Denzel Valentine

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Tue Jun 14, 2016 3:22 pm

A little news bit that I saw this morning in Basketball Insiders:

Word is Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine may have a fairly significant knee issue, so much so that one team sort of compared him to former Indiana Pacers All-Star Danny Granger, who came into the league with a degenerative knee condition and struggled every year to play 82 games. League sources said it’s still likely he will get drafted in the first round, but his stock looks to be a tough one to lock in with so many teams believing his knee will be a problem.

do you have a link? I tried finding the story but no luck! If this is true, he will probably drop to the end of the first round sort of like how Jared Sullinger did back in 2012.

It was buried under the Derrick Rose story http://www.basketballinsiders.com/nba-am-is-derrick-rose-on-his-way-out/

Damn that sucks if true cause he was a nice fall back option for us if the draft doesn't pan out the way we want it to

Looks like he'll be hanging with Caris at the end of the round.

Awe man, that's a bummer. Now he'll probably fall to the Spurs or Warriors, cuz they really need him. I was sold on taking him at 18. In fact I still might not be deterred from taking him still.

Are we sure Basketball Insiders are a trusted source? I've never heard them break any news or any legit source mention them. They only people that mention them are others from their site. Anyone can make a site.

Not saying it's not true, just curious. There is no other mention on the internet unless you go back to December 2015.

I've started reading them more and more. Fresher stories than ESPN. And the injury rumor explains why he is dropping in mock drafts. There must be something behind the rumors. This also doesn't mean his career is over, just means picking him is riskier.

If this is his new range, I'd now jump all over the #18 for #24 & #26 deal with PHI that's been proposed before. Draft Thon Maker and Denzel Washington and we've turned #18 into not one high risk / high reward prospect, but two who both could perfectly fit our roster needs.

Oops! Then again, Denzel's such a versatile actor that I wouldn't bet against him successfully filling the role of a playmaking rookie swing man off our bench!

He did have some knee issues during State so it isn't like this is sort of left field at all.

So he's beginning to look more like a high risk type situation now, minus his inability to play great defense.

If we did draft him, he'd be such a good Meeks replacement for us and then maybe we can ship out one of Bullock and Meeks to give SJ more minutes at the SF position, provided his shooting translates well into the league, which I assume will take upwards of 30+ games for him to adjust to the pace of the NBA like every other rook.

I would only want to draft a SG in the first round, Valentine included, if they were able to contribute immediately and help expedite a trade involving SJ or KCP *if* that's what SVG and Bower have been plotting.
I really don't see a need to draft permanent backup player at 18 unless there are plans to move one of the other two young players with starting capabilities. There's such a logjam at the position that moving Meeks and his contract is just the first of a few steps.

I am quite positive that SVG is not looking to add a 4th SG to this roster. They are pretty much set with KCP/SJ/Bullocks/Meeks. If anything, they would move Meeks to clear room for another PF.

Or maybe the plan is to play SJ at SF exclusively?

Mook would move to the bench, covering most minutes behind Harris & SJ

Meeks ain't gonna be here much longer, Bullock & Hilliard aren't so good you just settle for them as back ups...

Maybe Valentine is the guy our FO thinks can not only play some PG but also play some SG?

Could put him and RJ together or him and KCP or him and Hilliard or him and Bullock

People tend to view each individual as exactly that - an individual talent that teams somehow bend or mold to fit as they develop them

Maybe, just maybe you attempt to bring in guys that already would fit and then work to improve them individually & as a unit?

This. I think the team can get by with Bullock and Hilliard covering backup shooting guard and very spotty small forward minutes, but they can still be improved on.

The only reason I could see us drafting a SG is because KCP & Meeks are free agents although KCP is rfa. HillIiard & Bullock are still question marks.

With us having Jackson/Harris/Dre locked up that is a lot of cap between the the 3. KCP is going to get paid next year.

Idk maybe I'm not that good with the cap but I think it's something to think about.
