Question about Drummond contract

With cap going up significantly next year is it possible for his agent to go for two year contract second year player option?

It's possible, but I would be stunned if he accepts anything less than the 5-year max. He's not in the elite tier of guys who do those kinds of deals, like LeBron and maybe Durant this summer. Andre will probably have a player option for the last season or maybe even an early termination for the fourth but he's getting the 5-year deal.

Its possible, but I can't see it happening. He really seems to think of the Pistons as his team (not in any selfish way) and seems to work out the financials with his and the Pistons best interests in mind. My money is a 5 year contract with the 5th year being a player option.

I think the shortest deal he can sign is 3 year with a player option in the 3rd.

I think that's only for offer sheets. Restricted free agents re-signing with their own team can have a contract of any length as far as I know.

That's a very dangerous proposition for Dre in particular, because the athleticism he has at his size is what makes him special. An injury, or a series of injuries could potentially derail that and reduce his earnings a lot.

Things are going really well for Dre right now. Just made the all star team & all nba 3rd team, and we finally made the playoffs. He's become a pretty popular player with some pretty decent league-wide recognition. He'll get a 5 year max deal and happily accept it.

This is the primetime to accept a long term deal at his age. You need money to make more money, and at the end of the day, that's all that matters to a lot of these players in this business driven league. Any other age beyond that then I can understand the "win at all costs" angle and get himself a 1+1 but that's not now.

What situation?

The fact that Dre was drafted to a perennial lottery loser, saw SVG come in and in less than 2 calender years turned it into a playoff team?

Or

The fact Dre waited to sign an extension and SVG then went out and got Tobias Harris, King Henry, Benji and has approx $18 mil to spend on free agents?

The ONLY situation anyone will need to contemplate soon is: how do we stop the Pistons?

I wouldn't be shocked if dre got an early opt out, but I would be shocked if it wasn't a 5 year max deal. Just lock in the money and relax about that aspect. Most people can't even wrap their heads around what $120 million is worth. The magic number for the percentage of an investment you can withdraw while never drawing down the principle is about 4-5% per year. That means that if he never works another instant after this contract, he can spend $5 mil every single year for the rest of his life and STILL die with his $120 million in the bank. It's literally like winning the lottery every single year forever. He's got to spend $96,000 per WEEK just in interest or his $120 million will just grow and grow.

About 10 years ago when $120 million was more than it is now, players still blew it all and went into Bankruptcy. Sprewell, Terrel Owens, Antoine Walker etc.

Fortunately, Drummond doesn't appear to be a lavishly spending type of person.

Everything points to Drummond signing a 5 year Max with us as soon as we take care of adding other free agents. That being said, I'm still nervous until he signs.

He could do the one and one, but I'm sure he was uncomfortable waiting until now to sign his extension. Durant could get seriously injured and still get a max, don't think Dre could. He'll take the 5 years and be cool with it.

Not quite. He doesn't get cut a check for $120 million that goes straight into an investment account. It's paid on a per paycheck basis and taxes/agent fees come out. So that's 40% gone, meaning that $24 million/year becomes $14.4 million per year. Now let's say NBA players get a check every two weeks. That's $553,846 per check. Keep 4% and put the remainder into an investment account and you're living off $11K every week. Certainly you can get by on that and obviously as you keep putting money away that 4% grows every year. But it ain't $96,000 a week.

This is a business and he's a team player. Just because he hypothetically wants out doesnt mean he still isnt a professional.

To be clear though I dont believe the Bucher report one bit
