The Vertical: Houston Rockets Summer Agenda

Post#1 » by Mr. E » Sat May 14, 2016 5:11 pm

The Vertical did a piece on the Rockets and what their plan should be for this off-season. The full article is found here:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/summer-agenda--houston-rockets-142211981.html

Some excerpts:

Be diligent in coaching search
The Rockets have had coaching stability the past 25 years. Kevin McHale, Rick Adelman, Jeff Van Gundy and Rudy Tomjanovich each coached Houston for at least four seasons.

Houston needs to find a long-term answer who fits the franchise’s philosophy going forward. Houston must avoid the trap of shuttling coaches every other season.

Know the locker room
There’s more to the NBA than “looking good on paper.” When Dwight Howard joined James Harden in 2013, it certainly looked good on paper.

The most difficult evaluation on a free agent or trade target is not the scouting report or what the numbers show. It is the personality fit that can really make a difference. All-Stars who are headstrong and stubborn often do not mesh with players who are more laidback.

Don’t lose faith in role players
The easy excuse is to blame players not named Harden or Howard for the Rockets failures’.

Corey Brewer, Trevor Ariza and Patrick Beverley certainly took a step back this season, but all three have value. They just need defined roles.

Much more, including a salary breakdown, can be found at the link. I quoted three parts that we have either been discussing, or should be discussing more. Specifically the part about not losing faith in the role players. No matter how poorly people played this past season I still see guys on this bench who could thrive in a better system with a coach like JVG, Vogel, Messina, etc.

Not a Rockets fans obviously, but I'm really interested in your guys summer just because I'm fascinated by what has happened with Houston over the past 2 years. Morey reminds me so much of old Blazer GM Bob Whitsitt, master of the "looks great on paper" roster creation. Morey is more interested in just throwing a bunch of "name" talent together with zero interest in how that talent actually fits together. Contrasting that with the current Blazers is an interesting dynamic as far as how Olshey has brought in practically nothing but unheralded players and focusing almost solely on how they fit a system and with chemistry.

The thing is, though, that the system that Morey has in place did get a team to the WCF before unraveling this past season. The problems with this team this past season were likely at the head coaching level & above.

I do hope that the next Rockets coach will pay more attention to actual chemistry and address issues before they get out of hand like they did in 2015-2016.
