Re: The Steve Clifford Thread 2.0
I would say that Clifford undervalued Biz and that it was a mistake. I agree that it wasn't that he couldn't figure out how to use him. Biz was effective here when he actually played (I would argue he was by far our best big his last season here). He just didn't value what Biz brought to the table and didn't think we needed his skillset. I think he was 100% wrong and the fact that he valued Spencer Hawes over him is pure insanity, but hey, it is what it is.

Re: The Steve Clifford Thread 2.0
Cliff just had a short interview on the David Glenn show (really don't care for DG). Only interesting thing was that he said in his experience, coaches shouldn't be too involved in draft decisions because they haven't watched many college games and haven't seen the prospects nearly as much. By contrast, he is more involved in FA and trade talks because he has a lot of familiarity with players in the league.

i think he talked about this before... coach clifford is well liked in the league, which is a big plus for the Hornets in the FA...

You got to understand both Cho and Clifford's perspectives are win now, the Batum move, Hawes move all made sense, they need offense... however, giving up your lottery picks so easily is never good...

I would give anything to see you be a part of the Hornets getting out of the 2nd round as well Cliff.
Maybe we get there and LeBron decides he doesn't want to lose in the Finals and we actually advance. We'd then get crushed by the Warriors, but for a few weeks we would be America's team. A man can dream...

That's good Cliff all the way. It does make him easy to like.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Michael's a nuts-and-bolts guy. He believes in work. He believes in team. He believes in guys sacrificing for each other. It makes the whole thing easier. Like the guys sitting out games [to rest], for instance, you should hear him and Patrick with resting players. I mean, like, they didn't do that when they played. And it's just so refreshing for me -- he was saying the other day he never sat out games. He said, "I would never have sat out a game." That's who he is.

I was enjoying the interview until I read this. Its awesome to know that management is on the same page about being bad at managing players health...

Pretty high praise for Clifford, but the personnel valuations in the article seem way off. Our starters are all pretty solid defenders. It's not like Clifford is coaching the Sacramento Kings to be a top 10 defense every year. This year's bench is really going to test Clifford's defensive system if he doesn't stagger the rotations more than he ever has. I would consider every member of our starting five to be an above average defender, but outside of Hibbert (who is a good defender in certain matchups, a liability in others) we don't have anyone on the bench that can be considered passable defensively. It's a serious concern.

Looking closer at the numbers makes me think they'll be better. Last year's 2nd unit D was rated 5th with Hawes/Al and Lin guarding 2's instead of Hibbert and Lamb's length all season. Plus, MKG's return likely means additional minutes for Batum anchoring the 2nd unit.
The NBA's highest rated defensive unit is a possibility, starters or bench. The Hawks, Spurs, LAC and GSW might dip a little this season.

Re: The Steve Clifford Thread 2.0
Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford said he believes his team can be as good as, if not better than, the version last season that won 48 games and was in a four-way tie for the Eastern Conference’s third-best record.
But for all the carry-over players, Clifford sees this as a different team with different challenges.
One of Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford’s challenges this preseason will be compensating for the loss of combo guard Jeremy Lin.
One of Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford’s challenges this preseason will be compensating for the loss of combo guard Jeremy Lin. Chuck Burton AP
"We probably don’t have as many points in our lineup," Clifford said at a media luncheon Tuesday. "We lost a lot of offense, but I think we’ll figure that out. We have potential to be better defensively. We get Mike (Kidd-Gilchrist) back and he’s an elite perimeter defender.
"In studying Roy (Hibbert), it’s just a question of helping him get back to the level he once played at. He’s a basket-protector, but he can also play offense. If he gets anywhere near what he was at Indiana, he gives us a dimension we haven’t had."
Clifford said he knew, entering free agency in July, that it would be impossible to re-sign all five rotation players whose contracts expired. The Hornets retained small forward Nic Batum and power forward Marvin Williams. Jeremy Lin moved to the Brooklyn Nets. Al Jefferson signed with the Indiana Pacers and Courtney Lee signed with the New York Knicks.
Clifford indicated Lin would be the toughest to replace because of his versatility to defend both point guards and shooting guards.
"We were ninth in offense and ninth in defense. We knew we had better offensive personnel. We were one of only four teams to be top-10 in both," Clifford said. "The thing that stood out more than anything was depth.
"When we had two (healthy) rotation players at every position, that’s when we were really good in terms of efficiency of play."
Clifford said general manager Rich Cho and assistant general manager Chad Buchanan did a good job of re-assembling the roster:
"I feel getting Ramon (Sessions) and Roy with the money we had, we did really well."
Other points Clifford discussed Tuesday:
On acquiring veteran Marco Belinelli
"Trading the 22nd pick for Belinelli set up the whole thing in my mind. He’s a legitimate rotation player who can play right now," Clifford said. "You’re just not going to get (a rookie) at 22 who can do that. I know people love the draft, but it’s not going to happen."
On the competition in the East
"The East is a lot better than it was. There are about nine teams saying, ‘We’re good enough to (finish) fourth.’ There’s not a lot of difference between a bunch of us."
On rehabilitating Hibbert’s career
"He’s a natural worker and team-first. He needs a very defined plan: ‘This is what we’ll do with you on offense and this is what we’ll do with you on defense.’ " Clifford said. "One thing I didn’t realize is he’s very good offensive player. He’s not going to be Al, but he can really pass and make good decisions."
On Lin’s departure
"The one thing we’ll lose without Jeremy is a lot of penetration. That’s why he was a good fit for us."
On power forward Frank Kaminsky
"He’s really working at his defensive technique, and that will ultimately determine how good he is. He can score in a lot of different ways. But there are very few guys who are such good scorers that they can play no defense and still become a star.
"Frank, like Marvin, is self-motivated and likes to work. Being good is important to him, and he wants our team to be good, too.”

Coach Clifford admits that the team will be challenged on the offensive end. So why did they trade away one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA? Belinelli was the key to the off-season? He needs to stay out of the trade discussions as much as possible.

Seriously, that was a terrible move. But in his defense, Marco Bellinelli is a more diverse offensive player (though I'd prefer the specialist in Troy Daniels)

Re: The Steve Clifford Thread 2.0
Troy was a deadly shooter, but when we tried involving him more in the offence it highlighted his limitations. Defenders closed out hard and he would try something else which often ended in a turnover. Marco can at least put the ball on the floor

QCH weights in on Clifford's chances at winning Coach of the Year.
Steve Clifford – Charlotte Hornets (7-3)
As noted to begin this article, the Hornets’ early success matches the best in its history. Vegas’s expectations were for slightly more losses than wins. When team leader Al Jefferson and the rejuvinated Jeremy Lin left Charlotte many assumed 10 wins would follow them out the door. However, the seamless reintegration of MKG into the team’s starting rotation and the continued development of Kemba Walker has led to a top 11 offensive rating to go along with a top 5 defensive rating. Clifford’s greatest achievement has been his ability to get his players to play with a team first focus. Under his leadership, Charlotte has developed a culture where salaries, stats, and seniority take a back seat to the greater good and this is leading to wins. As noted in the Hornets Week 4 Preview, the Hornets do not yet posses a marque win, but rate near the top of the NBA in many team statistics. If Charlotte captures a handful of wins against league powers and manages to secure home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, Coach Clifford may take home the hardware for COTY this season.
