Offseason Wishlist: Summer 2016

Post#1 » by Jermainevent » Sat May 7, 2016 8:24 pm

Thought we should have thread dedicated to both Coach and Player Personnel changes.

1) Who is Larry going to hire to lead this ship?

Mike D'Antoni and Jeff Hornacek are the top of my list. I want something exciting on offense, and I believe both can bring that to the mix. Ideally you bring in D'Antoni and Nash as an assistant or special consultant to tutor our new point guard.

2) New Floor General

I alluded to it in point number one, but the Pacers need an actual point guard running the show who can drive and dish, setting up his teammates for easy buckets. Conley, Rubio, Teague and Schröder are at the top of my list. Can you imagine Nash putting Rubio under his wing?

3) Stretch or ball-handling big man

The Pacers have said for years that they want to run and getting a big man who is capable of bringing the ball up the court and initiating the fast break is a must have. Kyle Anderson would be one of my first choices, Good size, handles and passing, perfect four for an uptempo offense. Ryan Anderson fits the bill as a stretch four, but I'm not sure how much it would take cap wise.

4) Resign Mahimi

As long as the price is right, I want Mahimi back in the blue and gold next season. He really showed some stuff in the playoffs, even with a bad back. Plus, he's a consummate professional and does not need a lot of touches to be effective.

5) Move one of Hill, Ellis or Stuckey

I definitely think Hill would net us the most assets of the group. However, with the cap getting ready to explode, his 8 mil per is quite attractive for a player at his level and I am not sure we would get fair value. Ellis' is overpaid based on his performance this year, but maybe a move to a more uptempo style will do him some good. Stuckey just feels like the odd man, move him for the cap space if possible.

I'm sure there are many other things I just haven't thought of yet, like a knock-down shooter from distance. Maybe a defensive specialist, because outside of George and George, not much help on the perimeter defensively. Any Raja Bell's out there?

1. I say we hire Joerger, Hornacek, Blatt, or Messina

2. Sign Mike Conley

3. Sign a combo of Jon Leuer, Lance Thomas, Allen Crabbe, Eric Gordon,

4. Resign Mahinmi, see if Solo will take that 2.3 million for 1 yr

5. Trade Stuckey for more cap space and

And draft BPA.

I don't see bird being unhappy with contracts he negotiated in 2015. Besides, after you see what free agents get this year with the new cap, those deals will look cheap. Remember Jon Contract? Big contracts can get reasonable quickly.

Isn't Paul Millsap a free agent if he wants to be with his player option?

I haven't heard anything of him wanting out, but if Horford leaves and they part ways with either Teague or Schroeder, seems like it might be a time to dip out.

To me, Millsap is one of the most underrated players in the league - can do it all and is a stretch 4 who could go well next to Myles.

No. He signed a new deal where next year is guaranteed. The following year is a player option, though.

1) Who is Larry going to hire to lead this ship?

As of right now my favorite choice is Hornacek. I admire his professionalism and feel he was caught in the middle of an unfortunate situation created by the Twins and management. Guards seem to flourish in his system, which makes me feel good about the prospects of Hill, Monta, Stuckey and possibly Lawson becoming a more cohesive unit that displays crisp ball movement.

2) New Floor General

We should upgrade if possible. The man I would target is Jeff Teague. He might be available because they have Dennis waiting in the wings, and according to some murmurings want him starting next season. I believe ATL would consider GHill specifically because Budenholzer coached him in San Antonio, and both contracts are virtually identical.

3) Stretch or ball-handling big ma
n

While we do need a big I think we should target a physical big to put next to Myles. It is possible Turner fulfills the stretch role offensively as he has the necessary range to be a threat. Terrence Jones intrigues me. He is tough and fast enough to play at a high pace.

4) Resign Mahimi

I want him back too.

5) Move one of Hill, Ellis or Stuckey

I have a feeling there will be movement. As you said, with the cap exploding teams will not hesitate adding SGs. This is supposedly the hardest position to fill as it stands, and with guys like Fournier expected to get north of 15 M, all of the sudden Ellis at 11 M is very good value, especially Hill and Stuckey at 8 & 7 respectively.

Of those three, I'd ideally like to move Stuckey, but acknowledge Ellis would net us more. I really like Hill especially if he can be more of a 1-2 combo

I feel Indy should have a go at Durant. Indy looks like the most attractive team to free agents wanting to win.

I don't think Durant will even consider Indiana.

We need a new floor general and a good big man. If it's possible to have second unit with Ellis and Hill we will have a very dangerous team.

Gosh, we wish. Sure, he and Paul George were playing a TON of one on one during that team USA camp where George fractured his leg, and they really talked a lot about their mutual respect, but while I'm sure we'll make a standard phone call just to check in with his agent, I can't imagine that Durant would come here.

But if he did? Well, that's all we need. I'd imagine Paul George would play some 4 at that point, and Durant would play the 2. We could move Ellis and/or Stuckey for any PF, really.

I doubt it happens, but it's of course worth a call to his agent. The worst that could happen is what we already expect

Indiana could legalize in an effort to lure Durant.

I don't think Indiana's market is as bad as the NBA's propaganda machine would like for you to believe. Outside of a few franchises, all franchises are at a disadvantage.

For all that Indiana provides the NBA, you'd think we've earned a little effing respect.

Mike Conley please. Move George HIll to the bench where he killed it in SA and here.

If we miss on Conley I would love to see Whiteside in a Pacer uniform, assuming Bird wants Turner at the 4.

Either way resign Jan even though his name is spelt Ian.

Hornacek is my #1 choice for coach, but anyone but Mark Jackson or David Blatt will be fine im sure.

Well I see Indy having the most attractive contracts in the NBA. I would've thought it would be an easy sell on the ability of the Pacers to acquire a max player without having to drop anyone of significance. You also have a bunch of low contracts that might be easy to trade away. Most importantly you're a top 3 defensive team that needs a better offense, which is perfect for a big time scorer like Durant.

Regardless if you do or don't land Durant I'd be trying to move Ellis for a more efficient scorer at the SG spot.

1) Who is Larry going to hire to lead this ship?

My pick would be D'antoni. I've been a big fan for a while. It would be contingent upon Dan Burke staying on as defensive co-ordinator, he has been killing it for years.

2) New Floor General

We're not getting Conley. Realistically, I think Teague is obtainable, especially if Horford walks and his poor post-season. Ty Lawson deserves a shot (lel its funny because he's a poor shooter and likes to drink) . Other than those, how about a rookie? Anthony Barber? Demetrius Jackson? Dejounte Murray might slip?

Bird should consider trading down a few spots, because there's a few teams with draft ammo that might look to consolidate (LAC, Boston, Philly, Phoenix). This might make trading for a starting point guard easier.

3) Stretch or ball-handling big man

Stretch. They'd be getting the looks at CJ feasted on early in the season before he got banged up. FAs would include Ilyasova, Teletovic and Anderson, but I'd love to see a trade for Kyle O'Quinn.

4) Resign Mahimi

Definitely, but his contract will looks big when he signs it. He'll get $10m+ per year under the increased cap, possibly more. He's worth it up until $12m per or so IMO.

5) Move one of Hill, Ellis or Stuckey

No thanks. Back court depth is important and these guys need another off-season together. Indy aren't massive attractors of free agents so we'd need to consider keeping what we have, particularly because of the cap rise - the relative values of these contracts increases. This would be up to the new coach though.

It bothers me that a free agent might want more money than PG is getting.

Don't mind me, just banging the drum over here in the corner for ANOTHER offseason for Teletovic....

I wouldn't be disappointed if the Pacers added Conley or Teague--the team's main problem is overall lack of talent--but I think George Hill is pretty underappreciated. Not so sure I wouldn't rather keep him and concentrate on getting a real shooting guard to play next to him instead of a combo guard like they have now.

My hope is that the Pacers add one good guard (of any description) and one dependable big (or two if they lose Mahinmi) before next season starts.

Yeah. I would agree with the guard thing with one caveat; a guard with size (although, you kind of addressed that by saying not a combo guard...).

I struggle with adding a MAX player as well. This is Paul's team, and it needs to stay that way for now...Adding Conley at a MAX deal, at his age is borderline suicide for our future imo.

We need a point guard...YES, but can we get a leader who can handle the rock and facilitate an offense at less than the max? Would Conley take less than Max money to come home? Doubt it, he will have several suitors.

I believe adding Rubio and Teletovic would be a better offensive decision than adding Conley if the finances are similar.
