JJ Redick's podcast with SVG

Post#1 » by orlando1214 » Mon May 23, 2016 3:48 pm

JJ's weekly podcast just went up today and it has SVG on it. I thought some around here might want to listen to it. I'm listening now and there are already some fun behind the scenes Magic stories, but also some fascinating conversation between two smart basketball minds. Their early conversation about defense is really interesting in particular.

Great explanation on what makes a Great Defense by both SVG and JJ in that a great defense is not about having a great individual defensive player, but having a great system with smart team players who buy into that system.

Thus to me that means no Deandre Jordan is going to make this team legit. This team will be defensively legit if they play like a team and buy into a defensive mindset. And, that can happen with Vooch.

For reference, SVG mentioned Charlotte when Steve Clifford became head coach. In his 1st season, they were a top 5 defensive team with Al Jefferson as their starting Center. Well, Al J is slower and worse on defense than Vooch.

Yeah, I couldn't agree more and really enjoyed listening to Stan and JJ explain it. To add on top of what you enlisted, Stan and JJ emphasized that having a defensive guru to come up with proper plan is also essential.

And, that was with Bob McBobberts at PF as well with undersized Kemba!

HOpefully, Vogel can be our Clifford or SVG!

It's not so black and white. You can have the best defensive coach in the world, but give him 5 unathletic poor defenders and the team defense will still suck. You still need the right horses.

It still hurts, but thankfully it's a little bit better now that we have Vogel and not Skiles or Vaughn as the coach. I miss JJ too, I would love to have him on this team.

Just got done listening to the whole thing though, super interesting. I thought it was funny that apparently Hedo was originally going to be the Power Forward and Lewis was going to be the Small Forward. Some great conversations and stories though, highly recommend everyone checking this out.

JJ says about SVG: "I don’t know if I have ever been around a coach before who has held himself so accountable."

I love how Stan goes into having a flexible roster. So fitting for the discussions we've had. Everyone wants to go 4-out, 1-in, but look at what OKC is doing; playing Adams & Kanter together. Look at SAS. Team need to be versatile, now, more than ever.

I think we go with Horford, cause that'll allow us to be flexible. Gordon/Horford/Vuc or SF/Gordon/Horford. With that, we can match up against anyone. Our backcourt has to keep improving their shooting, though.

That versatility is why Nicholson may be kept. He adds to the weapons.

Finally finished. Hard to listen at work when busy. But, I came away with the following thought:

SVG = GOD!

If you had your pick of coaches, I think you'd have to take Pop. But for my money, if I was picking 2nd and Pop was gone, I'm taking Stan. Really enjoyed this podcast. 2 of my absolute favorite people in basketball.
11/18/2017 - I have officially disowned Nikola Vucevic and branded him a loser.

- Skal Labissiere was my guy in 2016 pre-trade. Whoops, but I still believe.
- Malik Monk was my guy in 2017. Whoops(?)
- Mo Bamba was my guy in 2018. TBD.

Gotta appreciate someone who pulls no punches and is totally honest who speaks their mind all while even holding themselves accountable.

I like the part about holding people accountable. "If you don't hold yourself accountable, then it's sort of like blaming people."

Cough, Skiles, cough.

The entire thing was pure gold. Personally, I love the part about how selfless Rashard Lewis was -- the degree of respect he is held in by both SVG and JJ is extremely impressive. Some of the haters on here who bashed his contract and signing for years should be forced to listen to that -- its obvious what a key component he was for that finals team.

When they talked about whether that team was "strong enough" to have someone who had tons of talent but was deficient in other areas did anyone else get the sense they were dancing around talking about Dwight?

Stan name drops JJ, Jameer, Rashard as high character guys, leaves out Dwight.

Also interesting that Stan says, "you don't want a guy in the locker room saying, 'I wanna win a championship.' You want a guy saying I wanna keep JJ off the perimeter, etc..." This, to me, would seem to be a slight knock at Dwight, because that's all he ever says.
