Pay.The.Other.Man.Too

Post#1 » by CeCeySay » Tue Jul 5, 2016 5:16 am

I would kill to have 5 TJ's on the floor. Relentless, scrappy hard working NBA players that continue to work on their game. I'll definitely overpay for one on my team in years 3 and 4 of his contract. The amount that he's improved in a couple of years even through mid season injuries (non knee related) hints that he will continue to get better. A big pay day for him isn't gonna stop this dude from working harder to improve. And you know what paying him also does? It shows Richardson and Winslow that we see your hard work, and we're willing to overpay to keep you on this team. Keep the trust. Pay the man.

I love TJ but that poison pill contract makes zero sense building for the future. TJ is not a proper PG, he's a combo guard. And we have J-Rich developing as a two guard as well. Signing TJ would only make sense if he was a possible long term commitment at PG but he isn't, because there's just no creativity between a lineup of TJ, J-Rich and Justise.

I really like TJ but I can see both sides of the argument.

Pro match :

He's young, 2 way player, great shooter (which we need), won't hurt cap space in next 2 years, will make around 6th man size money in 3rd and 4th years, Heat personality.

Anti Match :

We have Rich and Dragon here, we might need a lot of cap space in those 3rd and 4th years, He's not a typical PG or SG, He might not live up to the later years of contract.

I kinda want us to match and hope for the best, but if Pat decides to let go, I can't get mad. You have to think long term and be rational. I'll be disappointed though.

I think your pros outweigh the con/anti.
He was already our 6th or 7th best player last year (not including Bosh who was lost for the second half again and whose future is uncertain.)
With the cap going up even more next off-season, his salary won't kill us even if we keep him for 3rd and 4th year.

If both JRich and TJ blossom, that's a good problem to have in 2-3 years. Always good to have more chips.
I think his contract is Heat-friendly in short term (first two years at less than 6M per) and a trade asset in long term.

Think of all these players who are signing crazy deals right now and next year. Many will not work out for their team and
will be on the trading block in next 2-3 years. We all know that Riley loves reclamation projects. A 40% 3-point shooting feisty guard who makes under 20M per will be an attractive asset.

dragon is good trade bait this season or next on his deal. i'd be surprised if dragic finishes his career in miami.

tj growth potential is very big, if he wasnt injured he would have been an elite 3(>40%) and d player who can get to the rim. and he is a miami heat mentality guy, hard worker, pat riley kind of guy.

If Miami pays TJ, then Miami may possibly be unable to pay Winslow or Richardson down the road.

By the time TJ is making his $15mil per year, he may not be worth that much to trade away. There are plenty of scrappy undersized SG's in the league. But, players like elite 3 point shooting Josh Richardson and defensive specialists like Winslow are harder to find.

No way. I'd be ok if it was spread evenly but those cap hits are going to be just stupid. Y'all complain about Bosh but want to give TJ almost $20 million??

What if Wade doesn't have such a healthy season and doesn't get to come close to the 74 games like last year. Are we supposed to start searching for cheap alternatives to be a role player and a spot starter when we have one already. From reading most of the comments this past year (especially the second half), I don't think the majority would feel comfortable having Gerald Green being that guy.

We have bird rights for Justise and Josh. TJ's salary is only 18M in what is likely to be a cap space of $110M plus.

$5.6M of $94.4M (5.9%)
$6.1M of $110M (5.5%)
$18.6M of $110M (assuming - unlikely - that it does not grow) (16.9%)
$19.6M of $110M (assuming - unlikely - that it does not grow) (17.8%)

Dwyane Wade:

$25M of $94.4M (26.4%)
$25M of $110M (22.7%)
$25M of $110M (22.7)

For just a 2 year 50 M deal Wade gets $50M of $204.4M or 24.5%. TJ's total over four years is 11.8%

We drafted Justise and Jrich, we have their bird rights so we're able to sign them whatever our cap looks like.

Justise yes. JRich is a second round pick and only because of the structure of the Heat's deal will we have his bird rights. Most second rounders only get minimum contracts and then the only protection is the Arenas provision. As we've seen with TJ, it's not foolproof.
