http://espn.go.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/20577/dont-forget-gm-dave-gettleman-loves-his-hog-mollies-when-he-picks-at-no-30

Picks: Carolina has six picks beginning with the 30th overall, which is expected to come sometime between 10:30 and 11 p.m. Thursday. Rounds 2 and 3 will begin on Friday at 7 p.m., with the Panthers holding picks No. 62 and 93. Rounds 4-7 will be held on Saturday, beginning at noon. Carolina has picks 129 (fourth round), 168 (fifth) and 252 (seventh). Their sixth-round pick was traded to Chicago last season in exchange for defensive end Jared Allen.

Needs: Cornerback is the biggest need after Carolina rescinded the franchise tag of Pro Bowl cornerback Josh Norman, so look for at least one to be added in the draft. It seems unlikely one will be taken in the first round based on general manager Dave Gettleman’s draft history, but that could change if the right player falls. Ohio State’s Eli Apple or Houston’s William Jackson III could be enticing. Defensive end, offensive line and safety also are needs, but as Gettleman has said repeatedly he doesn’t draft on need.

First-round projection: Gettleman loves his big men. He calls them “hog mollies." So don’t be surprised if he goes with a defensive end or defensive tackle. Clemson defensive end Kevin Dodd was my projection in the NFL Nation mock draft, but the Panthers just as easily could go with Oklahoma State end Emmanuel Ogbah or one of the top tackles still available. Mississippi’s Robert Nkemdiche, Louisiana Tech’s Vernon Butler or Baylor’s Andrew Billings could be options.

Odds of a trade: Gettleman has made three trades during his first three drafts, but none involving a first-round pick. He likes having the fifth-year option that comes with that pick. Having said that, with only six picks Gettleman could be tempted to trade out of the first round if he could add a second- and possibly third-round pick. It’ll depend on who’s on the board when it gets to 30, but there could be several teams -- Cleveland one -- that might be looking to trade into the first round for a quarterback.

Wild-card thought: It might be tempting for the Panthers to select Heisman Trophy-winning running back Derrick Henry out of Alabama or Arkansas tight end Hunter Henry in the first round. Neither likely will be there when Carolina selects in the second round. Both would give quarterback Cam Newton more weapons. That the draft is deep in defensive ends and tackles means a decent one could be there in the second round

Who do you guys want? I really didn't pay attention to any college sports this year. Do we draft a cornerback in the 1st?

i have no idea honestly. Gettleman likes big guys so we probably pick a DL or an OL.

we all thought we needed a WR last draft and we picked a LB (worked out better than i expected), Gettleman sticks to his BPA philosophy pretty well so i doubt we pick a CB unless one of the top ones falls like Hargreaves or Apple. someone who people think is a dark horse is Derrick Henry from Alabama, we have a private workout with him i think and we have a need at RB.

his NFL.com profile.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/vernon-butler?id=2555243

A big body in the middle of the Bulldogs' defense, Butler proved in his two years as a starter that he has the girth and nimble feet to clog up running lanes. Conference USA coaches rectified their error in not giving Butler all-conference recognition in 2014 (56 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss) by voting him first-team All-C-USA after his senior year (50 tackles, 10 TFL, three sacks, eight quarterback hurries). NFL teams will not miss the opportunity to add Butler to their interior.

PRO DAY RESULTS
40-yard dash: 5.15 seconds
Vertical: 33 1/2 inches
Broad jump: 9 feet, 3 inches
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Long-armed knee-bender who can play the role of low man at the point of attack. Plays with strong hands and good arm extension and can "peekaboo" both gaps as he reads which hole the running back heads for. Impressive stack and shed timing and power. Able to eat up double teams and keep his linebackers clean when asked to. Excellent athleticism. Can make plays all along the line of scrimmage. If blocker doesn't finish, Butler will work himself back into the play. Able to coordinate hands and feet smoothly and has change of direction and closing burst to become a dominant pass rusher from inside. Can slide from gap to gap as a pass rusher and is a perfect fit for twist-based defense. Generally attacks gaps with forward lean and ability to corner the edge when he has his man beat. Can stutter-step into pass rush to disrupt offensive lineman’s timing or generate a speed-to-power bull rush that can severely dent a pocket. Gives consistent effort and plays like a lead dog looking to eat.
WEAKNESSES Build is athletic, but a little bit top heavy. Will play with inconsistent base when his pad level gets too high trying to win through the gaps. Will try to out-muscle his opponent when his initial pass rush gets stuck in neutral, rather than use counter moves. For all of his potential and talent, wasn't as productive as NFL scouts are used to. Plays with some wasted energy and motion and needs to work more efficiently.
DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 1 or 2
NFL COMPARISON Muhammad Wilkerson
BOTTOM LINE Athletic interior lineman with long arms and outstanding athleticism that allows him to work on offensive linemen with a combination of power and quickness. Butler has a raw but diverse skillset as a pass rusher that should excite NFL evaluators who see the potential of what he can be with more coaching and experience. With his effort and defensive ball awareness, his ceiling appears to be high with a chance to become a high-level starter for an odd or even front defense.

When you roll guys in and out like we can, it makes for a long day at the office for the offensive linemen. -Gettleman

I know nothing about college football so I'll act excited.

Not as shocked as when I found out last year that we drafted a damn RB / LB, I thought GMan must be drunk a year ago.

Asked Gettleman if they'll draft a corner this weekend. "Yeah I, think so."
More than one? (he laughed)
