Melky is going to have to have a hot streak and raise his OPS to .750, like it was last year, to earn consideration for a starting spot next year. End of story. All you Melky lovers can savor his grittiness and spunkiness all he wants, but if he doesn't produce like an average centerfielder does, then he has no place on the Yankees.
In Andy Phillips 3-4 years of ML stints, he never provided one hundredth of what Melky provided last season. Comparing the two is foolish. Phillips plays a position where you need to hit well to stick around for a decade, Melky plays a position where you need to field and get on base, and hit .275+ to stick in the majors.
