The Aaron Gordon Thread I: Matrix Reloaded

This just came out, thought it was appropriate.

An all-purpose thread for AG.

What do you guys want him to work on in the off-season besides his shot? What do you see his role being on the team next season?

I hope we start using him more with the ball in his hands like Draymond. He's so good with it on fastbreaks and he's mostly stopped the unneeded dribbling that people had concerns about during his first Summer League.

I see more Kawhi then Matrix but either way we got a hell of a player. I'm expecting 14 8 3 with 1.5 Steals/Blocks next year. Funny tho a lot of AGs Impact doesn't show up in the numbers. Love this kid.

Shawn Marion is arguably a Halof Famer. He is a 15 ppg guy over 1000+ games.
Kawhi Leonard is the best defensive SF of his generation, buy a considerable margin.

What the players have in common is that both are 6'7".

Aaron Gordon is taller than both, but still undersized for a prototype NBA PF. In today's small ball, Gordon could emerge as a competent PF. But right now he is, for me, I would project him as a SF who will develop in to a PF as his athleticism declines.

What is my point? Gordon is nowhere near Marion or Leonard, both of who are elite.

That Gordon/Elf/Hezonja rapport is magic.

His dunks from within a few feet just seem unguardable! Imagine if we taught him how to create those shots himself - or gave him the opportunity to figure it out? Heck, you give him a screen for a PnR and he'll likely finish better than our guards, or get to the line.

He HAS to be more involved in the offense next season.

I could see AG as a Anthony Mason/Blake Griffin/Draymond Green hybrid.

Image]Here's a comparison of AG's sophmore season and Marion's rookie season.( Marion was 21 as a rookie)
Their stats are suprisingly similar.

He's really good at playing off the ball now. Would like to see him with some 1on1 offense next year. Or at least with the opportunity to.

Shooting is really the only thing holding him back. But other than that, I'd like to see him as a playmaker more next year. He has the skills to be a big ballhandler who can run pick n' rolls and make good passes, but I'd like to see him get more reps in the position. The more ballhandlers and people we can have run the offense, the better off we'll be.

yeah but does skiles see that? i hope he releases the reins on AG next season and let him display his whole bag of tricks, he had AG on rails for most of the season.

I honestly don't know. I already have my doubts considering how little the ball was placed in his hands last season. At some point you have to let Gordon grow into his own. Hopefully Skiles fosters that.

And hopefully he doesn't pull him anymore for getting too excited about playing well when we're winning.

YES!

Improving his jump shot is a lazy answer. Just about everyone on this team needs to work on their jump shot.

There are a few areas I started thinking about when I opened this thread but your suggestion stuck with me. If he can become more of a playmaker (both for himself and others), then we have a legit star on this team. With his ferocious defense and elite finishing skills, he doesn't need to create for others like CP3 or himself like a young Iverson. We don't need that much from him. But if he can become strong (not great, but strong) at both of these... wowza!

Unless you want another 30 win season, AG has a lot of work to do before he is ready to "display his whole bag of tricks". He has some handles but they get away from him when he tries to get fancy. There is a lot of potential there but he, like every young player, has a lot of rough edges to clean up.

We have lost enough lately. Some things are better left to be developed in practice than in meaningful games... and I hope Orlando actually plays many meaningful games next season.

AG has a bag of tricks? All I see from him is the ability to jump and dunk. If he can get his 3pt shooting to 40% that would be stellar.

Before the off-season retool, right now I would say the starters for next season are: Payton/Oladipo/Hezonja/Gordon/Vučević .
(Fournier is currently a FA and cannot be know to resign).

There is a lot to like in those five, but even a couple years of playing together, that is not a championship-five for me.

Yes he has a bag but they are not sharp enough yet, but he definitely could be extremely dangerous in the pick and roll as the ball Handler. He handles the ball well enough at this point, he is not a liability in the mid range he can hit that shot and he is a willing passer. Kinda confused why we didn't run that for him or at least try, pick and roll to me would suit AG real well.

That video makes him seem very 1 dimensional. I bet some people think that's all he is capable of.
