Mock Off-Season: Day 3

Post#1 » by sportscrazy » Fri Jul 1, 2016 3:36 am

Note 1: You guys seem to be grasping your resulting cap space now, so I will note it for myself, but won't write it out until most likely Saturday.
Note 2: This work week and taking on this project has been stressful, so tomorrow after work I will be enjoying some drinks and don't want to drunkenly do the Day 3 Update/Result. Because of this, Day 3 Results will post mid-day Saturday with Day 4 Results posting the usual 11:00 PM ET Saturday night. So Day 3 will be longer, Day 4 will be shorter and Day 5 will be the usual (Sunday at 11:00 PM ET). It would be a great help if you guys could post your current rosters for me, too. Thanks!
Note 3: There is a lot for me to follow so if you notice any mistakes I made then let me know ASAP. Thanks again, guys, you're doing great!

Sorry, one more request.. Can you post any free agent offers that remain unaccepted altogether and carry over from the previous threads into this one?

Posted in the other thread, but I'll repeat here:

My roster ATM:

Schroder
Korver/Hardaway/Bembry
Bazemore/Sefolosha/Prince
Millsap/Arthur
(Horford)/Splitter/Tavares/Muscala

Need to flip Splitter for depth 1-3.

EDIT:

Also--

I offer the Room Exception to DJ Augustin and put in a waiver claim on Andrew Goudelock (he has a minimum salary IIRC,so it doesn't affect cap room).

Also, bump the first year for Baze up to 17mil, which should edge the Nets offer by a hair with 4.5% raises.

Also presuming that Horford hasn't officially signed yet, so I have that little bit of extra salary to play with.

EDIT AGAIN: Forgot Prince and Bembry. Yeah, I'm pretty much good.

Pelicans renounce all remaining cap holds and now have 20.6 million in cap space. Let me know if you want to get creative.

Ok, I'll up the offer to Favors/Hill. (to be clear, I thought my previous offers were quite strong)

To Favors
22
20
20
21.3
-------------
83.3 mil. This is MORE than Favors could possibly get over the same time period if he instead let his contract lapse then signed the maximum possible contract. Let that sink in. AT this point there is very little reason for Favors to decline. He gets more money and more security. Best of both worlds. The only benefit to the Jazz of doing this is to keep his salary more flat and that might help in a couple years when Hayward/Gobert/Exum need paid.

This uses 11 of the Jazz cap space leaving 13,939,249.00

To Hill
20
12
11.1
10.2
------------
53.3 mil

This uses 12 mil of the Jazz cap leaving 1.93 mil in cap room.

As far as I can tell the Jazz could still offer Trey Burke, Shelvin Mack for Tiago Splitter. (Mack's contract is unguaranteed as long as you cut him before 7/7) So, it's essentially the same offer as before, just Burke for Splitter. I'm using the two salaries at 150% as they combine under 9.8 million. (http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q82 -- #82) If this is wrong someone shout it out, I've never been an expert in these sort of things.

From the Jazz perspective this helps balance our roster. Bringing us down to 3 point guards (Hill, Exum, Neto) and opens up a roster slot we can use for one of our 2nd round picks. I think Splitter's San Antonio ties would appeal to Dennis Lindsay making the deal quite plausible.

Roster after trade

Exum, Hill, Neto
Hood, Burks, (Paige)
Hayward, Ingles, (Wallace)
Favors, Lyles, (Bolomboy)
Gobert, Splitter, Withey, Pleiss (likely cut)

So, if you are still game in Atlanta, I am prepared to do Trey Burke, Shelvin Mack for Tiago Splitter.

Cool, lets do this :) Nice working with you. I think Utah and Atlanta do tend to have good relations in real life, so this all seems quite realistic to me.

I may be wrong, but don't extensions just get tacked on on the back end. As far as I'm aware the Nick Collison contract restructure extensions are a thing of the past

Portland Pitch #5

Neil Olshey, Terry Stotts, Dame & CJ continue to make the rounds... they are starting to think someone has a personal vendetta against Portland... Damn you Portlandia

Olshey makes a follow up call to Kent Bazemore & his agent.

Kent, I know you have been getting a lot of interest from other teams we would like to increase our offer to you to 4 years/77 million. That is a starting salary in 2016 of 18 million with standard (4.5%) raises per year. We'll also add the 4th year being a player option. Unfortunately Al decided to stay in Atlanta, but we still have hope that you will see this offer on how serious Portland is about taking things to the next level.

We hope you choose to come to Portland, let us know if you have any questions.

Portland Pitch #6 & 7

Neil starts moving through the cell phone directory, pulls up another pair of numbers and starts dialing. the first number he dials is the agent for Terrance Jones.

We would like to extend an offer to Terrance, for 3 years / 20 million (6.66 M AAV) with the 3rd year being a player option. We think Terrence is a terrific talent, who's shooting and defense would look good alongside Dame & CJ. We know you had a tough season last year, but we think that a little home cooking might be just what the doctor ordered. Let us know.

The second number Gerald Henderson's Agent.

Hendo, you know we had a great season, and after you got that hip worked out you were a huge asset to the team. We also know that you got tight with Dame and the rest of the crew and we want to keep that going. We would like to bring you back on a 3 year deal worth 8 million per year. We'll make the 3rd year a player option if you desire.

Let us know what you think.

From everything I hear, renegotiating Favors contract is a real possibility. You need to give the guy a raise, you have to do it with cap space, and the guy has to be on a non-rookie 4 year deal. It's quite restrictive on who can get renegotiated, but, I believe Favors for sure, and as far as I can tell Hill are both elidgible.

I find this really hard to believe, even though I see it there. The only recent example I've heard of is Nick Collison but that was under the old CBA, and I thought they got rid of it. why wouldn't teams do this more often, why wouldnt players be asking for it. Just seems off to me.

I may be wrong, but don't extensions just get tacked on on the back end. As far as I'm aware the Nick Collison contract restructure extensions are a thing of the past

This is way OT, but here: http://www.basketballinsiders.com/utah-jazz-should-restructure-derrick-favors-contract/
