I'm not off the ledge yet but I'm taking a step back.
That makes sense to me. These rumors do what they are supposed to do, which is generate buzz and make people talk about it. They don't have to be based in anything beyond just talks.
I thought about this a lot last night and on the drive to work this morning.
Covington and Stauskus are non factors. They don't move the needle for me either way. I think that Covington has more value and we could get use out of him, but his inclusion isn't a deal breaker for me.
It makes no sense to me that we would trade for someone like Teague without an extension. If he doesn't extend with us as a condition of the deal then there should be no deal.
However, if he DOES extend with us for a reasonable deal, then I definitely see the benefits. He is a much better player than Noel today, and we have to trade either Noel or Okafor. So this relieves pressure in the front court, while vastly improving our back court. I would hope that we would be getting something else beyond Teague too.
So if this means that we try it out with Okafor then that is a big positive for me. Noel sort of is what he is. I know he is young and can do well in a specific role, but he has shown that he has a very low BB IQ, and doesn't have much capacity to learn. Seeing as we have 3, if not 4(Embiid, Okafor, Simmons, Saric) better players than him in the front court, it isn't like we need him.
The only real issue is whether or not we can get more for him elsewhere.
Teague would improve us tremendously right away, and is a very good, smart point guard, defender, and shooter. People wouldn't have expected us to be able to attract that kind of player via free agency, and so the only real thing would be the opportunity cost of not trading Noel for something else.
I like Noel a lot less than most of the people on this board I think, or I should say, that I have a lot less hope for him improving than most of the board. I would MUCH rather trade him for Teague than trade Okafor for Murray or Dunn.
So while this could easily be much ado about nothing, if it IS true I like it as long as he extends with us right away. If he is a rental then it is a disaster.
