End of Season Series: Victor Oladipo

Post#1 » by Bensational » Sat Apr 30, 2016 11:15 pm

End Of Season Series

I've been too busy to continue this series lately, but here's the next one. Remember, let's try to focus on the good and celebrate that, rather than critiquing. (There are plenty of other threads for discussing player faults).

Here's a poll to get a feel for where everyone thinks our guys rank within their position at the end of the season, and going forwards. It will also be a nice chance to recap on some of the improvements players have made throughout the season.

So, where does he rank for you?

Half of the season he played like an average starter, the rest a top 10 SG. I think he finally feels comfortable out there after a few years of finding his way.

The career highs are certainly tantalizing. He should develop into a very capable scorer.

I think he was quite a bit worse than an average starter before New Year's. He definitely finished the season strong though.

Terrible start... Promising finish...

A guy with the tools of a potential star (Has shown flashes) but is still a player I consider above average at the moment. His mental pedigree at the start of last season I believe is probably did him in early on, as he just forced everything. It just seemed like he had the attitude of a proven star player which he wasn't even close to what he was producing on the court. Skiles benching him was huge as it turned him around and he looked like a much better player afterwards. He played within himself/team had a higher BBIQ and he looked like an all-star caliber we thought he would be at the end of the season.

My hope is with all the media attention going to Aaron Gordon, (Who I feel can handle it much more than Oladipo can at this point) Nikola Vucevic, and Mario Hezonja. This would probably give more motivation of reclaiming the title of being "Face of the Franchise" which would ultimately turn him into a Star caliber player.

Gripes... I still want him to fight over/ the screens and be more aware and improve his BBIQ in general. Though he is a pretty good man-to-man defender. He is a horrible rotation/team defender. That goes for him and Elfrid Payton. This team's defensive focus will from the perimeter, and these guys have to do a better job with staying with their guys.

All-in-all after seeing Oladipo finish strong I still have hope that he'll turn the corner.

Anyone have pre-all star/post-all star at the rim percentages (and the previous season splits as well)? Thinking back, that's the big improvement I remember.

I'd say he's pretty easily top 15 now, there isn't that many premier SG's at the moment.

Currently somewhere between a young Nick Anderson and a young Demar DeRozan (examples I've used recently).

Could be an all-star (Anderson was always in the discussion), but even if not, is a consistent 17-20ppg starter and a really good defender. Needs to work on his decision-making and shot selection.

Averaged 17.5ppg on 45.2% shooting as a starter this season. Averaged 19.4ppg on 47.4% shooting post All-Star break (28 games).

Nice stats. I'd call him at least a top-15 SG heading into next season.

Top 15. Consistency is preventing him from being in top 10.

I would rate Oladipo as a Top 10 SG, particularly when considering his age.

For me, I'd break SGs down like:

Superstars
Harden

Tier 2 Stars
Butler
Wade
Klay
DeRozan
Wiggins

Tier 3 Stars
Knight
McCollum
Oladipo
Beal
Middleton
Barton
JJ
Crawford
J.Johnson
Booker
Fournier
Ginobili
Monta

Above Average Starters/Role Players
Matthews, Hood, Bellinelli, E.Gordon, KCP, Korver, D.Green, Lee, JR Smith, A.Bradley, T.Allen

If he can get his FTAs up, it will make a major difference to his efficiency. I don't see him as a top 2 option on a contending team right now, but I see him as a crucial player to a contending team. Whether that be as a #3 option (not sure how he would handle having the ball in his hands that much less), or as an Iggy style 6th man, I think he would be a guy who's defense alone would be game changing.

Solid breakdown, but I definitely think that Bradley should replace Crawford and Fournier in your tier 3.

Move Wiggins down (for this season), Bradley and Hood up, Johnson and Barton down and I'd agree :)

I have him as a top 10 SG, he's around 7-9 to me. He's also one of the most well-rounded SG's in the game. He can pass, score, rebound, and can very well be in the All-NBA Defense discussion very soon, the only other SG's that can say the same things are Butler, Middleton, and Klay.

Consistency. Last year he played so well after the all star break then had a garbage start to the year.

If he can play like he keeps playing after all star breaks he will enter into the top 6-7 range.

I really don't rate Bradley. Good defender, but there's nothing about him that would make me want him to be a top 3 option on a good team. His numbers are all fine, just nothing special. He's not a sharpshooter, doesn't get to the FT line, doesn't get many assists.

Hood, on the other hand, I quite like and think is borderline Tier 3.

Well same could be kinda said about some of the players you put in tier 3.

Crawford - inefficient scorer, low rebounding and assist numbers, under-average defender.

JJ- Good shooter, doesn't excel in anything else

Fournier - Capable scorer, low rebounding and assist numbers, under-average defender. Doesn't really bring anything else to the table outside of scoring.

Bradley on the other hand brings you elite on ball defense ( can defend 1/2) and a decent shooting( 36 3p% on 5.4 3PA
