Player Pool

General consensus was post merger players with as much significance as possible with the Pistons. Lanier, Bing, and Debusschere were included since they were so iconic and add interest. I also showed bias to recent players! This will hopefully add depth and interest as well. Comments and suggestions needed and welcome regarding additions and deletions. These can be shuffled between positions depending on the number of participants, rules for drafting, and how many players we select per team (5,8,10?). I imagine the more participants, the less players per team.

Definitely an area for discussion. Does the marquee value of their name overshadow what they actually were as Pistons? That was the concern.

I think anyone who played a season with us should be drafteble, as long as the understanding is that you're drafting the version of the player that actually played for us- not the prime version who actually played for someone else.

Personally, I won't be touching any of the mentioned players, but I could see someone wanting to sell AI.

Warspite is very welcome, I just didn't see him explicitly say he was interested. If I'm running it I'd prefer to do just that.

Coleman played 50 minutes as a Piston - that's just a bridge too far. But Iverson, TMac, McAdoo, and Webber I'm open to if the group wants them.

Can we add Jose Calderon and Steve Blake? I need a couple white guys at point guard for my team. John Crotty and Bob Sura will work too.

OK he's drafted and will have to opt out if he doesn't want to.

of course I'm in. I'm already working on a mock draft. The SF again seems to have great value. Even the bigmen seem pretty talented. Who here doesn't think Terry Mills couldnt have been a stretch 4 nightmare playing today?

Curious, using this player pool, what's the weakest starting 5 you could build? (probably mostly guys from the past 7 years I'd assume)

Go!

How about a lineup of

Bynum
Buechler
Daye
Reid
Mokeski

This group loses to today's Sixers by at least forty!

Just to clarify, you ARE playing, right Laimbeer?

If you are, we now have 7 people with Han Solo added to the mix. I think one more would give us the perfect number, not sure I'm comfortable with more than 8 for this draft pool.

Most hated team of all time:

PG: Allen Iverson
SG: Flip Murray (who should be in the pool, btw)
SF: Josh Smith
PF: Charlie Villanueva (nice guy, hated him as a player
C: Christian Laettner

Irony is Laettner might actually be a useful player on the right team and I could even see myself drafting him at some point, I just so personally disliked him when he was here.

And really, Iverson absolutely needs to be in this pool. Sure, he's predominantly known as a non Piston, but you can say the same for guys like Antonio McDyess, Theo Ratliff, heck, even dudes like Adrian Dantley and Mark Aguirre. All of those guys had both longer and far more successful stints with other teams. Heck, Sean Elliott is almost like the SF version of Iverson- never really bought into being here and was gone in a year!

Chris Webber is more of a gray area since he never played anything close to a full season with us (43 games to Iverson's 54, and Iverson was traded to us 2 days into the season). Would I draft him? No. Could I see someone else trying to sell him? Probably. He never really fit in with the group we had in place.

I envision 8 teams with 8 to 10 guys per team. Part of the challenge will be finding bench players with limited abilities who complement the rest of the team. Still unsure whether I'd rather have a high pick or a low pick, but I assume the randomizer will decide that.

If we can't get anyone else can't we just roll with 7?

Probably only pick 8 or 9 guys too so we all have an actual rotation

It's definitely a go with what we have now. More would be nice, but I agree with Snakebites that 8 should probably be the max.
