BackseatBoss wrote:The NBA really has to do something about these max contracts... I have no idea how, but they need to ensure that players like LeBron, Durant, Steph, Westbrook have a chance to sign much bigger contracts than players like Conley. I freaking love Conley's game, but no way in hell is he worth that money.
It's simple - increase max contracts to 30%, 35% and 40% of the cap instead of the current 25/30/35.
The problem is that higher caps means lower mid and low tier contracts, as the aggregate amount of salaries paid out by the NBA is basically a fixed amount, and only a tiny minority of the players get max contracts (and even less would get those new max contracts). So there's no incentive for 95% of the union members to accept that, it'd mean less money for them.
The NBA would need to give the union something back, likely a larger share of the revenue.

From this point on, no one should be allowed to use the word "underrated" in the same sentence as Mike Conley. Even if he averages 30 PPG, leads Memphis to a title, and brings world peace, but still gets snubbed for the ASG, you just can't say it any more.

The worst contract in free agency. Not one of the worst- the worst. I am shaking my head how Mike Conley- never been a MVP or an All-Star, signed the biggest deal in league history. The Grizzlies have lost their minds. Then they pay an injury prone Parsons 24 M a year. Conley and Parsons- making more money than Thompson, Curry, and Draymond combined (LOL). The Grizzlies will never win a NBA title anyways. A joke organization, since their days in Vancouver. Total lunacy- since they outbid themselves big league. No team would have offered him that money.

I think people are really obsessing over the number, it's a max contract, why does it matter if its the biggest contract of all time? (duh, this is the largest the cap has been by a large margin).
Mike Conley is worth a max contract, he would be a perennial all-star if he was in the east.

But he's not.
And because of that and the fact that he is easily the third best - if not fourth - player on his own team makes a max contract insane.
I have seen people say "bidding against yourself", and that is correct. Memphis decided "damn the torpedoes" and didn't wait to see if anyone ACTUALLY offered a max deal to him and just went ahead and gave it. Very short sighted and foolish especially considering they are also in the midst of a coaching and FO changeover.
The factor that he is somewhat injury prone (not hugely, but at near 30 that is a concern with that level of contract) and obviously was NOT the difference last year in the team still being a playoff caliber team has to bear here as well.

Easily the third? The only player that is better than him is Marc Gasol on his team, and Marc Gasol is older and had a major injury. Conley is why they even made the playoffs, they lost 15/19 of their last games when Conley was injured.
I don't get how you can "argue" that he is the fourth best player on the Grizzlies, that is absurd. Zach Randolph is not better than Mike Conley nor are they even close, scoring more does not equate to being better. Zach Randolph is also 5 years older than Mike Conley. I'm not sure who the 3rd guy is you're thinking of, Matt Barnes; Vince Carter; Tony Allen?
Mike Conley is the most valuable asset that the Grizzlies had, and they needed to secure him. Memphis had to max him out otherwise Conley would have left, regardless if he had been offered the max by anyone else (which he would be, because any team that is looking to build a contending team is going to throw a 4 year max for him).
Just saying, that Spurs org is a pretty good one, and they wanted Mike Conley pretty bad. I know it is easy to look at Conley's boxscore stats and dismiss him, but he is an all around player that plays in a very archaic offense that is the slowest pace in the league in Memphis, he is much better than his stats show. Memphis didn't pay him 150 mill for **** and giggles, it was a very realistic threat that Conley would leave. To argue as if there is no demand for Conley just seems unrealistic to me.

Never knew Mike Conley had a friend/relative on RealGM- but nice meeting you. He would not not be a perennial all-star if he was in the east. He is a good but not a great player. You are the only one that has justified this ridiculous contract. Congrats. Respected people in the NBA on twitter- have no justification for this deal, but you do. Say Hi to Mike Conley for me. Cannot take you seriously. Later.

Mature post, also filled with zero facts.
And you're right, in the East where Isaiah Thomas and Jrue Holiday can become all-stars, Mike Conley is incapable. Greg Popovich, the worst talent valuation, is dead wrong about Mike Conley - because Twitter said so?

Legally change your name to an upcoming FA, get an agent, and hope a team makes a really big mistake.
Can't wait for the press conference. Make sure to give us a heads up here.

there are only a very few players in the league that can afford to simply think about "rings" when they sign deals. rings are the last thing on most player's minds when you are talking about his kind of wealth.
Absolute nonsense. NBA tickets prices haven't really been increasing above inflation prices and there are still plenty of opportunities to get bargains as long as you're not looking for premium seats in contending teams or playoffs (but those have been expensive for many years now). All this additional money comes from the TV deals (and increased sponsorship) - and actually it's only half of that increase in revenue. Teams can pay all these contracts and still improve their financial situation without increasing tickets prices.
unfortunately your analysis is backward looking and obsolete. I am making a well informed prediction about what comes next. you are talking about history. my analysis is about the future. not the past. however, your analysis is a good summation of how things used to work in the nba. and for that the board is appreciative of the history lesson. and in the future if you want a real dialogue with somebody then I would change your Tone and approach. because your harsh approach did not invite me into a healthy dialogue. regards

By your logic- teams should also pay Holiday and Thomas 153 M over 5 years.

No it isnt. Its equivalent percentage wise to a max he would hsve gotten. More money for the league means that for players too. They deserve it and players who would be max contracts on any team sre all getting raises. It isnt a big deal
