RJ and SJ numbers

Post#1 » by ducler » Thu May 5, 2016 6:00 pm

With #1 and #3 going up to the rafters, will Reggie and Stanley change their numbers?

I'd hope so. No reason not to.

I'd prefer that they didn't. I'm already used to seeing them as #1 and #3. Not a big deal though, obviously.

I'm with Kobe (& Pugz): friends come and go but banners hang forever!

If you're gonna retire numbers then those numbers should only be connected with that player (or coach or executive)...

Let's assume they let SJ keep #3 & he goes on to have an amazing career...do you retire #3 again or merely add his name to the one already hanging?

Probably against the grain here, but you could have easily retired Chuck Dalys Legacy without the #2 being involved.

Gonna have players like Jae Crowder wearing 99 in a decade cause all the normal #'s are retired

if we ever get to the point where we have a crazy amount of numbers up, then we can talk about making exceptions. or give certain guys a name in the rafters, rather numbers.

thats a different issue. if youre good enough to get your number up, the team of the future should still honor that by not wearing it. make your own dreams come true and strive for your own greatness.

Exactly

I am with you guys, what's so special about having your number raised if it's still going to be used, seems pretty straight forward to me,retire the # forever.

I think it's weird how many people are concerned about the number stitched to a shirt.

Who cares? They could hang an additional number 3 or 1 with a different name on it. People would get over it, life would continue. It's really quite amazing.

I like the idea of removing retired numbers from availability. It's the whole point of retiring them.
I guess it's a weird thing now because reggie and Stanley had their numbers before they were retired, so I don't know what the solution is. Personally I'd like them to change.

I understand your POV but I just don't see the point in retiring numbers if they're gonna remain active!

Can't have it both ways - either the number is retired and no one else uses it or it's active.

IMO teams didn't think long term when they started the practice of retiring numbers because as has been pointed out we're gonna run out of numbers at some point!

What teams should be doing is hanging a banner of the player's likeness! Kind of like a statue but easily moved lol

This way all numbers remain active always - but Ben Wallace in his prime remains forever

It's a way to honor a former player, and ultimately a publicity stunt to draw in fans.

That's about it. Odds are, Johnson and Jackson won't reach that level success in Detroit anyways.

Yeah Ben Wallace is a 4 time DPOY and Chauncey is in the second tier of greatest PGs to ever play the game (behind the likes of Magic, Oscar, GP, CP3, Nash ect...) Both have decent arguments to be in the HoF at some point.

I'd rather Stanley & Reggie have their own numbers but it's not a big deal either way.

The fact that it's viewed as a publicity stunt to draw in fans is sad.

And I believe it's viewed that way partly because other players wear those numbers. If an organisation wanted it to mean something special then they'd make it something special!

If winning employee of the month came with a $1000 cheque people would want it...until you start sharing it to less deserving people because "it's not fair" to give it to your best employee every month!

The minute you compromise on it I believe it's worthless

The way I look at it, the jerseys are lifted to the rafters in honor of the player. No need for the number to be out of commission. I don't even pay attention to the numbers anyway though. I have no idea who is what number.

It just seems so arbitrary. I mean why don't we retire hairstyles? Oh, we had a great player who combed his hair like that so you can't do that if you play for our team.

The fact that Chuck Daly gets a number up there just goes to show that the actual number doesn't mean a thing. Some teams retire too many numbers, some teams like the Celtics and Lakers have a TON of players deserving of it, and it really limits the options.

Let them wear whatever number they want. Throw up another banner with their name and the same number if they turn into something. I think the only numbers that should be restricted are ones that the league as a whole decides to retire. Which they should really do with 23.
