Great midrange shooter, problem is he has no conscience and will take everybody out of the offense when shooting it at times. When he's on, it's really hard to stop him. When he's missing, it can be a bit deflating.

He is passable defensively most nights, and can make surprising, game-changing blocks. Other nights he is pretty useless and just doesn't have enough juice to do anything.

A really poor rebounder, good at being rah-rah with the team and rallying the troops. Commits some tough fouls and is a bit dirty, but nothing too out of line.

Was solid for us last year all things considered, hope him and Nicholson do well for you guys.

Ehhh, as a 3rd center he probably isn't the worst (definitely not great)... but given our lack of big upside I'd rather they gamble on someone relatively young.

Wow. Pretty impressive dunk-blocking skills. And if Nene hated him, I'm happy to have him.

Considering they were almost brothers-in-law, it's funny to read that Nene hated him. hahahahahha

Jason Smith, 3 yr/$16M deal

Post#28 » by W. Unseld » Wed Jul 6, 2016 1:53 am

Could this be a sign of trying to move Gortat whose contract now seems average at worst or is it just an indication that Nene's expiring is about to be traded?

EDIT: I need a vacation, didn't even realize Nene was a free agent--can't believe we weren't able to get anything for his expiring contract this year but I guess cap space was abundant.

Isn't Nene a FA?

I wonder if Gortat is being shopped around.

He's more mid-range than anything. I don't like the signing because he doesn't defend nor does he adequately stretch the floor, a bit of throw back big, Ernie has a hard on for these types... maybe the third time is the charm or more likely Ernie doesn't learn and commits the same blunder over and over again.

The money could have been better spent elsewhere but I guess I sound like a broken record now.

He isn't soft. He will mix it up. He is very professional. He doesn't have much talent, but he has maximized what talent he does have. His offensive game is restricted to 15-foot jumpers; so much so that it became very irritating to watch. Skiles loved him and leaned heavily on pick and pops whenever he was on the floor, thus some of us referred to him as cowbell. If it weren't for this, he would've been a much more popular player among the fans.

For those who unaware of Jason Smith the guys automatic from midrange... He carried Orlando's offense many many times. I guarantee you he will always BRING IT when he's on the court.

If you have a sec go check out his block on Middleton from last season(I would post it but idk how to embed )

Its amazing.

Thanks for the insight. Nicholson's the younger player and, presumably, would have more upside. They both averaged ~15 pg for the Magic last year. Which of the two was the more effective player, based on your eye test?

Between the two Smith was the consistent vet that Skiles relied on more. Nicholson for Orlando was a weird situation because he could never consistently stay in our rotation.(Pretty much since the day we drafted him).

With that being said I can assure you Nicholson showed promise in stretches last season. He was almost unstoppable at times on offense. You will appreciate both of them coming off your bench.

This. I know many of you are skeptical about these signings, but I expect most of you will be happy with both of them once you get an extended look.

Why shop Gortat...his contract is good in today's NBA and he is serviceable at worse. We have our center, point and fragile 2 guard. The rest of the roster is a question. KO and OP are on the clock...but we can't give up on either of them at this point...we need them to develop. Welcome Jason Smith to the team and let's hope he is better than his stats indicate.

I don't hate the move, but we had a decent center in summer league this year and now with white up for that last frontcourt spot, the rest of our bigs in summer league are irrelevant. We signed him to give Eddie a solid cheerleading partner on the bench. He is nothing but veteran insurance. Gortat is not getting moved. 4 spots open, like a mil or two cap room left, we can use the room exception before we sign beal, then we should have our mid level once we sign beal because we will then be over the cap. McCellen and White should make the team, Eddie might be on the team two, we need another PG or an upgrade over Eddie.

Reminds me of EG getting Blair after he got Humphries. Guarantees one will be very unhappy with the lack of playing time. Why get Smith after adding Nicholson???

Looks like he's a give-it-his-all player.

Maybe he's going to make me a fan.

I can't get past my dislike of EG to say much of anything. We'll see.

Jason Smith, 3 yr/$16M deal

Post#36 » by closg00 » Wed Jul 6, 2016 12:06 pm

Does this mean that Ernie will skip watching our SL team? What about Aaron White, Daniel Ochefu & Kaleb Tarczewski? What about Shawn Dawson, will he get a real shot becoming a back-up SG?

Oh-well, this is how Ernie gathers bodies without really taking the time to see if somebody new out-there might be worth keeping around.

Edit: A 3-Year deal? Why lock JS up?

In 9 years in the league, Jason Smith has never had anything resembling a good season. He doesn't rebound, fouls a lot, doesn't shoot the 3 at all, has a low % on 2 point shots for a big (translates to their being predominantly mid-range jump shots). He is quite a FT shooter, but he rarely gets to the line.

This is a 30 year old guy, drafted in 2007. The Wizards are his 6th team. Among guys who played 500+ minutes last year, he is one of the 20 worst players in the league. This is as brain dead a move as I've ever seen, even from Ernie. This was a roster spot for developing a young player.

This guy makes Humphries look like Blake Griffin.
