"Five" on the Whiteside
There seems to be a relative consensus here on DeRozan.
Is there a consensus that the Lakers should give Whiteside the max?
Would that be a good signing for the Lakers?
Give me five (or so) reasons why signing Whiteside to the max would be a wonderful signing and/or five (or so) reasons why it'd be awful.

I dont think it would be wonderful or awful ! I am just not sold yet that he is a player deserving of a max contract ! I do however think it would be great if the Lakers got someone with his interior presence and huge potential upside. So I am up for signing him just dont know about the max

Re: "Five" on the Whiteside
1) We need rim protection -- He can do that.
2) We need some sort of good/great acquisition this summer.
3) He's a piece that could grow with the young core. He's only 26. So 4 years from now, when he's 30/31 and in the middle of his prime, Russell/Randle/Clarkson will all be just entering their prime. Also, The good thing about our core is this: We're going to suck while Golden State/Cleveland/San Antonio are dominant. In 4-5 years when they start to fade away, we could potentially have an up and coming team that can take over.
There's 3 reasons. As far as the bad:
I won't put it into a number as far as reasons, but I worry he's a guy who will get major money and just mail it in, especially if we don't have the type of locker room/organization to keep him in line. But even with all that in Miami, if you watch him, you'll see laziness frequently. He can be so dominant on the boards in stretches, but there's some other times where he just doesn't give a s**t. Those first 2 Raptors games before he got hurt were a good example. For a good portion of the time, he was a monster. Some other times, he just looked completely lethargic.
I also think he's about 5-10 years too late playing in the NBA. In today's NBA, I think the formula on how to win is simple: Surround a big who has playmaking ability with a) long, athletic players that can switch/move/cover defensively and b) shooting. I really don't think you need a guy like Whiteside, especially since he's not a guy you can throw the ball into in the post and let him dominate on the block.
So, while I would be ecstatic if we got him, I really don't think we need him and we'd be probably better off putting our money elsewhere.

Re: "Five" on the Whiteside
If we're serious about winning, this is what we have to do. Why should Durant otherwise leave OKC to come here? With Whiteside here, at least Durant knows there's gonna be high caliber play at C. It gives us a shot. I could see him considering it with Whiteside here, and Russell, and Luke. He is also a good trade piece to possess for A Davis or Drummond proposals down the line if we don't like his mental makeup. Just don't overpay, whatever that means under the new cap.
Durant wants to win. If it's not happening in OKC, why not try LA? Without another game-changer type star player on the roster, like Whiteside, forget it. He's not coming here unless we show we're serious. Durant is our man.

Re: "Five" on the Whiteside
I think Whiteside is overrated and if we give him a max contract, we'll regret it in a few seasons... I'd sign him but he'd be my 3rd signing... He'd be Chris Bosh in our 'big three.'
That said, if we loose out on Durant, LeBron, etc... We probably have to just pay the man.

Re: "Five" on the Whiteside
Also, as far as DeRozan.
I'm really leaning heavily into "Nah" as far as he's concerned -- but I'm not all the way there yet. The Raptors fans are so down on Dwayne Casey as a head coach. I don't watch every game they play because I'm usually working or at the gym when the early (east coast) games are on. There's a couple issues that make me continue to have some sort of faith he'd be good with us.
A) His work ethic is second to none and even approaches Kobe levels. While he may be as a dumb as a board as far as basketball IQ goes, he's a diligent worker and could set a really good example to a guy like Russell in that department.
B) Just how bad is Dwayne Casey? From an outside perspective and watching the Raptors the times that I have, I thought he's done a nice job of setting a foundation there. But, from hearing Raptors fans who watch them a lot more than me, he almost seems like a really good version of Byron Scott. Would a coach like Luke Walton, with a more flowing system, change DeRozan?
C) He showed great improvement this season as far as keeping the ball moving, moving without the ball, even long distance shooting. Watching the playoffs, it seems he's resorted to 3-4 years ago. Is he pressing and trying to put the Raptors on his shoulders because of Kyle Lowry's struggles? Does he know he's not great enough to do that?
So, I'm not completely off the DeRozan bandwagon, but I'm getting close.

No... 1. Overpaid... 2. Won't fit Lukes system (Green)... 3. Lack focus... 4. Injury prone... 5. Locker room headache...

Re: "Five" on the Whiteside
He's getting a max contract wherever he lands.. he may not be worth it, certainly a good argument can be made that it's too much money but this summer he'll get it none the less.xBlackMamba wrote:I dont think it would be wonderful or awful ! I said this in another thread, keep this in mind when you think about what type of contracts you'll see this summer
17 teams have enough money for one max contract and 5 of those have enough for 2 max contacts. Everybody else save Clippers GSW and Cavs have some real money to spend. Basically you have 27 teams with money and most will want to spend it to lock in contracts before the cap jumps again next summer.
Also what we call a max contract this summer, will not be a max contract next summer when the cap gets bumped up again.... We'll probably see quite a few one year deals as FA's try and hold out for 2017

Do you know what 5 teams have enough for 2 max contracts? Who else is rumored to be interested in Whiteside

Lakers, Dallas, Boston, Philly and either Washington or Portland, I forget but it's one of those two and the other one is real close to having two max slotsxBlackMamba wrote:gts1 wrote:He's getting a max contract wherever he lands.. he may not be worth it, certainly a good argument can be made that it's too much money but this summer he'll get it none the less.xBlackMamba wrote:I dont think it would be wonderful or awful ! Re: "Five" on the Whiteside
I'm a pragmatist above all else, I think the Lakers will have to offer Whiteside a max contract. Players only take less when they have no league wide demand, someone will pay Whiteside and it might as well be us because it's extremely doubtful that someone like Lebron or Durant want to play in LA.
And I'd rather it be at least a starting center versus some hot trash like Derozan.

I personally think he should be our #1 FA target, considering we keep the draft pick. Theres no room for durant or george in that case. I think he fills a big void on the team and is a great line of defense with Julius Randle.

Re: "Five" on the Whiteside
Personally I don't see him leaving Miami if they offer him the max... The guy has bounced around for years since being drafted, the Heat took a chance on him and he's grown into the player he has during his stay. He has a fan base there, the team likes him being there... He's found a home in Miami and there had to be a time where he questioned he'd ever fit in anywhere. After what it took for him to get where he is can't see him wanting to begin that all over again, more so now that he's injured...GOTEMCOACH wrote:I personally think he should be our #1 FA target, considering we keep the draft pick. The injury is worrisome for me... The Lakers don't have the margin for error nor the depth to take on a guy who's just injured his knee and it seems to be more than just a mild sprain

Re: "Five" on the Whiteside
He'd be a great acquisition for the simple fact he gives the 2 guards on our team a serious roll man option. He creates spacing due to his ability to finish and roll to the basket well. He's essentially the same player as Deandre Jordan except he doesn't seem like dweeb and plays with an edge.
I don't see how you can be against signing this guy if the chance is there. 23M a year won't be crazy money in a year when the cap jumps AGAIN. Lakers were #1 in shooting out of PnR and 30th in using the roll man. You can trace that back to having Roy Hibbert.

Now that we got a Coach who knows about Analytics
Go hard a Durant. It simple KD 2017 and WB in 2018.
With Ben Simmons = Big guy who can pass and shoot means
for touchs for both KD and WB.
KD would be a 2nd Fiddle in GSW and 2nd or 3rd in San Antonio.
WB wants to come back to LA.
KD wants to play with his buddy WB.
Lakers got the $, coach and assets to make it happen.
Alot will depend on 5/17.
#1 = good future
#2 = Ok future in the near term
#3 just ok future
#4 = Lottery team again.

Re: "Five" on the Whiteside
Whiteside would absolutely be one of the highest priority signings for me. Like someone above said, he plays and acts a lot like Andrew Bynum, and Bynum, without the bum knees was a pretty darn good player for us. Sure, Whiteside has his flaws, but those flaws are exactly why we even have a chance at signing him at all. If he was perfect, Miami would have locked him down on a long term deal already. I get that we all want the perfect franchise player like Durant, but we are in no position to land a guy like that. We can either settle for second tier guys who can come in and help us improve, or we can sit around and play the lottery for the next five years while our youngsters also eat up all our cap space.
