Bryan Colangelo recap from 97.5 interview

Post#1 » by PhilasFinest » Wed May 18, 2016 8:57 pm

Im sure there is going to be a link to the actual interview later so ill update it when it is available.

Figured id post a brief recap of some of the things he talked about in an interview this afternoon on 97.5

He did NOT tip his hand, but went pretty in depth about Simmons' game and strengths, and said that they would have to "do the work" and surround him with adequate shooters. Said he can do so many things with the basketball and his ability to distribute and find the open man is simply a rare characteristic . Viewed him as a "point forward/4" and that he could play some point, but not full time. You'd still like to have a more traditional ball handler out there, but one that doesn't necessarily need to dominate the ball because you'd ideally want Simmons making plays.

He touched on Ingram and said they had met with him in Chicago. a "solid" basketball player and that he's a good shooter which is a premium in the league and sees him as more a prototypical SF. Likes his length which can impact the game. Will have to get stronger. He did seem to talk about Simmons little bit more.

He talked to both players' agents today.

He was also asked about potentially trading one of our bigs, which Mike Miss hypothetically threw out "would you move Okafor to the Lakers for the 2nd pick in the draft?". He kind of dodged the question initially, but then started saying how they actually like a few of the top players in the draft (mentioned Dunn & Murray, who he said he had just watched workout in a gym and that he was a very intriguing prospect that they like) and that there is some obvious redundancy with our roster and that they will certainly be open to any types of moves that would improve the roster in the direction they are trying to go, which is up. Said they had to be a little cautious with making moves because of the uncertainty of Joel's health.

Embiid was talked about in the usual regard. If he can stay healthy, he's going to be a "Monster" and impact player for us. They will continue to be cautious with him and take all the necessary steps to try and insure he is healthy and hopefully can stay that way, but there are some obvious risks involved.

Saric was mentioned, and he said him and Brett are going to Istanbul shortly to meet with Dario. They feel this is a golden time for him to come in and get started with a huge opportunity for playing time as a forward on the team (hinted that he's likely a skilled, versatile stretch 4) Jerami Grant was brought up as his only competition at the PF spot.

Free agency was touched on as well. No specific players, but he was open to the fact that we may not be as attractive as other teams and that "maintaining long term flexibility to potentially add 2-3 high level free agents" is the ultimate goal.

I found it very interesting that he did not mention Nerlens Noel or Okafor at all. Brett did not mention either in the after lottery interview (Embiid/Saric were) and now again, no mention of them.

Im not trying to look into things too deeply, but I find it a little odd they aren't being mentioned. Writing could be on the wall for at least 1 of these guys.

Yup. He also seemed to kinda sneakin his like for Dunn/Murray. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he tried to move 1 of Noel/Okafor for a pick to bring in one of them. He just left a gym watching Murray and he would certainly fit the description he mentioned of the ideal pairing point guard wise with Simmons.

I didn't like the Saric portion. Made it sound like BC's leverage to Sarics people to come over now is playing time, and if he comes over later that playing time may not be there. That scares the hell out of me.

If this guy wants to come over now, that is awesome. If not, fine, and we look forward to seeing you next year then. Financially, it doesn't make sense to come over now. So I'm not interested in getting his camp upset and wanting out before he even gets here.

He said they aren't and said they have a lot of work to do to make a choice.... but I came away with the feeling he liked Simmons a bit more just from the way he talked about him.

AT some point you gotta kind of try to sell him on something. Playing time and a golden opportunity to possibly grab a legitimate spot on the roster and contribute right away is a BIG selling point to a young player IMO. I don't see the issue with it. You can't wait 3-4 years for a player to make a decision and expect them to build around you...especially when your bringing in so many higher draft picks over the course of a few years and have several young bigs in place.

I gotta think we are coming back into this draft with Okafor. Colangelo wants his hands on the makeup of this team and talks about how we need shooters. I'm hoping that means Jamal Murray and not Buddy Hield.

BC definitely loves Simmons. We are taking him and I'm very happy about it.

If BC did something like trade Okafor/26 to PHX for 4/13 he would definitely exceed my current expectations from him. It would show he is much less hurried than perceived by many fans (especially myself). A core of Simmons, Saric, Murray/Dunn, Embiid, and maybe Noel would be amazing. The tidbit on free agency is also music to my ears. Doesn't sound like he wants to blow all our cap space and picks this summer, which is a huge relief.
2025-2026 Philadelphia 76ers:

Maxey/McCain/Lowry
Edgecombe/Grimes/Gordon
George/Oubre/Edwards
Barlow/Watford/Walker
Embiid/Drummond/Bona/Broome

Murray seems like the perfect fit.He can pass and handle the ball but Simmons can pretty much initiate the offense and run things, and Murray can shift and play more off-ball and shoot/score in a sort of Draymond/Curry like way.

I wish we could move Noel instead, and its because of his contract mainly...but I definitely think someones gotta go if were going with Simmons.

Thats a pretty steep price for PHX but id likely do it. Lets not forget PHX has Len, who was a top 5 pick a few years ago and had some moneys this season that he played pretty well. Not so sure they'd be quick to do a deal like that.

Man, that defense would be rough, to say the least, with Murray and Simmons. Offensively it's a damn smoke show tho

I think it will be Jah for Knight and 4. If we really milked it we could maybe get 4, 13, and Knight for Jah 24, and 26.

Maybe Knight would be better honestly. Gives us a player with a few years of experience that can get our other guys involved. Plus, I do remember him saying he doesn't want too many young players on the roster at once because it's difficult to develop them simultaneously.

While I agree, It depends on who else is out there. If you can get the right "3&D" guys at the other 2 spots and slide in a Noel or Embiid at the 5, you've suddenly potentially got something going, especially if they are coached up.

And he may be a great fit with Simmons so that he doesn't have to be a full time PG. Man I would want 13 just to try and get valentine.

I could live with that, but it would surprise me if he did it.

At 4 we take Murray, and at 13 we take Valentine or Jackson.

I still think Okafor is better than that though, but we can be creative with Simmons now.
