It's the max contracts that make this happen. With no cap or maxes, the super elite players would make the majority of this money and the middle class wouldn't make nearly as much. The majority of the NBAPA I'm sure loves it the way it is but the superstars are really the ones missing out.

It's not that simple. A big part of this picture is the fact that the cap increased so much so suddenly (as opposed to gradually). Because of this, teams have more available cap space than they otherwise would have had, and there are only so many players to spend it on. Another part of the equation is owners that are being stupid and impatient.

Well, they're both big factors. I think Godmoney's post was significant because no one has been mentioning it where as everyone is aware of how much more money there is this year.

No because the caps going up another 15-20 mil so everyone will still have cap space. The next year there won't be as many teams with space and it'll be a bit more reasonable. Obviously still some terrible contracts will always be handed out, but I don't think there has ever been another year where cap space was more common

Go get Vucevic, would add some much needed offense, very cap friendly contract, would allow Horford to play most of his time at PF.

Orlando have just brought Ibaka and Biyombo on decent $$. Somethings gotta give there.

The no-max idea is interesting but I think it would end up distorting the market even more.

Just looked at our cap figures and to max Durant, barring trades, we'll have to terminate Amir and Jonas' contracts and renounce Sully and Zeller. I have us at about 66 million between Horford, Bradley, IT, Crowder, Smart, Olynyk, Rozier, Young, Mickey, Hunter, and the 3 first rounders. Cap's at 94, leaves 28-ish for KD.

The only way to mitigate the holds for Sullinger/Zeller and get value for them as assets would be to sign-and-trade them to teams under the cap for rookie-scale players. Noel, Okafor, Mclemore, etc.

Also looks like there are only a handful of guys left worth paying more than the MLE, so if we don't get Durant, I think that's it. Could release Amir and sign Pau Gasol, could throw money at Meyers Leonard.. We'll see. They like Crabbe, who's still out there.

I find it really interesting that Jae, IT, Smart and Olynyk were the ones present at the meeting with KD. Where is Bradley? Is this just a coincidence, or is this like Lebron not mentioning Wiggins in his 'I'm coming home' letter? Are these guys keepers?

Who's gonna open Bradley is getting traded for ... thread?

If we're keeping Jaylen, developing him as a 2/3 and Smart as a 1/2, with Jackson or Rozier playing back-up point minutes, plus maybe some scrap bin vet.. Bradley would be the easiest to deal for a big. We'll see..

We need a garbage man.. Someone to keep the likes of Thompson or Drummond from humping the offensive glass. Whether we get KD or not

Who's out there that would be easily available? Would a Taj Gibson fit? Asik?

I don't really have any concerns about throwing a big offer out there for Butler but I do wonder if we'll run into a situation where there aren't enough basketballs to go around. The big three thing is cool and the Celtics pioneered that, especially in the modern era but who's gonna be upset they're not getting 20 a game? Butler was having difficulty sharing with Rose.

I think one of the issues with OKC as a team is that they have one of the most gifted scorers the league has seen.. And he takes the second most shot attempts many nights.

If I'm being honest, I'd go to war with Durant, Thomas and Horford with guys like Smart, Crowder and Bradley around them. That team has better cohesion, imo. But hey, for fireworks sake, get Butler too

I think I gotta kinda agree, do whatever it takes to get KD but if he'll come without Butler then do that. I've heard Butler's defense has been in decline.
