Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
What if we commence the 2016-17 season and Reggie Jackson is the exact same player, showing zero improvement? If by the all-star break his stats are identical this years, would you prefer to trade or keep him?
I would be willing to trade Jackson for the "right" player, however in the absence of said player I would keep him as his contract becomes much more attractive once the cap increases.

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
Keep him. Reggie is already playing at a near all-star level. I expect him to have some minor improvements going forward but at 26 he is probably done making big improvements. Guys like Andre, Stanley Johnson, Tobias, and KCP absolutely need to make big strides in order for us to be contenders though. They are young and inexperienced enough to reasonably expect large improvements. Here is how i view player progression by age (there are obviously exceptions):
18-22 Massive improvement potential (Stanley Johnson, Andre Drummond)
22-26 Large improvement potential (KCP, Tobias, Hilliard, Bullock, Dinwiddie)
26-30 Marginal Improvement potential (Reggie, Morris, Meeks*, Baynes)
30+ Stable/Going Downhill (Steve Blake, Joel Anthony, Tolliver)
*If he wasn't injury prone

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
I was more leaning towards the trade em train at the end of the season. After watching the playoffs, i have hoped off that train. He showed poise and was running the team. The problem was he or the team couldn't sustain it the whole game. There is absolutely no reason why he won't improve and fact of the matter is , that boy is clutch

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
I hope to see some development in Reggie as a decision-maker. I'd also like to see more effort on defense, but that will likely require someone to lessen his ball-handling load on offense. The only guy on the team right now that has any potential to be that guy is Stanley, and he's definitely not ready for it. KCP, as much as I like him, isn't ever going to run an offense well.

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
I think all Jackson needs to do is work on his conditioning to help his defense and to continue to make the right decisions as the primary ballhandler. It's not about stats with him. If he doesn't gain more chemistry and link with Drummond more, then by the end of next season, I'd definitely vouch for trading him. If we can upgrade the PG position, I'd definitely do it. I don't think Jackson is as safe as he seems now. He'll be in his second year of his contract so he'll be moved pretty easily considering he's a starting PG. But I do believe with continuity alone Jackson will be better next season. I just don't think he can get any better than he is now. He just needs to work on being more efficient.

"Figuring out how to attack defenses, be a starter (on offense) and figure out how teams were covering me," Jackson said. "Just seeing where people challenged me and made me had bad games, so I can try and go in and improve on those aspects and really see what guys did. I need to be better with quicker decisions."

This was his first full season as a starting pg and led his team to the playoffs, I'm really looking forward to what he does next season.

Some guys want their own team to pad their numbers and pound their chests shouting "Me, me, me, me, me"
From the sounds of it RJ isn't one of them!
Takes some real dedication to look back through all your bad games and decipher HOW & WHY they happened.
Only by knowing the how & why can you begin to correct it

Very good to hear from him and that he understands what he needs to improve on.

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
He's the best point guard we have had in a very long time so I would rather not have to replace him unless we are getting another starting pg back in return. Reggie isn't perfect, but after Chauncey our pg situation was bleak and I'm not ready to relive the days where guys like Stuckey, Bynum, Calderon, Prince, Knight, and Jennings were our floor generals.

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
It's probably fair to say that he won't be making any more huge leaps in terms of his skillset. He's not going to suddenly jump higher, develop a skyhook or start dishing out between the leg bounce passes that hit somebody perfectly in stride. But it's ridiculous to suggest he won't continue to develop at a cerebral level.
As has been said, this was his first full year as a starting PG and it's not the least bit uncommon for guys to take several years to develop that aspect of their game, especially at the PG position. Of course that is no guarantee, but hopefully the game slows down for him a little each year and he get's better at reading/reacting, learning to play with his team and begins making better decisions over all.

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
He could make a pretty notable jump just by making a more concerted effort to get to the line. His bread and butter is breaking down defenses off the dribble, I think he could get more than 4 FTA pretty easily.
That, and acquiring someone who can take some of the playmaking/shot creation responsibility should help him a lot.

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
I don't get the "Jackson is done improving" argument. He's spent 1 season as a starting pg and team leader. Of course he should improve. The big knocks on him coming into the season where his general floor game/turnovers and his outside shot. He obviously put a bunch of time in on his shooting and got up to respectable 35%. He also cut his turnovers down considerably. He's shown the willingness to work on his shortcomings, so I don't see any reason to expect that to change.

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
Wow, this thread is surprising to me. I think RJ had a great season. It was his first full season with the team. He was the focal point of the offense for sure and by the end of the season, teams were playing him differently. He's going to have to learn to distribute better, but he is a baller. I think if we have a better backup, that will help as well to give him a few more breaks.

Honestly, if we're right back where we're at next year and we still lose in the 1st round, then I think we explore all options IMO.
As young as this roster is, it's not like they each don't have flaws nor are any superstars (Yet?).

I'll be highly disappointed if we were a 8th seed and got swept again. That would show we didn't work to hardDBC10 wrote:Honestly, if we're right back where we're at next year and we still lose in the 1st round, then I think we explore all options IMO.

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
I'll be honest; based on what we saw the end of last season I was hoping for closer to 8 apg out of him this year. He had a bit more of a scorers mentality than I wanted to see. But it's hard to know how much of that is coaching and just sowing his oats as a made guy. At times (including the playoffs) he looked to be more the distributor I want him to be. I'd rather a 16 & 8 guy who can pick his spots and knows when to take over to a 20 & 6 volume guy.
But hell, I think he can actually be a 20 & 8 guy pretty easily as we continue to develop chemistry and as he develops as a lead guard. The guy is a baller.

couldn't agree more.
I thought his score first mentality was going to be a huge hindrance in the playoffs and surprisingly he started playing like a floor general as oppose to a scorer.

Re: Reggie Jackson.........Next season what if?
I would like to see the Pistons get Reggie a backup who has been a starter in this league who is like 28-34 years old. Steve Blake is a good vet, Reggie needs someone who has been at least somewhat in his shoes as a backup. Having Tim Hardaway is nice, but he needs a bettter backup PG as well. Someone who can at least challenge him in practice. I feel like I can keep up with Steve Blake, I can only imagine what Reggie feels ilke.

I think it was SVG who wanted him to be really aggressive on offense. I remember in a interview he had that he basically wanted him to be like Tony Parker.
