Yeah, I think Ignatieff's defeat was more about anti-intellectualism than anti-Americanism.

Anti-intellectualism would be a consistent theme for the Conservatives in government, with their muzzling of scientists, the spending of billions of dollars on "new prisons for unreported crimes", and of course the killing of the long form census, among other things.

Things like facts and knowledge simply don't fit well with right-wing ideology.

I don't really recall the Cons pitching anti-intellectualism attack ads against Ignatieff. In fact, I don't think it was really that big a thing with voters either. Okay, yes, you could say the Cons ran an anti-intellectualism gov't, but they certainly didn't campaign on it. Are you saying voters voted for anti-intellectualism? Sure, some do, but it's not something that wins and loses elections.

I do know the Cons consistently attacked Ignatieff for being barely Canadian. Yes, Ignatieff was also anti-charismatic and a bad political leader--that's a large part of it--but the main thrust of the Cons' campaign against him was that he was more American than Canadian. It's unfortunate that twitter was still in its infancy yet because if it were, I'm sure a lot of the pro-PC tweeters would have hammered Ignatieff hard on that point.

The point is, everyone at some point buys into nationalism when it suits their own personal agenda. Canadians may be "less" patriotic than Americans, but we're no different than anyone else in the world in that we'd wrap ourselves with the Canadian flag when it suits us to make a point.

That's just it isn't it. Mark Jones may seem delusional but likely knows exactly what he's doing. He may look like a clown to us, but simply put, we're not Americans.

Harpers politics were straight from the republican party playbook, so you would think anti americanism would be out of bounds. But that party is run by spin doctors from top to bottom, and there's basically nothing they wont say.

Jack Layton (RIP) was the one who truly ended Ignatieff, greatest debate moment in Canadian politics.

Completely agree with this. These types of messages are career driven. Gotta do what's best for you & the family.

I still think it's strange though. Like others have pointed out, guys like Shulman stick with their roots & do well in their careers.

One thing Americans understand & respect is Patriotism. They believe you should be Patriotic & proud of where you come from. I believe they respect an individual for it.....even if that individual isn't American . Showing anything of the contrary is a sign of weakness.

That's kind of my point. I think Jones can even be respectfully patriotic towards Canada & be respected by the Americans for it. It's when you get in a pissing match things get ugly.

Can we revoke Mark Jones Canadian citizenship?

Post#209 » by mashiach » Sun May 8, 2016 3:51 pm

The man has absolutely no respect for canada and his canadian family whatsoever.

Insults canadian fans of having ''inferiority complex'' after complaining about Wade.

We should really tweet the crap out of espn about his comments.

He doesn't have a Canadian citizenship. Even ACC cared they would boo Wade out the building in game 5

Mark Jones seems immature. I don't get it because his brother is a classy guy.

What a confused person.

Taking so much effort to hide his own roots. Seems like he's the one with the inferiority complex

Yes - he didn't simply work in Canada for a few years. He was born and raised in Canada. The guy must have some serious insecurities over his past as well as particular experiences living in Canada.

Mark Jones was born in Canada, which automatically makes him a Canadian citizen. Did he forcefully relinquish his Canadian citizenship when he got his US citizenship? If not, then he's still technically Canadian.
