The Hawks with all our cap holds and the #21 have 85,625,238 which leaves us with 6,374,762 in cap space. How did you get 14plus million.

We aren't waiving Kirk's cap hold. It can be SnT with a pick for a better backup PG if we decide to go that direction.

We plan on resigning Al, Hump and Bazemore. Now this leaves us at 16 men on the roster (rights included) so someone will have to go. more than likely Patterson since he has a non-guaranteed deal.

It is all laid out on the tab called 2016 Real Space Worksheet

I have the Hawks with $12,024,877.00 in Projected Cap Space. I have it on pretty good authority that they plan to renounce Hinrich to free up as much possible space to make Bazemore an offer. And they also could renounce Humphries too, but they plan to keep his rights and bring him back on the cheap. They have no intention of keeping Hinrich for anything beyond the minimum or leftover cap space.

They'll also waive Patterson if they need to, but the plan is to bring him to camp and let him fight for a roster spot.

I just want to say thanks again to everyone for the incredible interest. Several times today the doc hit max users. Hopefully that didn't keep anyone from getting in and checking it out. If so, keep trying!

You all have no idea what all your kind words, encouragement and interest mean to me. This has been a pet project for years (over a decade now) and the decision share it with the world was both scary and exciting at the same time. That you all have jumped in with such enthusiasm is amazing.

Please continue to share wherever you would like and with whoever you would like. My hope is that this doc can become one of the "go to" resources for the NBA community at large for years to come.

Thanks again!

The NBA combined cap is $2,700,000,000.
The CBA mandates that the each team spend at least 90% of the cap.

So teams like the Lakers and 76ers have to spend at least 90%. My question who is going to get paid if the Lakers $58,059,992 and 76ers $56,256,591 strike out in free agency? Could the Lakers for example give Jordan Clarkson a huge front loaded contract so he gets paid big and the Lakers also have a lot of space to go after the best free agents in 2017? Or do some lucky bench players get rich on 1 year rentals?

Thanks for the answers. I have a somewhat good understanding of the cap, but I'm not informed on how much front loaded contracts are allowed. I like to understand how things work.

Jordan Clarkson is subject to the Gilbert Arenas Provision, so you can't really front-load a contract for him.

One way to use the extra cap space is that you can average out the cap-hit of a back-loaded "poison-pill" contract, though, so that the back-end doesn't hit as hard. But that's only if the Lakers are the ones making the offer, and not the ones matching a signed offer sheet from a competing team.

Even with "front-loaded" contracts, the annual decline in salary is limited to 4.5% (7.5% if you have full bird rights) of the starting year's salary. So you can't have huge year to year salary differences in "front-loaded" contracts anyway.

Thank you. Great information. I understand it now.

Lakers as the franchise with the most cap space is scary, I'm curious to see who they go after this summer.

I just don't see any of the big names coming to the Lakers. They're rebuilding. Maybe a few b-level players. If they're desperate maybe the max at Whiteside. Not expecting much movement.

There should be a RealGM end of the year Awards, and this should be Post of the Year.

Aside from the infamous "Ha Knows" thread on the Portland Forum a number of years ago, this has to be the greatest post ever on RealGM. The time and research involved in this is impressive. Thanks Smitty!!!

Those b level players are what get superstars to eventually come when you have enough of them. Also remember the kwame Brown move was terrible until he was the main piece of the gasol trade. You just never know.

FAQs

Since posting I've been getting a lot of the same questions, so I figured I would post a little FAQ.

Updates
1. Do you plan to keep updating the sheets?

I've been updating them for over a decade now. I have no plans to stop, as it is a key tool for me. I will continue to post the sheets as long as there is interest from the community at large!

Edits
1. Are you going to allow edits to the Google Doc?

At this time I have no intention of that. Mainly due to integrity issues. I have no challenge with copying the data and editing it yourself, but I don't want the public version of the sheet to get messy.

Salary Sheets
1. Why are some things highlighted in yellow?

These are salary items which have some kind of variable. Either the salary number is not official or I haven't been able to track down the exact number yet. In most cases, these will disappear after the cap is set and everything locks in. New contract estimates will also be in yellow until I have the official numbers.

Free Agents Alpha List
1. How do players get on the Free Agents Alpha list?

Every player on the list has either: played in the NBA, played with an NBA team in Summer League, gone to training camp with an NBA team, was mentioned as a prospect for the NBA Draft, or played in the NBA D-League

2. How do players get removed from the Free Agents Alpha list?

I remove a player once he has gone a year without playing professional basketball anywhere. In this case, if a player did not play anywhere in the 2015-2016 season, he has been removed. Exceptions are occasionally made for injured players.

3. Why are some players in green font on the Free Agents Alpha list?

Those players are currently signed to a contract with team outside of the United States.

4. Is the Free Agents Alpha list comprehensive?

Not even close. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of basketball leagues all over the globe. Accounting for every single player isn't something I wish to try to undertake! This list is players who have some relevance to the NBA, either in the recent past or potentially in the future. This is also one of the more time consuming updates to do, so it may all out of date at times. Lots and lots of research time on this one!

I will add to these FAQs as new ones comes up.

Thanks again to everyone for the interest. We've had massive traffic, I've gotten a lot of questions from all over, and to be honest, it has blown me away. It makes me very happy that so many folks are so interested in my work.

If you have any questions, you can hit me up on here. Quoting a post works best so I see it. You can also PM. You can also get me on Twitter at @KeithSmithNBA

Thanks again!

Smitty

Thanks! I'm going to change the title to NBA Salary and Roster Sheets as well, since it is more than just project cap space.

And thanks to all for the interest. Please keep questions and feedback coming!
