He's likely gone. It's no secret the HEAT are going after KD, and Whiteside wants a fat paycheck. He fits in nicely with that young Lakers core out there, and he'll have a fresh new coaching staff with Luke Walton to work with. And then there's the prospect of being a highly-paid starting center for the Los Angeles Lakers...in LOS ANGELES. Money isn't an option for them. Whiteside was practically bagging groceries three years ago. Now he's on the verge of $100 million.
I wouldn't blame him if he skipped town for LA, but unlike LeBron's abrupt departure, it won't blindside this team. Riley has a backup plan in case Whiteside leaves, and it involves Dwight Howard:
https://rjmarc.wordpress.com/2016/05/26/the-kevin-dwight-show/After a frustrating series of stops in Los Angeles and Houston, Dwight Howard is believed to be looking for a fresh start to salvage the remaining years of his career. Pat Riley has made a career out of reclamation projects. He’s worked magic with John Starks, Mourning, P.J. Brown, Ike Austin, Lamar Odom, Chris Andersen, and many more players. You could easily argue that this is taking place right now with Whiteside. You have to think this is something being considered in Riley’s Situation Room.
Cheap blog post plug aside, add him to a potential KD pitch and suddenly you have a terrifying-looking team that doesn't have to sacrifice either Justise Winslow, Josh Richardson, or Tyler Johnson. That team likely makes Luol Deng and Joe Johnson more willing to take a pay cut.
A lineup of Dragic/Wade/Durant/Bosh/Howard brings you to the NBA Finals and beyond.
