OT - Car Thread

Post#1 » by lilfishi22 » Tue May 31, 2016 7:56 am

Reading LukasBMW's history of car seemed to have sparked a bit of a discussion about cars so I thought I'd create this OT thread to continue.

BTW who watched the new Top Gear?

I am not saying that such an act is a disqualifier (as you said, he is nineteen), but that is extremely dangerous and blatantly reckless. We are not talking about going 90 in the left lane on a 65-mph highway.

I did the same thing in my stepmoms Mazda-Rx8 when I was 19 in most likely a 45 zone. It was like 1am, did this frequently actually.

Same. I was a speed demon in my youth. Still am actually.

My first car was a 1988 325is that I bought for $4,200 (my life savings from busing tables). I ended up dropping in a S52 engine and the thing hauled ass. I did 100+ weekly.

M next car was a 1999 540i I picked up in college for $10k. (my life savings from my eBay business and valet job) Best car ever. I averaged 119 mph on a trip from San Diego to Phoenix (confirmed by the trip calculator. I made it in 4 hours and 20 minutes door to door. (6.5 hours was about average). I could have made even better time if I didn't burn through fuel so fast (had to refuel twice).

My next car was a 2006 SL55 AMG. I again was going from Phoenix to San Diego and was testing the top speed. I found out I had a limiter at 160mph. I passed an Arizona Highway patrol cop on the side of the road a few minutes later doing 140. I still to this day cannot believe that he did not chase me. I think he must have been doing paperwork or something and had his head down.

Then I bought an SL600 with a Renntech tune. Fastest car I've ever owned. It put down 669 RWTQ to the real wheel before breaking a dyno strap and almost jumping off the dyno. I traded it in for a 335i when the warranty on the SL600 was up. As incredible as that car was, NO WAY was I ever owning that car out of warranty. Repairs were insane!

Now I drive a Q50. :( I honestly need to get my ass back in gear and make more money again because I really miss having a special car. I either want to get an E92 M3 manual and put an ESS blower on it, or get into another SL600 or even a CL600 and put software on it.

A 540i for $10K? Sounds like a great deal. Q50 an infiniti right? I've been considering a Q37 for my next car. I'm not nearly the car aficionado you are though.

Well I'm guessing we wouldn't trade the 4th pick for you for sure. I did drive 120 once when I was like 17, but at least it was on the freeway.

I think my top speed was like 135 on the freeway in Arizona. I don't think I'll ever drive that fast again.

Agree 100%. Still the all around best car I've ever owned. Super reliable too with the exception of the cooling system.

Lots of car guys say the e39 was the best car ever made. Easily the best BMW ever made.

Yup Q50 infiniti. Got an insane deal on a lease. $2,500 down and $262 a month + tax for 12,000 miles a year.

A Q37 would be a decent buy. More reliable then a C class or 3 series with similar performance.

I'd look at a Q50 lease over a Q37 purchase though if you would be financing the Q37.

Buy "The Buzz on Leasing" it's a book that talks about the pros of leasing. The biggest pro for me is never owning a car out of warranty. These new cars all have so much electronic stuff on them that you almost HAVE to have a warranty.

I'm leasing my 2015 Toyota Camry, put 3k down and paying $200 a month, but it's only 10k miles a year and I'm already at 20k and still got another year and 8 months left. Need to figure out what I'm doing next as far as transportation goes.

I've been looking at getting the MK2 Audi TT-S for a while now but now I'm sort of cooling off getting a new car. Maybe just go on holidays instead

I think you guys should post pics of these cars and also list specs...I'd certainly be interested to know.

I'd love one of these. Small, relatively nimble, good power and with room for more. I also think it looks fantastic.

200kw power
4wd Quattro
MagRide control

Funny because it looks a lot like the car I was thinking about getting next...(though I would likely go for the 4 door as well...not sure though..might go with 2 door for once)

More of a JDM car guy.

I've had MR2 GT turbo with the 3SGTE engine when I was in uni/college. Loved it, it had a roll cage as the guy I bought it from tracked it. When I bought it, I transplanted a gen 3SGTE into it and sold the older one for cheap.
Then I graduated and got a job, so I bought a 1997 Supra RZ, which I sort of shared with my dad, as he paid half of it lol.

Then I needed more practical cars, so I got a Rav4 for my daily commute.
Then I sold my Supra.... paying insurance for 3 cars and road costs was too much.
Then I got a GF, so I sold my MR2 to buy her an engagement ring.

2 years ago I was torn apart in either buying a WRX STi hatch or a non-turbo coupe, I wanted a car that was economical for daily use. So I ended up getting the Toyota 86, which I still have now.

But its so small, so I'm looking at buying a BMW 328i Wagon, or maybe a Merc C250 Wagon..... or save up some more and maybe in a couple of years a used Merc GLA45... or even a C63 Wagon.... if they drop enough in price. As a daily commute... a bit difficult trying to convince my wife to agree with me on the C63 and the GLA45 though... she thinks its a waste of money for a car that I would never get to drive to its potential... she is probably right, since I dont even drive fast anymore lol.
I'm as boring as my parents are when it comes to driving... strictly according to the speed limits and the one time I attended an Toyota 86 Drive Club here, my car was the only one without modifications lol.

Just got older I suppose.

But in the meanwhile, whilst I look for my next daily commute... I've been eying a weekend project car.... been eying a Skyline GTR R32 1994 V-SPec..... my wife understands my passion for cars and she is aware that these cars are pretty affordable so she isnt against it as much as the C63 and GLA45.

Basically for the same money of a C63 Wagon (used), I can have a daily commute car and a weekend project car and heaps of change left over for a vacation..... so thats my dilemma at the moment

What's the cooling system set you back to fix? Always been wary about older euro cars. I've been lucky with my 05 A3. My friend's '12 Golf Tsi have been to the shop something like 4 times in the past 3 months. She had to have her clutch replaced or fixed. Would've set her back a fair bit if it wasn't for the warranty she still had on it.

Euro cars are still my thing though. Granted I haven't been in any of the newer luxury offerings from the JDM yet.

I definitely looked at the G37 at one point or another. I never really liked the rear styling or the centre console but aside from that, I think you get a lot of car for the money.

I've driven my mate's 370GT, which is essentially the G70 in Nissan clothes. I didn't have an opportunity to chuck it into any corners or anything but the straightline power was there.

That V6 engine is very good.

Not sure why its cousin the 370Z is not very popular in Australia.

It is odd since the sports coupe market isn't exactly saturated and most alternatives are in the upper end of the market (S5, 135i, Cayman). I personally never been in a 370z but my other mate drove me around in the 350z and that was a ton of fun. I probably wouldn't own one though, not a big fan of the style.

Being a JDM guy and owner of a GT86, what's your take on the new MX5? Haven't driven it myself so I can't speak on it's driving dynamics but I think it looks fantastic and the interior is excellent. Pretty solid package overall

Im a fan of the new MX-5's, but its such a shame about the stigmata that goes with owning/driving a Miata here in the states.

I was a JDM guy for a while, had a nice 96 Del Sol that i LOVED. Sold it to my cousin about 5 months ago and picked up a Mazda Protege5. Just dumped a little over a grand completely redoing the suspension. Its a sporty F'n wagon!

Lots of car guys say the e39 was the best car ever made. Easily the best BMW ever made.

VW's.. Let me guess. DSG gearbox? Those things are a trap in the Tsi golf's.
Went to test drive a Golf Tsi the other week with my Old Man as Mum was looking for a new car. Me and my Dad are both massive car fans, and car nuts. Having drove a brand new Golf Tsi with the 7-speed box, we could immediately feel something weird about the gearbox. Maybe it was just that car in particular, but it felt as it the clutch was slipping as it took off from standstill... I dont trust those VW DSG boxes at all..... Unless theyre the 6-speed DSG from the GTi, which is a different box completely and have problems whatsoever
