Free Agency: Power Forward Targets

Post#1 » by coordinator0 » Mon Jun 27, 2016 10:19 pm

We have a backup point guard thread so I thought one specifically for power forwards makes sense too, especially with free agency officially opening this week. Here's the list off of Smitty's resource pages:

Spoiler:
Duncan, Tim Unrestricted - Player Option
Gasol, Pau Unrestricted - Player Option

Acy, Quincy Unrestricted
Amundson, Louis Unrestricted
Anderson, Ryan Unrestricted
Arthur, Darrell Unrestricted
Ayres, Jeff Unrestricted
Bass, Brandon Unrestricted
Bonner, Matt Unrestricted
Booker, Trevor Unrestricted
Brand, Elton Unrestricted
Hansbrough, Tyler Unrestricted
Haslem, Udonis Unrestricted
Hickson, J.J. Unrestricted
Hilario, Nene Unrestricted
Humphries, Kris Unrestricted
Lee, David Unrestricted
Leuer, Jon Unrestricted
Nowitzki, Dirk Unrestricted
Robinson, Thomas Unrestricted
Scola, Luis Unrestricted
Smith, Josh Unrestricted
Speights, Marreese Unrestricted
Teletovic, Mirza Unrestricted
Thompson, Jason Unrestricted
Tolliver, Anthony Unrestricted
Villanueva, Charlie Unrestricted
West, David Unrestricted
Williams, Derrick Unrestricted
Williams, Marvin Unrestricted

Jones, Terrence Restricted
Kelly, Ryan Restricted
McAdoo, James Michael Restricted
Moreland, Eric Restricted
Motiejunas, Donatas Restricted
Nicholson, Andrew Restricted
Powell, Dwight Restricted
Reed, Willie Restricted
Sullinger, Jared Restricted
Wood, Christian Restricted

And a quote from Van Gundy a few days ago:

http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nba/pistons/2016/06/24/detroit-pistons-free-agency-plans/86343238/

“We don’t need a lot of people,’’ said Van Gundy. “We don’t have a lot of money compared to what some of these teams have with the new salary cap. We really need two spots. We drafted Henry (Ellenson) last night but we still need a four-man who can at times play the five (center) in these small-ball lineups. We’re really trying to get a guy who can get out and move his feet on the perimeter. That’s not an easy thing, but there are a couple of guys we’d like to go after.

It doesn't seem like they're all that interested in a combo forward type, although that's not a surprise with the guys already on the roster. With that in mind I won't list those on the small forward free agent list because none of them have the versatility to legitimately play center even in small lineups. On the other hand there are a few on the center list so here's that as well:

Spoiler:
Aldrich, Cole Unrestricted
Andersen, Chris Unrestricted
Biyombo, Bismack Unrestricted
Hibbert, Roy Unrestricted
Hill, Jordan Unrestricted
Horford, Al Unrestricted
Howard, Dwight Unrestricted
Jefferson, Al Unrestricted
Kaman, Chris Unrestricted
Mahinmi, Ian Unrestricted
Mohammed, Nazr Unrestricted
Mozgov, Timofey Unrestricted
Noah, Joakim Unrestricted
Pachulia, Zaza Unrestricted
Perkins, Kendrick Unrestricted
Sacre, Robert Unrestricted
Seraphin, Kevin Unrestricted
Sims, Henry Unrestricted
Smith, Jason Unrestricted
Stoudemire, Amar'e Unrestricted
Varejão, Anderson Unrestricted
Whiteside, Hassan Unrestricted

Muscala, Mike Restricted - Team Option
Black, Tarik Restricted
Dedmon, DeWayne Restricted
Drummond, Andre Restricted
Ezeli, Festus Restricted
Leonard, Meyers Restricted
Marjanovic, Boban Restricted
Plumlee, Miles Restricted
Zeller, Tyler Restricted

There are multiple guys who could fit the description Stan outlined. I get the feeling that a mobile big is his primary goal in free agency as well, not point guard like most of us expected/hoped. Aside from Horford, since we already have a thread for him, who's your guess for Detroit's main target(s) or what player the end up signing?

My list boils down to Trevor Booker, Jason Smith, and Jon Leuer for the unrestricted guys. Maybe Derrick Williams too but he's not much of an option to play center in any situation. Yeah, nothing fancy here but the Pistons don't have a lot of caps space to play with like most teams and these seem like the types of guy the front office has targeted under the new regime.

There are some interesting restricted free agent options but if their top priority is a mobile power forward I'm not sure they would want to take that risk. Whether you like them or not Terrence Jones, Donatas Motiejunas, Andrew Nicholson, Dwight Powell, and Meyers Leonard make sense in some capacity.

In the end my prediction is Trevor Booker. He's a guy that can defend/move his feet on the perimeter as a four or small five while bringing the toughness and veteran presence to the team that Van Gundy covets.

Still hoping for Motiejunas even though we have Ellenson. Less than 5% chance but would be nice.

I'm guessing Jason Smith.

I don't think Stan bothers with RFA's unless he strikes out with UFA's - like the plan last season was Danny Green or Demarre Carroll and then when they signed elsewhere quickly RFA Tobias Harris was then going to be targeted until PHX came with the Mook Morris offer. Smith/Leuer make sense and if we strike out there, I think we'd then look at Dwight Powell as the RFA to target as I think D12 goes to Dallas.

Jason Smith would be fine for me.

If we cant get Horford on a 1 and 1 or 4 year deal with PO on option 3 I would go with either Gasol on a 1 and 1 or Speights on a 4 year deal

We’re really trying to get a guy who can get out and move his feet on the perimeter.

"He could also be counted on defensively, holding opponents to 34.9-percent shooting in spot-up situations." - Washington Post on Mirza Teletovic.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fancy-stats/wp/2016/06/27/shoppers-guide-to-this-years-nba-free-agents/

I was not aware he could provide anything at all defensively.

Mirza would be good. I also like Darrell Arthur, he's a great defensive player and can hit the mid-range. Not sure if he has the size to play small ball 5 though.

I think Arthur would be fine for what the Pistons need. He should have been on my list too, good find. Detroit needs a big that can defend on the perimeter. That's what the small lineups are evolving into, like when Cleveland puts Love at center or Golden State puts Green at center. You're not too worried about a size mismatch, just making sure your guy can stick with them somewhat decently. I think the center label might be a bit misleading in this case.

This. We can forget about Donatas unless literally nobody else tries to get him.

Motiejunas has a bad back SVG sent him back and he is his wet dream stretch 5 player.
