Safe to be in Cleveland as opposing fan?

Post#1 » by peteyjones13 » Thu May 12, 2016 4:52 pm

Hey guys,

I'm a Raps fan from Toronto, and me my wife and I were thinking of coming to Cleveland on Sunday for game 1 if the Raps win game 6 on Friday. Just wondering, do you think fans would treat us ok? I just don't want my wife to be heckled etc..., and want her to have a great experience.

I know that in T.O., vast majority of fans will be respectful, and there might be some playful teasing etc. which is fun, but nothing serious.

What do you guys think our experience would be like? Thanks so much!

I don't think there is anything to worry about in general, its not like you would be walking through a Browns tailgate party wearing a Steelers jersey. Obviously you cant rule out a random obnoxious drunk, but its not like Cavs fans are looking to create problems for other teams fans as far as I have seen.
Now, if you happened to be an obnoxious Heat fan, it may be a different story, but I wouldn't worry if I were you. If you do come, welcome to our city and have some fun. Unlike the general uninformed image of Cleveland, there is plenty to do and see here and the people are pretty friendly.
Edit: I just got in and didn't realize there was a game 7.

As long as you don't put "The Drive/Fumble" on the back of a Miami Heat #6 Jersey in custom UMich colors and make mistake by the lake jokes about our burning river while kicking a bulldog you should be fine...

IMO this is really a stupid question. Sure you might run into some random drunken idiot but overall nobody would even care.

You'll be fine. The only sport you ever had to worry about was football and only if you were wearing a Steeler's jacket. But I think those days are gone with the Browns having been so bad for so long.

In these situations I find that if you are respectful most other people will be too. If the Raptors go on a run and you're doing more than high-fiving your wife or friends and you're instead trying to ruin the fun of others around you by acting arrogant and rubbing stuff in their faces then you're inviting trouble from the equally obnoxious fans around you.

The more you dish out the more you need to expect to take essentially. If you wear your Jersey and are happy but respectful you'll usually have to deal with some trash talk and not much more in most places. But never forget you're on their turf and never underestimate the random drunk.

Whenever I'm in another arena or stadium my friends and I usually end up talking to the fans around us and complimenting them on what we like about their team or city and then we all just cheer without being total jerks.

You'll be fine as a Raptors fan in Cavs territory, however as a human in Cleveland I would suggest to be very careful

As long as you're respectful, nobody should give you any problems. Enjoy the area while you're here. Cleveland gets bashed a lot, but I've been around the country, and I've learned it's not nearly as bad as people portray it. There's a lot of interesting stuff here.

General rule of life, just don't be a dick and you'll be fine.

There are actually quite a few humans in Cleveland.
