aminiaturebuddha,
Yannopoulos seems to agree with us:

"RJ Barrett should be playing for CA U17 Team competing for a gold at the World Championships as it's leader. Who made this decision?"

"Not quite sure I fully understand Team CA decision to keep 2 high school players when we're trying to qualify for the 2016 Olympics?"

Really? Like what? I have been trying to find some Canada BBall gear. Nothing much interesting on their website. Best I can find are cheap knock-off jerseys on eBay made in Chinese sweatshops.

Bought a Canucks jersey once that way...not a good choice. Canada Day is coming up...I need to find some new gear!

Canhoops.ca has some speculation re the 12 or 13 that will be going to Europe.

(mojo, thanks for alerting us to this site).

https://canhoopsca.wordpress.com

Basically says the ones going to Europe are likely:
Bennett
Birch
Kendall
Bhullar
Ejim
Pierre
T. Scrubb

Alexander
Barrett
Heslip
Joseph
Ennis
P. Scrubb

We know that Anthony, Boucher, Brooks and Shi-ttu are not. No mention of Klassen, Hinz, Long, Calliste, or Johnson.

It also says "there is some rekindled talk of possible participation by Nik Stauskas, Kevin Pangos and Tristan Thompson".

Heh...the abuse, I mean "encouragement" Nik is getting on Twitter might be working....

Throw Nik and TT into the mix and we may have something here. A disorganized mess...but maybe a chance. Good to see Pierre in the mix...guy must be logging some serious air miles.

That blogger seems to have some good inside knowledge. I don't know if he broke the Birch/Bennett rumor but he wrote about it in his post. Undefeated alluded to it as well. Hmmm...

Getting TT and/or Stauskas would help a lot.

With TT, we could start him and Bennett, with Birch and Ejim as the primary backups.

With Stauskas, we could try some sets with Ennis, Joseph, and Stauskas in at the same time. Heslip as first off the bench.

This could help cover our weakness at the 3 (not to get too caught up in positions, but Pierre, T. Scrubb, and Ejim all played 4 rather than 3 at college, and I am not sure if I am comfortable with any of them there. We might be better served with a third guard, depending on matchups).

Canhoops' latest blog entry says many are still expecting Barrett to play at the U17s. This makes sense and I hope it is true.

Simplest explaination is he is merely choosing not to participate.

This U17 team is really good. They don't have Simi and RJ yet do they?

Honestly would be great to have a Canada/America final. Can't wait for the actual tournament to start.

Other than wiggins, Barrett is probably the best prospect this country has ever produced. I follow High school ball more than any other level. Montverde Academy is basically gonna be unbeatable for at least the next 2 seasons.

Awesome. Couple questions for you because I'm pretty unfamiliar with HS basketball in the States...

1) Will Simi and Barrett get minutes next year? How deep does Montverde run their rotation? What's the pecking order looking like next year?

2) Do you know if Andrew Nembhard is going to be joining Montverde next year?

3) After say Wiggins and Barrett, who would you say our best prospect has been or is currently? Tristan Thompson?

Murray, hands down. He was the best player on the Pan Am team last year as a high schooler.

Hmmm...not sure if it is hands down.

Depends when/what you are considering best prospect. this is a snapshot in time question. At what point in time are you asking? Early highschool, senior in high school, college prospect? Bennett was selected #1 overall so he by some definition was our best prospect (besides Wiggins). TT was drafted #4 overall - likely higher than Murray. Is that not by some definition a better prospect?

If you look at high school rankings - it is a little tough to compare Murray as he played in Canada and missed out on many ranking - But Kabongo, Tristan, Khem Birch, Bennett, CoJo were all highly ranked prospects and likely higher ranked than Murray.

What was Murray's peak ranking by any major ranking service? The guys above all peaked in the 5-15 range no? Bennett was 5-10. Was Murray ever in that range?

Just saying it is not hands down and pretty subjective.

And he was not the best player on the PanAms last year. He was sloppy, played poor defense and turned the ball over allot. He had some late game hero ball in a couple games and that is all some people seem to remember (but ya - he was still pretty darn good for his age). Nicholson and Bennett were better in the PanAms if I recall correctly.

EDIT: I found a blurb saying that before Murray reclassified to Class of 2015 from Class of 2016 — he was ranked by 247 Sports as the 9th best prospect and Rivals rankeds him at No. 15. So he is right there with the guys above in high school at least. But even if you look at Murray today (post freshman year) Bennett and Thompson were arguable considered better (or somewhat equal) prospects as the same point.

You may need to look further to confirm but this is what I had:
06/20 @ Croatia
06/23 vs Croatia (Jesolo, ITA)
06/25 vs China (Bologna, ITA)
06/26 vs Italy/Philippines (Bologna, ITA)
06/29 vs Puerto Rico (in Italy)
