Jimmy Butler vs Paul George

Post#1 » by PaKii94 » Thu Jun 23, 2016 10:57 pm

From a lot of the posts I have read on this board, people seem to put Paul George a level above Jimmy. This is a misnomer. Last season PG and Jimmy put up very similar stats with Jimmy taking the lead in multiple categories even though Jimmy was injured a good portion of the season. I think people's misguided views are from the beginning of the season where PG always starts off hot and starts in the MVP conversation and then ends up cooling down along with PG being a better shooter

Let's compare p100p basic stats:
Name: PG | JB
Points: 33 | 28
Rebounds: 10 | 7
Assists: 5.8 | 6.5
Steals: 2.7 | 2.2
Blocks: .5 | .9
TOV: 4.7 | 2.7
Fouls: 4.1 | 2.5
2PA: 15.6 | 16.8
2P%: 44.7 | 48.9
3PA: 10 | 4.2
3P%: 37 | 31
FTA: 9.3 | 9.6
FT%: 86 | 83
ORTG: 106 | 116
DRTG: 101 | 106
NRTG: +5 | +10

PG scores about 5 points more and is definitely the better 3 point shooter but Jimmy draws fouls a lot better. Jimmy is also better inside the arc.

PG gets 3 more rebounds but remember he plays PF while Jimmy plays SG they both play different roles for rebounding for their respective teams.

Some people say PG is the better playmaker yet Jimmy averaged more assists than him even though he didn't really start focusing on playmaking until after allstar break.

PG got more steals while Jimmy got more blocks. I would put their defense at similar levels (Jimmy's defense did fall a bit after having to carry more of the offensive load).

PG turned the ball over 75% more and fouled 64% more compared to Jimmy.

PG had a bit better DRTG but he played on a better defensive team (#3) compared to the porous bulls (#15) last year.
Yet Jimmy blows PG out of the water with his ORTG even though both players played on crap team offenses (#23 for bulls, #25 for pacers). Overall net rating, Jimmy doubles PG's.

----

Now lets look into more advanced stats:
Name: PG | JB
PER: 20.9 | 21.3
TS%: 55.7 | 56.2
3PAr: 39 | 20
FTr: 36.4 | 46
TRB%:10.9 | 7.6
AST%: 20.3 | 21.4
STL%: 2.7 | 2.2
BLK%: 0.8 | 1.3
TOV%: 13.6 | 9.6
USG%: 30.4 | 24.4
WS: 9.2 | 9.1
WS/48: .157 | .177
OBPM: 3.5 | 3.6
DBPM: 1.0 | .3
BPM: 4.5 | 4.0

And again we see the same trend. Jimmy has the higher TS% even though PG shot the 3 at a lot higher percentage and a lot higher volume. And this is because Jimmy draws fouls at a much higher rate. TRB% is higher for PG but again, different positions & different bigs between the teams. Jimmy had the higher AST% even though again, he didn't really start being the primary playmaker until post allstar break. Similar trend with STL%/BLK%/TOV%.

PG was literally pretty much the only option of the Pacers but his PER is lower than Jimmy and we know that is a volume/usage biased stat. Jimmy pretty much matched PG's production at a much lower USG%. I find it interesting that Jimmy also nearly matched PG's WS even though Jimmy played 14 less games.

----------

Shooting Splits:

Name: 0-3 | 3-10 | 10-16 | 16-3 | 3
George: 60 | 41.5 | 35 | 40 | 37
Jimmy: 67 | 36 | 36 | 39 | 31

Jimmy is a much better finisher at the rim, PG is a bit better in the 3-10 range, it's a wash for longer midrange to the 3, and then PG is a bit better at the 3.

-------------

The main stat you can use to argue PG is better (and probably the only):

Name: PG | JB
2PAst'd%: 32 | 44
3PAst'd%: 71 | 72

However, PG was truly the #1 option on the Pacers and was their highest USG% player at 30.4%. The next one on the pacers (that played substantial minutes was CJ Miles at 23% and Monta Ellis at 21%

In comparison, Jimmy was ranked #3 in USG% (24.4%) on the bulls behind the horribly inefficient DRose (27.3 USG%), and Pau Gasoft (24.6%) followed by another poor shooting guard in Brooks (22.9%).

If you give Jimmy the green light PG gets, I have no doubt he can exceed PG's current standard. We saw this when Rose was down and Jimmy put up the 27/7/7 statline.

TLDR: It irks me a lot that people put PG on a pedestal and underrate the gem we have in Jimmy :banghead:. You can make the argument that Jimmy and PG are at a similar level RIGHT NOW and with more usage and control, Jimmy does have the potential to be a lot better. We have seen Jimmy manage to up his usage and playmaking/AST% each year he is in the league while keeping his turnovers low at the same level along with relatively maintaining his efficiency. I believe we can expect Jimmy to take another leap next year. he has that dog in him and the work ethic to go with it. People will be sorry they doubted him

I saw someone say it too.

"Butler isn't Paul George"

Um yeah he isn't. He's arguably better. They're both similar players. All stars that can be superstars on a given night.

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

My main problem with George is that he takes so many bad shots.

They're both second tier.

There is no argument that he's easily a better player than Butler though.

Two extremely close players. I've been rooting for Indiana to bottom out now for a while so we could get a chance to pair them.

But it's looking the other way now.

If someone put a gun to my head and asked me to choose while keeping everything else constant, I would go PG these reasons:

-if PG refined his shot selection, he could come closer to matching/exceeding Jimmy's 2PT efficiency but Jimmy is proven to be efficient (even with his midrange chuckings) and you could argue the same thing for a lot more people (Westbrook, JR smith, etc)

-PG is the more natural shooter, but I believe Jimmy has the clutch gene

-and biggest reason: PG doesn't have Jimmy's T-Rex arms. PG's length allows him to be able to play PF in this smaller league while Jimmy is limited to SG/SF. I have always said this but if only Jimmy had slightly longer arms, he would have been a legit MVP caliber player. (stupid Tony Snell and his long wingspan :banghead:. Maybe in the next two years a new revolutionary procedure will be discovered that allows for perfectly done arm grafts and Jimmy can switch them out with Tony's. Then maybe Tony Snell can have some value on this team)

However, the bulls were dealt with Jimmy and I am rolling with him. He is a warrior and I will back him up

Craziest thing is in hindsight indiana could have had both Paul George AND Kawhi Leonard. Some how George Hill has really good value in this league.... he got traded for Kawhi Leonard and then now again for a #12 pick...

Because this is a different discussion. The other threads are about the draft, not jimmy butler.

This season will show just how good Jimmy can be when he is the clear #1 option.

We are going to find out very quickly how good butler really is when he is literally our only option.

I think we overrate everyone who's a bull minus the scrubs, but I don't think that's the issue.

The issue is that we lack vision.

If we want to hold onto Butler then we need a plan asap to get the most out of his prime.

Is that happening, are we building something solid around him? As of now, the answer is absolutely not.

With that said, why not then do your best to acquire young assets, tank and draft high on a loaded '17 draft? Maybe that's the plan at the deadline, but right now we appear to be a team without a vision/plan.

We includes me. I don't overrate him. I don't think he's a #1 option and building around him makes me uneasy.

A lot of you overrate him, though.
