Your pitch to Durant

Post#1 » by stan francisco » Tue May 31, 2016 4:18 pm

The city of angles...

What angle would you take with Durant? Post it.

Here's what I would do:

First, tell Durant the Lakers want him to be their next franchise player to lead them to championships in the footsteps of Kobe, Shaq, Magic, Kareem, Logo, Wilt, Mikan. Remind him of the family like atmosphere, how we treat ours (Kobe) better than any organization.

Secondly, tell him that we believe the criticism of he and Westbrook supposedly choking in the WCF was absolutely assanine, that in a system like GSW's and with their surrounding cast, the two of them would be the dynamic western conference duo in the finals against LBJ. That's what we will build around you with Luke — a championship situation. Tell him that I f he signs our offer, we will hands down become the free agent magnet number one in the league next year. Remind him of who could join him at that point. He gets to have a say.

Assure him our conviction that D Russ will undoubtedly be an all-star next season. Show him highlights of his positional defense, his once-in-a-generation vision and passing, and the 39pt game.

Our offer: 1 year @ $30M + 5 year player option at $160 (30, 31, 32, 33, 34). Is that allowed?

And, of course all the usual multimedia mumbo jumbo involved with showtime but focus it around strife for basketball excellence, not stardom and LA tinsel.

no....lol

They can offer a one year contract then re do it next year... they can do a 4 year contract with an ETO on the 4th or a player option in the contract like you mentioned but there can only be one option year in a contract

edit: my mistake, an ETO can only be offered on a 5 year contract, exercised after the 3rd season

So, with the same objective in mind, what would be the closest version of my plan but within the rules of the CBA? Would it basically be a letter of intent?

How about this:

Offer him $36M next season. It's not like we're hurting for cap space. One year, then UFA again, upon which we'd do everything in our power, the kitchen sink, midget cheer leaders, pole dancing goats, to prove ourselves worthy to keep him around. Again, he gets to have a say in whom we add from the 2017 class of FA's.

Signing him early could land us Conley. It could snowball from there w Whiteside taking a slight cut. We'd be contenders if that happened. Hell, why not a one year $40M deal (with tempered expectations for the long term) just to make it so that nobody could blame him for going. He's a guy that cares about what people think of him. Once here and contending, nobody would blame him for staying. Should he decide to go back home to OKC at that point, they'd surely welcome him back.

P Gasol? Noah? Biyombo? Leonard? They'd all be interested in joining him and Luke here in LA.

I think it's time to dead the KD topic. First off LA does not have any access to the resources he'd need to compete vs the 3 teams he'd need compete against to win a ring and after they just went to war and lost to arguably the best team ever Im almost sure he's back in OKC on a 1 year.

Would've thought the plethora of porn stars in sfv would have been enough to keep howard here lol...so considering kd personality, don't see la outside bball influences giving us a leg up like it use to i.e. Shaq with his acting/rapping when we 1st got him. Only way i see him come is if they manage to get kd and another big name fa together at the same time in same meeting and let them discuss with each other what they can do together with this team

I too believe KD may take a one year for several reasons

But He and Westbrook can decide together will they will sign and if
it will be together.

lie and tell him we have got conley and whiteside agreed to sign if he agrees to comes. hope he bites and doesn't check with them and then try to sign conley/whiteside. then he signs and we are like, sucka sucka. outside of this miracle we have no shot.
Warspite:

Prince + filler for Kobe Bryant
To be honest the way Prince has played and with Kobes injury/age/mileage Im not sure I would do that deal either. Still Prince is more important and he wins the head to head battles with Kobe.

I can't for the life of me think of one scenario why he would...

OKC as a team right now is only going to get better next season, they were right there knocking on the finals door... That Thunder team with one more years experience doesn't let the Warriors off the floor... the Spurs are as close to done as they can be, the Warriors aren't going anywhere, they'll be in the hunt but three trips to the finals is hard... next season is unfolding as about as good a chance Durant's going to have to make the finals as he's ever had barring injuries and other unknown factors

As for our selling pitch, you look him right in the eye and say "it's not Oklahoma City"

You really should look at the CBA or read others posts as to what can be offered to free agents (UFA & RFA, length of time in the NBA, etc.). Everything you are proposing is against the rules of the NBA.
