In Hindsight: Aldridge or Millsap?

Post#1 » by Nolan » Tue Feb 23, 2016 11:07 pm

When free agency began this past summer our entire focus was on LMA and it probably should of been. He was best bigman available and he wanted to come to San Antonio so pursuing him and signing him made tons of sense. But in hindsight would Millsap have been a better addition?

They both signed similar ish contracts as far dollars per year go (LMA got a little more and an extra year), they're the same age and as far PER goes they're almost identical players (Millsap 21.88 PER, Aldridge 21.19) but as far they're games go they're very different players.

LMA is more of an iso player and because of that he hasn't exactly fit in all that well with us at times. But at times he's been able to bail us out of tough situations and carry us at times with those iso abilities. He's also very capable of playing center and over the next few years that's going to mean a lot to us.

As for Millsap he probably would of been the better immediate fit for us (he's familiar with our system from his time with Bud) and his all around offense skill set would of been a serious weapon for us, especially his passing and shooting range. But his lack of size might of held us back on the defensive end and he really isn't able to play center for long stretches.

So in hindsight who would you rather have now and who would of rather have long term? Millsap or LMA.

LMA is a better fit overall and like you said, he can play center if needed. It concerns me how passive he seems to be. I know he's one of the new guys but to help us he needs to be more aggressive offensively which Millsap doesn't seem to have a problem with.

And Millsap reacts so much much quicker when he gets the ball. LMA has this horrible habit of holding the ball for a second or two too long.

Didn't want Millsap. I still feel like Kevin Love is a better fit. He's not an iso player, he can shoot the 3 well, and he'll allow Kawhi to shoot more.. He also operates better from the elbow, which is where our bigs operate a lot from.

I mean, we go to Aldridge a lot to get him going, but Kawhi is just so much more efficient and aggressive. Kawhi should be the guy we go to all the time.

Easily LMA

Millsap is a good player, but his size hurts him in the playoffs. His numbers and his eff% take a massive hit in the playoffs when he is given the key of the offense.
Shaq on Duncan:SA won because of TD, a guy I could never break.I could talk trash to Ewing, get in D-Rob's face, get a rise out of Mourning, but when I went at Tim he’d look at me like he was bored and say:“Hey,Shaq, watch this shot right off the glass.”

Interesting, I thought at least someone would of preferred Millsap. I guess maybe i'm just a little too in love with his game.

Hey this is an interesting question (sorry for bumping.) I think Millsap may (emphasis on may) have helped more this season. But going forward LMA definitely is much more the guy to carry the franchise with Kawhi.

Oh no reason to be sorry my friend.

That's kinda how I feel too. Millsap would of fit in instantly this past season but long term LMA might have a bigger impact.

About 2/3 into the season I was with you on this until Pop finally got LMA to play like LMA and not some bench player. Once he figured out he needs to be a major part of this team for us to win he was great. I think Millsap might have come in with that mentality right away but in the long run I think Aldridge has more talent then Millsap.
