I think Brooks holds Ernie's fate in his hands this season. If he bombs and the team doesn't improve, then I think it'll be Ernie that gets the axe this time. It depends on the guarantees in Brooks's contract, but with how much money he's getting, I think he'll have the safest HC job in the NBA for the next five years.
Aldridge already reported that all five years are guaranteed. So, if things go south enough to merit a shakeup, Ted would either have to fire both EG and Brooks (and eat the rest of Brooks' sizable contract), or fire EG and hope that the next GM is fine with keeping Brooks -- who, in this scenario, would be coaching a team that isn't performing to expectations. The latter is is a dicey proposition, and would affect Ted's ability to recruit a topflight GM replacement.
The length and size of Brooks' contract gives EG more security, not less.
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.
