I should say that when I said in the past that I thought Turner would be a good signing I thought of him as the sixth man role at both small forward and shooting guard. At this price they have to be looking at him as the starting forward. Or at least I think they are.

I can only assume that after the season during exit interviews Aminu must have agreed that switching from starting small forward to power forward is something he embraces.

it's useful for unbalanced trades, which in Portland's case may be a better route then free agency. Blazers got Robin Lopez and Harkless that way. Of course, they also got TRob

I know that, I was specifically talking about trying to sign FA's outright.

Turner adds a new dimension and a 3rd ball handler which I know a lot of fans have complained about not having in the past. I think he'll be a nice addition even in a starting role. I can see him filling what the team lost in Batum.

Solomon Hill just got 50 million for 4pts and 2rebs. Crazy contracts be flying off the shelf.

I will say I'm going to try and moderate my reaction to the overpay of Turner till I see what else is in store for the off-season. Right now, the combination of the player and the contract seems pretty illogical, but it could look better depending on other moves that are made.

for instance, let Crabbe and Meyers walk, re-sign Harkless (depending on cost), sign Paul Gasol, then trade Plumlee + maybe Vonleh for something 'better'?

and then do like some want and sign Terrance Jones to a small re-hab contract using the room-MLE

Maybe Olshey is hoping next trade deadline there will be a run on "tweener" forwards and he can clean up big time
I never thought I’d lead the NBA in rebounding, but I got a lot of help from my team-mates – they did a lot of missing.

I have zero hope in Portland getting Pau if the Spurs are interested.

I do genuinely like the fit of Turner. I like him more than Parsons (Parsons alone that is), far less injury concerns, "cheaper", better playmaker and I believe a better defender (not 100% on that). I mean, I don't think he makes Portland a hugely better team, but it is an upgrade. Olshey has shown he can still make something out of nothing, so who knows what to expect.

I honestly think I'm more annoyed with the fact that Portland keeps getting blown off by their #1 options and not for a particularly great reason. Monroe last year went to Milwaukee which wasn't a wholly impressive team and now Parsons goes to an aging and injury-plagued Memphis team. Portland has a young impressive team that plays fun basketball with a near superstar player, and they can't even get B-level FA's to sign with max money thrown at them. That's really annoying.

Given that Moz got 16 mil per, Parsons 24 mil per with questionable knees, Fournier 21 mil per and Bazemore likely to get 19-20 mil per is Turner really that bad as a guy that can handle the ball well and plays good D. Yeah maybe we overpaid by 2-3 mil per

well, not that it matters much but on the trades board there are two polls

one is 'who won the deal, Turner or Blazers. Turner leads 41-0

the other is 'What is the worst deal so far: Turner's is getting 62% of the vote

ouch

in other news, will this thread be the first thread in years to hit 100 pages? Can't remember the last thread that did that

I think people's reactions tend to be pretty far off accurate. Last year we were talking about how POR would win maybe 30 games. Point is there are too many variables to know what is a good move or not. Maybe we got lucky by not getting Parsons just as it would seem we got lucky by not getting Monroe before.

Here are the problems:
With CJs extension coming up this was our big chance in free agency. While we've never signed any big free agents, we haven't actually had a ton of opportunities as far as being a good team and actually having capspace goes. There is a lot riding on this one, because this is our core through the Lillard Era. It was the perfect set up for an actual good free agent to come to Portland and we've struck out. Turner is okay. Turner at 17M a year is not Olshey Quality Bargain Contract. Its potentially an albotross that would cost assets to clear. That is important, because it is evident(striking out when we are in as good of a position as we'll ever get to attract an FA) that we aren't actually going to be significantly improving this team barring a trade or draft. For trades, you need all the positive assets you can get...

And my biggest peave... Turner can't hit a 3 and is apparently getting worse at it each year. Do you really need another playmaker when you run Lillard/McCollum/Plumlee?

I said in the other thread that I have lots of trouble believing that rumor. I'm fairly well convinced Stotts wouldn't make that promise, and while I have doubts about Olshey, I don't believe he'd undercut Stotts with that kind of promise

if that promise was made, it's irresonsible

I like the fit, though it is expensive.

We don't have a lot left to upgrade our center position if this is what the FA market is going to look like.

Yeah, I don't think he should start at forward against some of the top tier players, or have to cover PF in that situation. Should never guarantee a player a starting position, gotta let the coach decent the matchup positions.

Olshey: Pau, it's been nice talking with you. What do you think about signing with Portland?
Pau: I think it would be great - in fact...

Pau puts out his hand for Olshey to shake.

Olshey: Great!

Buford and Popovich enter. Pau looks at them. They nod. Pau pulls his hand back.

Olshey: Just go... I understand.

Pau, Buford, and Popovich leave.

I agree that the Blazers overpaid overpaid for Turner. But I feel much better about Turner at $70 mile to play all year and into the playoffs than I do paying Parsons to rehab his 3rd knee surgery.
