While he is likely a lock for the Rockets roster I don't think that anyone is expecting him to be a major factor on the Rockets for a while. He'll likely spend time in McAllen with the Vipers and he may see some call-up time once in a while.
The good thing to consider with that is that the Rockets really do use the Vipers for player development. I've talked to many people who consider the RGV Vipers to be a pipeline into the NBA. Lots of quality players have come through there.
This does just further fuel my desire to see teams allowed to protect more players in their D-League affiliates. I think that they should be able to control the rights to 8 without it impacting the main roster. You'd have to make adjustments when it comes to call-ups; but turn the thing into a true farm system.

Yeah. Morey indicated in a interview that he will probably stay another year in China before coming over for the 2017-2018 season. The Rockets seem to be high on this kid. I think with his height and length plus his skill set he could be a solid player that can the rotation in a couple of years.

Yes, the Rockets have consistently used RGV, the only guy that really avoided it in the last few years was Parsons and that's because he killed it right away.
I also agree that they should change the rules to function more like baseball's 25 and 40 man roster, aka you have a secondary roster of guys under contract but not directly on the NBA team. (they could be stashed or in d league or whatever.) this also gives more sense to dealing with injury situations so you don't have to cut guys just to open roster spot to sign emergency players etc.
As for when he comes over it's up in the air, there's report of buyout after next season but everything i'm hearing in China seem to suggest strong pressure on the Flying Tigers to let him go right away. it depends on if the Rockets think that way too . I think it would be the best for him to come over right away for many reasons (most of which I explained in the article last page.)
