I think this is the players trying to get rid of the max contract. If there is no max, then would Durant leave 40M yearly offer from OKC to play for 25 in Golden State? SuperTeams are showing why max contracts are bad for the league - but the elite players could never make that case to the rank and file of the union because it's the rank and file who would be hurt as there would still be a cap, so more money goes to keep the star and thus less for the rest of the roster. But now the owners will be pushing for this change, and what the owners want the owners get.

I hate the Celtics but at least he'd still have to work for it. This going to GS is a joke. Only reason it's even possible is because of the expanded cap. Durant is a bitch.

If you get rid of max contracts you also have to implement a hard cap. Players don't want the latter but owners do. I'm all for it though.

It's clear we need a hard cap. The 2011 lockout was meant to have a more even playing field. Now, you have a few super teams in a few of the country's most high profile cities and that's it's. Barring injury, if anyone thinks there will be anything other than a GS -Cleveland finals for the next 4-6 you're nuts.

This is now a non-competitive league. Playoffs, seedlings, none of it matters. It's over.

Baseball, hockey and to a degree football are so fun because every year could be "our year". For some reason, teams can put a good year together and make a run. The NBA has never really had that and now it's officially over until the 2020s start.

Michael Jordan i hated. Looking back, he was the exact opposite of today's elite players. Glad i got to watch him.

The NBA is now completely ruined for the next 5 years

Wish all 29 teams would refuse to deal with GS forcing KD to take the lowest $ possible in order to sign

Would be great if every team hung the phone up on them . Sadly it won't happen

One solution is to keep the team salary cap, but remove the cap on players. Teams would then throw crazy money at superstars. If Curry and Durant each got a $50-60m annual contract, there's no way they can be on the same team. The league would have more parity.

Keep the team cap, remove the player cap. If teams can throw crazy money at borderline starters this offseason, just imagine what a franchise player would demand.

I was wondering if teams could do this? Why not? Golden State has no leverage in any of these cap clearing trades now.

Have to believe they had an agreement in place to move a couple guys in the event Durant signed.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

The teams would ALL have to get together and agree not to work with the Warriors, and I'm sure that collusion of that magnitude is against the rules and would not be tolerated.

This is happening. Just accept it.

If that happened Golden State would more than likely cut and stretch both Bogut and Iguodala. Still gives enough room for Durant to get a max.

Durant and Curry are my two favorite players and the Warriors and Thunder were my two favorite non-Piston teams (I've been a Warriors fan for quite some time). Seeing them come together should make me happy? But it hasn't. It smacks of insecurity and front-running, just like when LeBron went to Miami.

I don't know why, but forming a great team through draft and trade is far more respectable than free agency. If the Warriors had traded for Durant, I wouldn't and couldn't be mad, this wouldn't leave me feeling so flat.

I'll be that guy. I like it for a few reasons.

One, I developed a healthy distaste for the Thunder, particularly Westbrook, over the whole Reggie thing. Glad their party is over and Russ got left hanging. Two, I find it kind of fascinating to see this spectacle of such a super team. I know most don't like it, but I am interested to see how dominant they are, or if we're surprised and they're not as good as advertised. Third, it keeps him out of the East in Boston, who would be very formidable with KD and those assets. Last, it helps deny LeBron and the Cavs a repeat.

I know it's happening. and I'm not in denial.

I don't think there'd be a league-wide (minus Warriors) memo sent out saying "OMG GUYZ DON'T TRADE W/ WARRIORS KEVIN DURANT NOOO". Just, unless trades had already taken shape (and there isn't a gentleman's agreement preventing a renege), every team has to know that the Warriors have to move Bogut and whoever else in order to land Durant. If I'm a trade partner, I'm milking the HELL out of that advantage.

I'll call it right now, GS will win fewer regular season games than they did last season.
