Lakers coaching search 2016
I was high on Thibs but
Thibs is gone, Scott Brooks is off, who you guys got??
I think Luke is a good Candidate but if he will be gone, we better get from NCAA, Shaka Smart perhaps?? then Shane Battier as 1 of the assistant coaches

Re: New Coach??
#1 Coach K (probably should be ridiculed for suggesting this over and over but I did the same thing as a Seahawks fan until Pete Carrol actually signed on).
#2 Ollie ( still think he is the best strategic young minded and modern option with skills and philosophy on both ends of the court)
#3 Luke (new royalty nba clout for recruiting, ties to the mothership, good mind, inside internship with the most successful team in a single season and advanced metrics meets upbeat attitude)

Agree!!
I just hope Lakers will stay away (don't give them interview) from B. Shaw, Blatt, Fisher, Del Negro, George Karl, Dunleavy, Tim Floyd, Madsen, Wittman, Nate McMillan, Monty Williams, Marc Jackson and Sam Mitchell.
Lakers should interview
Jeff Van Gundy
Kevin Ollie
Coach K
Luke Walton
Shaka Smart
Messina

Great list so far. My gut says Luke will be the coach.

Re: Lakers coaching search 2016
Terrible timing on firing Scott, because Thibs and Brooks are off the market already. Then again, with this management, expecting timely execution and good decisions at the same time just isn't possible. I guess at this point, Luke is the best option, although he is also risky considering how inexperienced he is. JVG is probably a good candidate too since he is a big name who has credibility within the NBA circle.

Re: Lakers coaching search 2016
1. Budenholzer (unlikely but his contract does run out at the end of the season, he has been fantastic with the hawks, let him come to L.A, actually might help us land Horford also)
2. Luke Walton (former long time laker who knows the organisation and can actually coach)
3. Kevin Ollie (pretty good coach at collegiate level, could do a lot worse, could be our own Brad Stevens, which is just what we need with this young core)
Would be ok with Messina or Shaka Smart also, would not touch JVG with a 10 foot pole, when was the last time he coached, it has been years and years.
what worked 9 years ago will not work now

Re: Lakers coaching search 2016
I woulda liked Brooks. I've never been a Thibs fan, so I'm glad he's gone.
Personally, I dont think Mark Jackson is bad for what he is. He develops youth fairly well, and once you have gone as far as you can with him, you get someone better.
K would be great, but is he really available?
I would pass on Luke. I'm sorry, but coaching last years champs for 44 games hardly makes you great. The Warriors are just a well-oiled machine from top to bottom. West has done such an amazing job. The Lakers might be firing GM's and one of the owners coming up. 4 straight seasons of just complete wreckage. If I were Luke, I'd stick around GS a little longer...and I'd pick a team that's a bit more stable than the Lakers.
Mainly, I think we need to fix our front office. Phil in his heyday couldn't have had this years team sniffing the playoffs.

Perfect list. My thoughts exactly. Coach K isn't happening but he would be number one on my list by far too.
I'm happy with any of the three but I prefer Ollie over Luke assuming that Coach K says thanks but no thanks.

Re: Lakers coaching search 2016
I have 1) Messina 2) Luke 3) Ollie. Ollie jumps to #1 if he gives us a legit shot at KD of course.

Anyone think we could get Jay Wright? Could be an interesting wild card / dark horse candidate.

Re: Lakers coaching search 2016
You know what, now that I think about it JVG might be a "Jim Buss" move since JVG and Phil hate each other.

Re: Lakers coaching search 2016
I'd like to see Ollie get a shot! Plus giving us a chance at bringing in KD and a serviceable big in the offseason.
I don't want JVG, Karl, Mark Jackson, etc..
It's time to start the post-Kobe era right with an up and coming young coach to develop this young Lakers core.

I agree wholeheartedly. Got ridiculed myself here for suggesting coach K because he's old.
#4 Messina. I think his offense and Russell would be a good match.

How do you judge a coach? Team success? Communication skills? An intangible vibe?
Even more important, how do you begin to judge assistant coaches?

Re: Lakers coaching search 2016
I'd like to add, JVG, no thanks. Not one bit interested in having his defense only mentality here. In the playoffs, you need to have a half court system that works as the ball slows down. He doesn't.
Plus, the image of him clinging onto legs on the floor shouting like a baby while being dragged around is just too much estrogen for a Lakers head coach.
