Trade next year's first rounder?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Fri Jul 1, 2016 5:46 pm

We are getting close to a full roster with young players signed to multiyear contracts. I don't see a lot of value in our first rounder next year. Maybe if we are not getting the free agent we want, maybe we trade for a backup PF. Seems like that would open up the options. Something like a Frank Kamensky for an unprotected first? He can shoot, play backup C as well?

I thought we should trade our first rounder this year. Shrug.

Who knows what our roster will look like as the offseason progresses. We may or may not end up in the position you describe.

How about for Thad Young? I know, I know, that ship has sailed.....

I'd keep the pick for now - it may come in handy around the deadline. Minutes seem mostly set for now, figure out the biggest weakness after 30 games, and go from there......

It is suppose to be a good draft, but I'm expecting our pick to be in the 20s. Obviously it would have to be for a good fit. Although after the Ish signing for only 6M a year, we do have ample cash to get a good backup PF as well. I'm just thinking that a good fit might already be under contract. I guess we'll see what happens the next few days.

Draft class is supposed to be superior to this years. I wouldn't trade it. Rookie contracts are even more valuable with the cap explosion now.

We should've traded this years pick too. Depending on what happens this offseason I could see SVG packaging a couple of our core guys and 2-3 first rounders to make a deal for a star. We don't need our first rounders anymore really.

All teams need their first round picks until the CBA is renegotiated. Rookies are on too good of deals to not want them and the cap is just going to keep going up and up for the next handful of years. Ad revenue from the jersey spots is going to make an impact.

The best way for good teams to stay good is by constantly adding cheap, young talent. I get that the Pistons are in a good place with most of the roster all being 28 or younger, but that's not a reason to abandon the draft.

And for what it's worth this trade market is crap too. I don't think first round picks, especially if you're projecting them to be in the 20s, are enticing anybody to give up their good players with so many teams needing to add salary.

I'm saying to abandon the draft. I'm saying we should shift from drafting to trading. Every blockbuster trade involves 2-3 first rounders. IMO we should wait for that opportunity to arise and spend our picks on a proven allstar than unproven inexperienced rookies that will be taken in the second half of the first round.

I know we are all drinking the koolaide, but I still think if something horrific happened and Drummond missed the season we'll be back in our familiar 7-9th pick territory praying for lotto balls.

There is absolutely no reason to trade our picks. We should be hoarding them. They increase our chance at getting a star, and then resigning that star for relative peanuts as an RFA. Save the rest of the cap room for trades and free agents.

If we really want to trade our pick, let it be for a better pick the following year.

SVG drafts
2014 2nd Dinwiddie
2015 1st SJ
2nd Hilliard
2016 1st Henry
2nd Gbinije
Dinwiddie didn't work but I'll give SVG a pass because it was so soon after his hire and he did not have his scouting team in place. 2015 is still looking very good. 2016 is still totally unknown although looks like it could be good.
Right now, SVG drafting looks pretty good to me.
I would prefer to trust SVG to find us gem in the VERY late first round.

One thing your list doesn't show is that SJ was #8, Henry was #18, and our picks for the next few years are very likely to be in the 20s. I'm not expecting much from the draft the next couple of years.

Sorry, Forgot to say that if Hilliard and Gbinije work out as hoped that is evidence that Stan and his scouting system have a good chance of turning up late first round gems a la San Antonio. Go Pistons.

unless the return is a no brainer, I think we keep it simple until we see what our core looks like with a full season together.
If we look like a top 5 team in the east, then we look at adding win now pieces for future assets.

If we don't look competitive in the playoffs vs. the Cavs (the East standard), it's not time to dump picks for expensive players. That's likely a couple years away if it happens at all.

I thought we were very competitive in all but one game of that series, I don't think it matters anyway, a pick around 20 isn't worth anything in a trade.

In my opinion Boston, Toronto and especially Indiana are all better than us at this point but none of them by a wide margin. Personally I would like to add a veteran shooter at the 2/3 to come off the bench, mostly for playoff purposes with Bullock getting those minutes during the regular season to see what he can do. One full season with this crew to gauge what we have and then make major moves next summer if necessary. I think a year from now we will know how good (or mediocre) this team could be in the future, right now is clearly too soon to make that call, internal growth is basically our only hope.

Pretty sure that's not true. Almost everyone has money now, and again next summer with the additional cap hike, but it's going to stabilize. Rookie contracts are ridiculously cheap and getting cheaper relative to the overall cap, and even a pick around #20 holds significant value. Not enough value to trade by itself for a good player, of course, but a player+pick package can still get a better player, especially if the guy coming in makes significantly more than the guy going out.

I can definitely see a Morris+Ellenson+pick(s) trade for a second tier star type deal happening if Stanley progresses enough to start and Henry shows potential. Probably next off-season if it happens, though.

Lip all it takes is an injury to Dre and we are like the Spurs when David Robison got injured. Given that and the improved status of the other teams it's just not worth the gamble.

Besides do you think the roster as constructed, even if full, is enough to actually win anything? Since we aren't going to land a superstar or even second tier superstar in free agency, player development and trades will be the only way. I like the opportunity of a pick better than the tank. Exception would be if acquire the tank with a deal in place to get a pick for Baynes.
