Cavs' have 20million in Cap space without re-signing JR and Lebron. Shumpert has a 9.7mill salary for 2016-2017.

Once they re-sign Lebron how much money will they have?

Not sure what Lebron's min and max contracts are, but I'd guess anywhere from 17million to negative 8million.

I think the main addition is actually Wade as a second playmaker. With Delly gone, somebody needs to run the offense when LeBron is off. Hopefully Kyrie can become a better playmaker, but I wouldn't go into the season counting on it.

Not just that, but with Wade, LeBron can probably play 25 minutes per game in the regular season.

Okay thanks for clearing that up. So theoretically wade can take $20m and then re-sign jr and lbj using bird right?

Negative. Lebron and JR have cap holds which woud need to be relinquished in order to sign Wade. Bird right (Which Lebron doesn't have) would go bye bye. They HAVE to re-sign Lebron first. HTey could go over the cap to re-sign JR but his caphold is rather large.

I hope Wade resigns and ends his career with the Heat, I like story book endings.
But Wade should do what makes him happy.
He has put in his time and given up money to help out Miami in the past.

Wade should go to Cleveland. His last 3 contract negotiations with Miami have been him getting low-balled until they eventually come to terms which end up being pay-cuts anyway. I would love to get to see him play hero in Cleveland for a year or two and try to slow down the Warriors super dynasty, while reuniting with his brother Lebron, whom he loves playing with.

Wade isn't coming unless he gets a 3 yr. 50mill or thereabouts contract. Lebron can sign first for the minimum for 1 yr., and the Cavs probably only need to get rid of a couple of meaningless small contracts like Sasha Kaun, D. Jones. It would work. I really think it will happen, since D Wade feels disrespected, and Lebron can cash in next year. Let's face it....he doesn't need the $$$ !!!

I think LeBron needs to sign for 17mil to keep his bird rights, IIRC

Can't see Wade leaving South Beach for Cleveland. He is not Lebron in tha way. Also doubt Gabrielle Union would want to move from Miami to Cleveland.

THIS. Thanks Paz for explaining layman's terms of capology 101. I cringe when I see posts about the cap after they've just taken a cursory look at a cap sheet that ESPN may've spit out without taking into account of cap holds, roster charges, dead money, rookie contracts, etc. when speaking about the cap ninjistu CLE would have to undertake to get DWade some cashola. Maybe not the 20mil but damn near close, so, for this exercise, can CLE even get close to getting DWade close to 20mil?

As of now by my best estimation of playing Larry Coons capologist on the most basic level;

CLE roster cap sheet as of 7/5/16 for 2016-2017:
LBJ: 30,300,000 [cap hold]
KLove: 21,165,675
Kyrie: 17,638,063
TT: 15,330,435
Shump: 9,662,921
JR: 9,500,000 [cap hold]
Frye: 7,806,971
Mo: 2,194,500
Dahntay: 1,551,659 [guarantee date sometime in Aug but most likely to be waived]
Sasha: 1,333,420
JJ: 980,431 [cap hold but will also be cap # for 2016-2017 signed vet min contract of 1,551,659]
RJ: 980,431 [cap hold but will also be cap # for 2016-2017 signed vet min contract of 1,551,659]
McCrae: 874,636
Felder: 543,471 [I don't think he holds a cap hold as long as he stays unsigned or what not but his $ is insignificant]

After waiving Dahntay, that adds up to 13 players for 118,310,954 in salary + cap holds. Clearly, no cap space available to be spent as we're 24 mil over the salary cap. OK, so what does Griff have to do?

1) Waive Dahntay

2) Sign LBJ to vet min of 1,551,659 which would be 980,431 cap charge as NBA subsidizes the remaining $$$ for "vet mins". Now the Cavs salary is at 88,991,385

3) Ask JR to take a haircut this year and do a 1+1 starting at 8mil with a "wink wink", we'll get you big next year. CLE at 87,491,385

3) Trade Shump, Mo and Sasha into somebodies cap space, get useless 2nd rounders back to replenish coffers. Add 2 roster charges of 1,086,942 because Cavs under 12 players. CLE at 74,300,544. So after all that, CLE has 19,699,456 in cap space to offer D Wade. Give him 19.5mil or 17milish if they want to keep Mo.

So, now you have a roster lookin, if he takes 17mil/yr

Kyrie/Mo/Felder
Wade/JR/McCrae
LBJ/RJ/JJ
Love
TT/Frye

Then we'd have access to the full MLE of 5milly, offer that to Norris Cole, use vet min for D West and leaves us with 1 roster spot open AND under the tax threshold. It would be insane to pull off on the surface and I'm very doubtful my capology logic is even legal or right.

Ultimately, I think now that Cuban just ponied up his legacy money for Dirk, MIA is either gonna let DWade walk or pony up that extra $$$ he's looking forward and bite the bullet. I just can't see LBJ taking such a huge paycut or JR...But it was fun to dream of the possibility. Obv, everything is easier if DWade just takes the Room Exception and LBJ/JR still get paid. That's simplest route.

They don't have to renounce LeBron or JR's Bird rights if they do something like this

1 - trade shumpert (or Frye + Mo)
2 - sign LeBron to about $9 million (the cap hold goes away and they retain his bird rights for next year)
3 - sign Wade with remaining cap space (ballpark of $9 million) accounting for JR's cap hold of 9.5 million, which means renouncing their trade exceptions
4 - sign JR with bird rights, they can go above the cap hold at this point.

fill out the roster with the room exception and league minimum salaries

An alternative is to keep Shumpert and renounce JR.

I'm guessing the Cavs will have to trade away either Shump or Frye or both for essentially nothing. The cost of dumping players like that is a second round draft pick as evidence by the Bogut trade. They renounce the rights to JR Smith and then sign Wade and go over the cap to sign Lebron. Maybe they can keep one of those 3 I mentioned and still sign Wade.

Or maybe they trade away Love.

1. you traded Mo and put him on the depth chart
2. to use all of cap space to sign a player, you have to renounce the MLE.
3. it's already a remote chance LeBron takes a substantial pay cut. Even if he did it to get Wade, the furthest it makes sense of him to go is to get the same salary as Wade. There's really no good route for Wade to go to Cleveland while making the same money the Heat just offered him.

There is nothing Wade can do to move past LeBron on all time lists, he can move himself up that list, though, by winning a couple more rings. 5x NBA champion with all of his other accomplishments sounds better than 3x NBA champion.

Are sign-trades still possible? A hypothetical sign-trade with Miami (or Milwaukee etc....) for Shump/Wade would take care of two birds with one stone... Not sure how all that could work out but its an interesting possibility.
