I knew this guy was a freak from his first epic pre season basket, a sweet oop from none other than Will "Thrill" Bynum.

Basketball reference has him 6th in defensive rating and 4th in defensive win shares among all players not just Centers. ESPN has him 17th of 462 players in DRPM. Those are elite rankings.

This has been discussed. He's the best defensive rebounder in the league, and has really quick hands for steals. Those two things are what gives him a top DPRM. His awareness on switches, rim protection, and post defense in general need a lot of work. Don't get me wrong, though -- that's to be expected. Very few 22-year-olds are elite defenders. KCP has a lot of the same problems with awareness with anything but on-the-ball defense, but the purely athletic element of wing defense is much bigger, and KCP is almost as phenomenal an athlete as Drummond, I'd guess.

They're both going to get signifcantly better on the defensive end.

Yes this has been discussed, but aparently still not understood by everyone. His rebounds, steals, and blocks are giving him good grades in these stats because they're all important elements of team defense and these are team defensive stats, meaning they take everything into account that leads to whether the other team scores or not when you're on the court, and not just about individual defense vs your man. Which is why KCP doesn't grade well in these despite being a good on-ball defender.

For some reason people here put more value on individual than team defense when judging players, which keeps misleading them when it comes to Drummond's effect on defense, but team defense is actually more important.
