I like Gilmartin. One more year in the minors (a full year at Gwinett), and I think he might be ready.

I like him more than Minor, has more potential. He's better at locating pitches than Minor, and doesn't fold when running into trouble. I laughed when some compared Minor to Glavine, Gilmartin is actually more similar to Glavine.

Never understood the Minor/Glavine comparisons, but that's the curse of being a left-handed pitching prospect in Braves organization, everyone is going to compare you to Glavine. Hope the best for Gilmartin, DOB was saying that this is going to be the bridge to him competing for a rotation spot in Spring Training.

Braves encouraged by strong outing from Teheran
Last year Julio Teheran was ranked as Baseball America’s fourth best prospect at midseason, behind Bryce Harper, Mike Trout and Matt Moore.
While those other three have been starring for their big league clubs this summer (the Nationals, Angels and Rays respectively), Teheran has struggled with inconsistency. He fell back to the 24th highest-rated prospect this time around, with Baseball America saying he’s “taken a step back.”
After going 15-3 with a 2.55 ERA in 25 games (24 starts) last season for Triple-A Gwinnett to win international league pitcher of the year, Teheran is 7-7 with a 5.05 ERA in 23 starts this season. But when Teheran does what he did Tuesday night in Norfolk, the entire organization takes notice.
Teheran pitched eight dominant innings, allowing one run, striking out nine and walking none. Braves general manager Frank Wren was watching on TV in his suite at Turner Field during the Braves-Padres game and manager Fredi Gonzalez said his Wednesday started on a good note after he read about it in the minor league reports.
Gonzalez said Teheran has been working on some mechanical changes with Gwinnett pitching coach Marty Reed. Wren characterized them as just getting back to being more athletic.
“I think sometimes kids get so caught up in mechanics that they kind of lose their athleticism,” Wren said. “Everything (is geared around) trying to free him up and letting his arm work. And he did a good job of that (Tuesday) night.” http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-braves-blo ... raves_blog

Braves' prospects keeping up work in offseason
Just two weeks removed from a painful and abrupt end to the 2012 season, the Braves are already preparing for the 2013 season. Along with planning for the annual reconstruction process, the team's front office is keeping tabs on how some of its top prospects are faring in the Arizona Fall League and a few other winter leagues. http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/arti ... l&c_id=atl

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Braves have hired former Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee as their minor league pitching coordinator. He also reports that former Reds assistant hitting coach Ronnie Ortegon will become the Braves' minor league hitting coordinator.

With their 1st round draft pick #32 overall, the Braves selected High School OF/1b Braxton Davidson from Arden, North Carolina. He has chosen to sign with the Braves instead of attending UNC.

Luke Dykstra, an infielder at Westlake High School in suburban Los Angeles, was drafted in the seventh round by the Braves. He is the son of Lenny Dykstra.

Christopher Crawford from ESPN said:
"In terms of pure offensive upside, there aren't too many prep hitters who have more than Davidson. He's one of the few left-handed hitters who has a chance to hit for both average and power, and the bat has a chance to play either in the outfield or first base -- with the latter much more likely, although Atlanta obviously has first base taken care of for a while. The Braves haven't developed hitters as well as they have pitchers, but if he shows the same offensive potential he showed over the summer, he could be a middle of the order hitter for the Braves in three to four seasons."

Not many players make it to the majors from the Dominican League, but the Braves have 2 17 year old Ofers certainly worth watching. Leadoff man Randy Ventura is hitting .436 with an incredible 23 steals in 15 games, and Raysheandall Michel is hitting .389.

Man, this thread is funny to look back on. All that hype over Bethancourt, and Gilmartin, and all that praise I gave to Wren, and in the end nothing worked out the way we thought it would.

Aaron Blair belongs in the majors NOW. He proved himself last year in the homerun happy PCL, and he's proving it again this year. There's no baseball reason for him to still be in the minors.
And Newcomb shouldn't be far behind. No getting around him being a TOR stud. I'd bring him up to Atl midseason.

Blair is doing well for sure 2.25 ERA and 12k in 12IP
Swanson is hitting .333 with a .415OB and 3 steals.
Albies is hitting .289 with a .357OB and 4 runs
Newcomb has a 1.80 ERA with 9k in 10IP
Fried has a 1.64 ERA with 11k in 11IP
Sims has a 3 ERA with 16K in 9IP
if these guys work out for us we shouldn't have much of a problem winning 90+ games pretty soon.

Yup, and down in Rome, Jonathon Morales might turn out to be their 25th round steal of the draft. He's picked up where he left off last year with a .909 OPS. And last year, he threw out 44% of attempted steals. They like him defensively and offensively as a catcher.
Hopefully they add a power hitting OFer in this year's draft.

Thanks for the minor league stats updates, fellas.

He pitched 7 no-hit innings - with 1 walk and 10 SO's. See what I meant when I said last week that he doesn't belong in the minors?

Re: It's All About The Minor Leagues
The most pleasant surprise so far might be Rio Ruiz. He has barely more than 50 plate appearances, so it's too early to jump to conclusions, but if he keeps it up, we could see him replacing Adonis Garcia at 3B by the end of the season - and Garcia's defense has to be replaced, quite frankly. Rio looked like a huge flop last year at AA with an OPS at .657. But the Braves brass apparently still believed in him and promoted him to AAA where he has an OPS of .997. Kid is still just 21 (22 in May). The one thing that impressed me last year was - he draws walks - which is unusual for a young player, so he seems to have a very good idea of the strike zone.

Re: It's All About The Minor Leagues
While the SS position has been a debacle at the major league level for Atlanta, Swanson and Albies both look like they're ready for promotions. Albies singled, doubled and homered last night - bringing his OPS up to .905. 19 year old SS's at AA just don't do that unless they're special. And Swanson's OPS is higher - at .914. He's also got 6 steals. He really should be playing in AA now, imo. I know they want to keep them both at SS for now, but that shouldn't be the reason to keep Swanson in A ball. Just alternate them both between 2B and SS if they're at the same level. It's really good to see Albies start showing some pop - the Braves must be thrilled with his progress.
