I'd rather have him than not have him. At this stage this team is completely drained of any assets and needs anything they can get. There's hope with Barnes even though he didn't have a great season.

Re. Barnes getting more run in Dallas, just FYI, Barnes started every Warriors game this season (at the three) he wasn't out with ankle injury. He also finished most games as PF in the death lineup. He hasn't come off the bench except for one season, his sophomore year, when Mark Jackson was coach and a newly-signed Iguadala was in the starting lineup.

Iggy is the better player (though his minutes need to be kept down), but Barnes can't create for himself, so Kerr wanted him alongside Steph and Klay instead of trying to be the man with the reserves... and on the other hand Iggy can basically run the reserves as point-forward and set other people up.

I may have mentioned this already, but I am sort of intrigued by a Mavs smallball lineup with Dirk at center and Barnes at PF. Dirk played well at C last season right? That is the way the League is going - big men who can stretch the floor on offense and switch onto smaller perimeter players on defense.

yeah Dallas ran some Dirk/Parsons lineups and they were absolutely killer offensively. Of course they were killer on our defense too. And Dirk has talked about being willing to play center more. Frankly its the only position he has any hope of defending--he just doesn't add any rim protection.

It was one of the reasons I really wanted Dallas to keep Aminu last year with the idea of a Dirk/Aminu/Parsons frontcourt.

Barnes is a better defensive pairing with Dirk obviously and he can't be worse on the glass than Parson was.

I have no doubt we could have easily traded Parsons for Tobias Harris at last season's trade deadline, given the garbage the Magic got in return. Harris at a fraction of Barnes potential cost. But our FO continues to rely and wait on FA pipe dreams no matter how many failures.

His average is a little more than Parsons but I get the impression from GS fans that's always been a good rebounder.

I really hope GSW matches. I don't really even want Matthews for $17 mil; much less Barnes for $24 mil. I really don't understand why our management thinks we can continue to chase super star talent with cap room for only one with 2 average to below average talents tanking up $41+/- million of our cap. We either need to load up on lots of young, cheap talent (anotherwards, tank) or we need to have room for 3-4 big name free agents to team up. No singular talent wants to come to Dallas with Barnes and Matthews being the key pieces.

The Mavs desperately need assets to build a team with, and overpaying guys is not the way to do that. Instead of using the cap to overpay guys, they should use it like Philly to take on overpayed/unwanted guys for assets in return (draft picks and young players). Unfortunately the Mavs have been more focused on giving up assets for short sighted returns, and have basically ignored the draft unlike every other good team out there. And when they do use a draft pick, it is almost always a reactionary move instead of BPA.

I love this team, but I am sick of watching them make the same mistake over and over and over again. Cuban has the money and means to put together one of the best scouting/draft groups out there, but instead it is one big clown show. I honestly don't get that coming from a guy who always wants to be the smartest guy in the room.

I'm unclear on max offers to RFA's... if GSW does not match the offer is Barnes only option to sign with Dallas? Or can he decline Dallas's deal and look for a max (or less) elsewhere and sign with another team? I realize he'd be borderline nuts to turn down a max deal but I'm just curious about how he feels about the prospect of coming to Dallas.

If GS declines to match the offer, then he is a Maverick.

Ok, thank you.

I think both Parsons and Barnes are divisive players but I am reluctantly in the Barnes camp.

Yes but Barnes hasn't signed anything yet... and can't until the moratorium is up in a few days (remember last summer, a certain Clipper had a handshake agreement with a certain team... ;) ).

If Dallas gives an offer sheet to Harrison, Harrison signs it, and GS doesn't match within three days, Barnes is a Mav. Right now it is all theory (in fact, kind of weird that Mavs announced their intentions - what's the benefit there?). But once you have a handshake agreement in place it would be very bad form to renig (obviously IDK how to spell that word).

I was mad when Barnes refused the Warriors offer last summer - if I remember correctly it was $16 mil per. Obviously, since then, inflation. But Barnes is a really smart guy - he could be a Senator some day. I think part of his reasoning was he wanted to be in control of his future, not sign a long term extension only to be traded somewhere he didn't want to be after one season. I can respect that, and hope Barnes ends up in a place of his own choosing.

Right right... this is where the wording is getting me tho. The Mavericks have "extended an offer sheet" to Barnes... an offer which he must sign?

"Dallas extending an offer sheet to Barnes" implies that Dallas and Barnes have reached an agreement not that the Mavs are bidding on a piece of meat. Obviously nothing is signed at this stage as that can only happen on the 7th at midnight. From then onwards GSW have 72h to match or decline to match.
We'll know tomorrow though what will happen when KD makes his decision.

As for the why did the Mavs make their intentions known?
A) to **** with the warriors - this puts pressure on their FO to either cripple their cap for years to come or let Barnes go to the Mavs
B) give us something to talk about and let the market know that Barnes is intent on joining the Mavs.

Actually, I have mentioned perviously. I want Donald Sloan 28 and Dion Waiters 24. Donald Sloan had blown us in his career game with a heavily short-handed roster. He plays like D-Wade with better jumpshots. At 36 mins, his stats intrigue me. He's easily a better PG as well. He's got the same number of assists as Conley. Dion Waiters is young and can guard multiple positions. He's quick in open court with excellent first step to do his damage in the paint. He's not a liability as well. Therefore, I am exceedingly intrigued by the duo.

I heard that the Mavs is actually interested in Donald Sloan. I hope we do get him. It's still time to pry Dion Waiters away. He's currently having the Kings as first option and Sixers as second option. He wants to come back to OKC, though. With Durant likely stays in OKC, I think we should put up an offer that OKC's reluctant to match. Or else, they will lose either Adams, Durant and Westbrook next summer. I still remember RC's high on him. So I think he can convince him to come.

Technically no one has signed anything yet. Of course Mavs fans understand this because of what happened last year.

My guess is mostly B. And maybe not even with the hope that this makes them more attractive to the remaining free agents. Maybe its just an attempt to tell the fans they are doing something.

C- ???
PF- Dirk
SF- Barnes
SG- Matthews
PG- Deron

Gentlemen, that is not a tanking lineup. Damn it. Pray that Westbrook and Cuban are friends and that he'd consider a short drive from Oklahoma to Dallas next summer.

In all probability he is coming to Dallas since Durant is singing with GS. I don't see how they can get both unless Durant signs a league minimum deal.

Return to Dallas Mavericks
