westbrook & Durant make the playoffs during their first season was exciting. Teams like that are 1 reason I would maybe care about a low seed in the playoffs.

here we go again. a typical 76ers fan who prefers 10 wins per season over being in a playoff race hence -technically- title race.

If the playoffs were the way op suggested

1)gsw
2)Spurs
3)okc
4) mini playoff winner.

What chance does the 4th seed have vs gsw? Or what chance does any team in the east have vs Cleveland?

Like someone else said, NBA is for entertainment. People like watching their team play.

I'm sure fans of teams like the Pistons, Hornets, Mavericks, Jazz, Grizzlies, etc would rather sit out of the playoffs while getting the 18 pick in the draft after hard fought seasons. Riiiiiiight.

The team I follow has a chance to win the lottery, but I would trade it to watch a respectable team. This tanking nonsense is ruining the sport. You should always play to win. I'm starting to hope that the 76ers plan blows up so it will be a cautionary tale to future gms who consider Hinkie's plan of fielding a D-League roster for years to position for top draft picks. It's not a good look for a team, the fans, and the league.
