im not sure the exact figure or what he exactly owns but ive heard the number is damn near 50% or local property and such. the reason a lot of people hate him is his attitude, and the fact hes been buying up land at bottom dollar and held on to it until the profit was sky high and he then flipped it. for a while he wasnt doing any good, other than tearing down old buildings(which is good but still ugly). some of his empty lots were still overgrown with weeds and junk too.

hes building on a lot now and bringing a lot of business in, but again, it sat for years and he flipped it to make a huge profit.

That plus the subprime lending. I'd rather not get into economics/politics too much, since I do think bringing an MLS team is a very good thing for the city, and he's done other good things as well.

But I'll leave this here, an interesting read: http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/special-reports/2015/07/01/quicken-loans-blight-dilemma/29537285/

Basically he's doing a lot to fix Detroit's blight, but his company probably had a hand in causing parts of it as well.

Don't hate on Dan Gilbert. He's single handedly changed the city of Detroit. He's probably the one of 3 men doing a great job. I don't care if he's making lots of money. That's his business. But he's most definitely investing it back into the city. He's brought so many new things to Detroit and I love it. Let him keep making his money. As long as people move in, he's doing a great job. The city is cleaner more than ever and will continue to be. The mayor is taking care of the community. Gilbert with the business. Illitch is just waiting for the Tigers to win. But he's making great projects too. That's a Red Wings stadium and a Wayne State School of Business. Having an MLS team there means more money and fans and people. Detroit is changing positively because of guys like Gilbert. He just so happens to own the Cavaliers too. I can imagine him selling the team after Lebron retires.

Gilbert has done alot of good for that city. Downtown is looking awesome and definitely on the rise.

Gilbert bought Lebron, it just happened that the Cavs were the way to do that. If the Cavs ended up with Darko playing with Dareus Miles and Larry Hughes in front of their historically apathetic fan base (prior to 2003) there's no way Gilbert is dropping a dime on them and they are likely the OKC Thunder. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Gilbert try multiple times to buy the Pistons from Davidson?

Anyone else find it a tad funny that a verified NBA owner has ~6000 twitter followers? lol

RE: MLS. Way too late now as I follow Chelsea and am also a Michigan Bucks fan. I would've loved this when I was six and MLS just started. Instead, Columbus of all places got a team. Though if Detroit gets an MLS team and signs Frank Lampard or David Villa then we're talking. :D

RE: Gilbert. From personal experience and from others, he's a piece of ****. Anyone who insists their company uses Comic Sans of all fonts in their emails (Seriously?!) deserves to be scorned. And mocked. Not helping is the fact that turnover at his company is hilariously high. As for why he bought the Cavs, he did want to buy the Pistons but Bill Davidson wasn't selling.

I wonder if they could develop a stadium at the old tiger stadium site in cork town? I have no idea who owns that space.

Arenas do not bring people to cities. I keep hearing this and it's such a slippery slope fallacy it's not even funny.

EDIT: And aside from downtown, the rest of Detroit is still a dump, sadly.
