How many big men have been anchors defensively with that those dimensions or smaller?
If your stud big can't anchor you defensively, he basically has to be transcendent offensively to be a super duper star.

Agree. That's why translating to SF and having a jumpshot are two things that will determine how special simmons will be.

Agreed. I also think that if you move him to SF you take away from his rebounding and hurt the tens spacing at the same time. I'd like to see the team try him at center defensively and allow him to run PG offensively. Maybe surround him with 4 guys that can stretch the floor?
He's such a strange prospect to evaluate.

I think he never makes it as a SF. You accept that it best he'll be a positive defender, but not a game changer on that end, and hope his offense develops enough to make him a Blake Griffin level guy, someone who can score, rebound and pass really well. You can do a lot worse from top picks.

We're getting too caught up in the position argument. In todays NBA its all high screen action. So everyone has to guard everyone. Durant and Curry were guarding each other all the time in that WCF.

Length is nice don't get me wrong it definitely makes life easier as a defender.
Jimmy Butler is an awesome defender whose height to wingspan is basically the same.
To me it's more about who has the stones to be a great defender.
It's a motor/character/pride issue.
Simmons length isn't really a concern of mine as much as his intangibles and jumper are.
Defensively he's gotta want it.

Re: What are pros & cons of Simmons' measurements?
I think everyone is glossing over how good his measurements are for someone who is going to be a 3/4 on defense and probably a 1 on offense.
In terms of offense he has elite speed, agility and handle. Now that is in a 6-10 240 pound body that has good jumping ability and excellent length for a ball handler. He is going to be very hard to defend because he will be much, much faster than most SFs (forget about PFs) who are put on him. If teams go small on him he can try to bully them starting at the high or low post and shoot his hook shots or feed open guys for good shots.
On defense he has adequate wingspan and verticality to play PF and would have really strong measurements for a SF. He has the speed, agility and wingspan to bother perimeter players.
So he looks like a guy if adequately motivated can be a great 2-way player.

I can see him playing at 260-270 in his prime. Wide shoulders. He's a 4 for sure and will dominate the ball on the offence similar to LeBron. He looks like he might have better vision and ball control then Lebron at same age to be honest.

Why do you guys think he can't play SF? Is it a defense and/or shooting issue?
If he is quick as advertised, then shouldn't their be no issues on D?
If he plays with a stretch 4 and 5 (let's say both Saric and Embiid can shoot), won't he be able to play 3 with both bigs?
I'd rather have Ingram than a blake griffin light clone.

Think a skinner, non shooting version of Chris Weber. That's what his game is like. he's not a small forward.
Ive only seen him once, watched some youtube clips and read what guys like you have put out there but based on that little bit of information it sounds like he's sortof Lamar Odom if Lamar woke up one day and believed he were a number one option.

Simmons is not a Griffin clone. This doesn't even make sense since Simmons runs the team like a PG unlike Griffin. Simmons is on the perimeter a lot unlike Griffin.

Except that he actually play PF on halfcourt offense. Altho I'm optimistic he can play wing because he is skilled and quick enough.

No he doesn't. He initiates the offense. Griffin doesn't do that. And Simmons' handle is much better than Griffin's.

And Simmons' handle is much better than Griffin's.
It's not 'much better'. It's better. Griffin has amazing handles and ball control, he just doesn't use it enough. He's one of the best ballhandlers in the league 6'8 and over
