People who are aligning themselves with Riley instead of Wade are ignoring the fact that, without Wade, Riley has a respectable career as a G.M. and nothing more. The Zo/ Timmy/ Mash teams won games, but it wasn't until the Heat made their only draft selection who had generational talent that the titles began. And it wasn't just his ability to lead but to lure.
Without Wade, there are no 2004 playoffs, no Shaq, no 2005 run, no 2006 title, no LBJ / Bosh, no 2012 or 2013 titles and probably no more Riley by this point, as he would have moved to to another job or retired. It should also be pointed out that if the Heat followed Riley's inclination, they would have drafted Chris Kaman in 2003. And the Heat absolutely WAS willing to swap draft picks with the Bulls for the #7 spot if Chicago had been willing to give up Donyell Marshall, which Bulls fans are still kicking themselves over.
I understand if there's no money to give him $25 M per, but from what I understand he'll take $60 M / 3 years, so what's the issue? Cap flexibility? Don't put that on Wade when the team has over $70 M each tied up in Bosh and Dragic over the next three years and Whiteside just signed a max. (And how much do you think Miami wishes it had agreed to give Wade the $45 M / 3 years he was seeking last year?)
And speaking of Whiteside, to the extent that his offensive productivity contributed to his deal, he owes significant thanks to Wade for that. So why the hell isn't he stepping up and saying he'll take $2 M less per year? If he does that, then Miami can do two years / $50 M.
