The Orlando Magic have reached a deal in principle with Frank Vogel for Vogel to become the team’s new head coach, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.
The Magic moved quickly in their search to find a replacement for Scott Skiles, who resigned as the team’s coach last week.
Team officials sped up their search because Vogel had received interest from three teams with coaching vacancies — the Memphis Grizzlies, New York Knicks and Houston Rockets— and couldn’t risk one of those teams hiring Vogel.
Vogel, 42, fits the profile Magic officials set for Skiles’ successor: someone who emphasizes the defensive end of the court and someone who relates well to players.
In Vogel’s five full seasons as the Indiana Pacers’ head coach, his teams finished in the top six in field-goal percentage defense every year and in the top 10 in defensive efficiency every year.
Vogel graduated from the University ofKentucky, and he became the Wildcats’ video coordinator after his senior year, thanks in large part to Wildcats assistant coach Jim O’Brien. When Rick Pitino left Kentucky in 1997 to take the Boston Celtics’ head-coaching job, Pitino brought Vogel with him to work as the Celtics’ video coordinator.
When O’Brien succeeded Pitino as the Celtics’ coach, O’Brien elevated Vogel to an assistant-coaching role.
Vogel followed O’Brien and worked as an assistant coach when O’Brien later coached the Philadelphia 76ers and Pacers.
Vogel was promoted to become the Pacers’ interim coach when O’Brien was fired during the 2010-11 season. Vogel guided Indiana to a 20-18 record the rest of the season and was promoted.
Vogel compiled a 250-181 regular-season record and a 31-30 postseason record during his Pacers tenure. But Larry Bird, the Pacers’ president of basketball operations, allowed Vogel’s contract to expire after the recently completed 2015-16 season. Bird had said he wanted the Pacers to score more points and said the Pacers needed a new voice.
The Magic also interviewed Adrian Griffin for their head-coaching job.
Griffin spent the 2015-16 season as Skiles’ top assistant coach.
Griffin’s assistant-coaching contract runs through the 2017-18 season, with a team option for the 2018-19 season.
It is possible that Griffin will remain with the Magic as Vogel’s lead assistant coach, especially since Griffin was a Celtics player when Vogel worked with the Celtics.
But it seems more likely that he will receive extensive interest throughout the league as an associate head coach or as a lead assistant coach. One possibility is the Minnesota Timberwolves, where Tom Thibodeau now runs the basketball operations department and works as the head coach. Griffin used to coach on Thibodeau’s staff when Thibodeau worked for the Chicago Bulls.

Frank Vogel already met with the DeVos family this week. That's always a necessary precursor to putting a deal in place.

UPDATE 5/19 Midnight: ESPN Stein and Broussard...
Sources told ESPN.com on Wednesday night that the Magic believe they have emerged as Vogel's preferred destination and are positioned to quickly complete a deal with him if their coaching search continues to progress in its current direction.
Orlando officials, sources say, have spent the bulk of the week trying to decide between Vogel and highly rated Magic assistant Adrian Griffin but know they have to move quickly if they want Vogel given the strong interest he's received from the Grizzlies.
Vogel, sources say, had already established himself as the Grizzlies' top choice by the time Orlando joined the bidding this week.
Sources say that the Grizzlies have made it clear to Vogel that the Memphis job is his if he chooses, with the promise of a three-year guaranteed deal at a much higher rate than the $2 million annual salary commanded by the recently fired Dave Joerger. But sources say that the Grizzlies are already bracing for the increasingly likely prospect of Vogel choosing to take the Orlando job instead in the wake of last week's unexpected resignation of Scott Skiles after just one season on the Magic's bench.
Sources say Magic management, fond as it of Griffin, is drawn to Vogel's impressive resume and enticed by the idea of moving from on from Skiles' abrupt exit with the opportunity to hire an established coach.

Orlando Magic will reach out to Frank Vogel in coaching search
The Orlando Magic intend to reach out to Frank Vogel during their search for a new head coach, Magic general manager Rob Hennigan told the Orlando Sentinel on Friday.
Vogel, who compiled a 250-181 record during his tenure as the Indiana Pacers' coach, became available when the Pacers decided to let Vogel's contract expire after this season.
It's unclear whether Vogel would be interested in the job. A phone call by the Sentinel on Friday morning to his agent's office was not returned.
Hennigan's acknowledgement that the Magic will contact Vogel shouldn't surprise anyone. Vogel has a reputation as one of the league's best defensive coaches. His teams finished in the top 10 in defensive efficiency in each of his five full seasons as Pacers coach.
