The Best Trade Offer Series: Enes Kanter

Post#1 » by sportscrazy » Thu Jun 9, 2016 6:30 pm

The Thunder decide that Enes Kanter is just too much of a defensive liability deep in the playoffs and decide to shop him, what is their best offer?

This is going to be similar to the Rolling Trade Challenge, where we vote after the thread has run on its course on the fairest deal taking into account the Thunder's needs and the other teams involved as well.

The premise of why the Thunder might trade Kanter is incorrect. If Presti thought Kanter's defense was too much of a liability he would have let him go to Portland last summer. Kanter has improved defensively and will likely continue to improve over the next couple of years.

The reason Presti will eventually trade Kanter is the same reason that Presti traded Harden. Even with an increased cap, the core of Durant, Westbrook, Ibaka and Adams will take the majority of the cap space. Kanter is a luxury the team can afford next season, but beyond that they need to make cap space for others. The other reason Presti will trade Kanter is the improved play of Adams.

Because the main issue is upcoming cap space, taking on equal long term salary will not be the what the team is looking for. Presti will be looking for a player and a pick, with a sizable TPE.

Presti isn't going to be adding any core players to sweeten the pot with Kanter. Kanter is a good player and a good person that has his own value. Admittedly Kanter's true value might not be reflected in this thread.

Not sure why not. Their values are about the same IMO. Kaner is a defensive liability, and Beal is always injured.

If Beal ever gets his injury issues worked out, he'll be a top 5 shooting guard in the league. And he fits an ideal that a lot of teams are looking for. Kanter doesn't.

Besides, Gortat is still plenty good.

He is a good player for what he does, but he is a poor player at many things you want your 5 to do. when you add that up with his salary, and OKC's need to save cap space his value is depressed beyond what you may feel.

OKC trades / HOU receives:
Enes Kanter

HOU trades / OKC receives:
Dwight Howard (S&T)

Why this trade works for OKC:
Howard is not the player he once was...but OKC doesn't need him to be. He would serve as a good 3rd option behind Durant and Westbrook. Their new lineup:

PG...Westbrook...Payne
SG...FA...Roberson
SF...Durant...Singler
PF...Ibaka...Collison
C...Howard...Adams

Why this trade works for HOU:
Houston will be losing a starter for nothing once Dwight opts out. By facilitating a sign and trade for Dwight to a contender, they get back a flawed, expensive player who could potentially thrive in Mike D's offense. He would play along side defensive stalwart, Capella, so his defensive deficiencies would be offset. Their new lineup:

PG...Beverley...FA
SG...Harden...FA
SF...Ariza...Brewer
PF...Capella...Beasley
C...Kanter...FA

What do you think?
My Dream Team
PG...Magic Johnson...Steph Curry
SG...Michael Jordan...Kobe Bryant
SF...Larry Bird...Elgin Balyor
PF...Tim Duncan...Hakeem Olajuwon
C...Kareem Abdul-Jabbar...Wilt Chamberlain

And no interest in Dwight, I'd rather Adams at this point in his career.

POR: CLE 2018 2nd, POR 2019 2nd
OKC: Kanter

Why for Portland:
Could use a scoring big, Olshey has a thing for trading two 2nd round picks

Why for OKC:
Gain a couple of assets in a salary dump

Is there a wing equivalent to Kanter in terms of salary and offense vs. defense? I'm having a rough time thinking of an offensive spark-plug wing player that is considered good, but overpaid that would be a good one-for-one deal involving Kanter, I'll do more thinking later on this and try to find a good one.

What kind of wing would need to be brought back to consider the inclusion of Cameron Payne?

Wes Matthews is a similar contract.

I'd prefer something w/ a wing and bench big coming back, if PDX was interested something like Davis/Crabbe. Something like that would be a good return to me.

He's worth a little more than salary dump. You want to talk Ed Davis maybe?
